To add music to an existing screen recording, open the video in an editor, import a music track, place it on the timeline, then position, trim, and adjust it while previewing the mix. The exact steps depend on your device and editor. If you have not recorded yet, your device’s recording-audio setting is a separate choice from adding music afterward.
Choose a workflow for your device
- iPhone or iPad: iMovie can add tracks from the Music app or audio files stored in Files.
- Mac: iMovie can use music-browser tracks or audio files from Finder.
- Windows or desktop browser: Clipchamp can import a local audio file or use stock music in its Content library.
- Phone with Premiere mobile: Import an audio file from phone storage and edit it on the timeline.
Before choosing a track, check that it is accessible to the editor and that its format is supported. Also check that its license permits your intended use and publication platform.
Add music in iMovie on iPhone or iPad
- Open your project in iMovie and move to the timeline.
- Tap Add Media, then Audio, then My Music to browse tracks downloaded to the Music app or synced to the device.
- Preview a track and add it. iMovie places the song at the start and fits it to the project length.
- To use an audio file instead, tap Add Media, then Files, browse to the file, and select it. Apple gives M4A, MP4, MP3, WAV, and AIFF as example formats.
- If the file is shorter than one minute, put the playhead where you want the audio to begin before adding it.
- Play the project and adjust the track’s position and length to suit the video.
If a track is missing from the picker, confirm it is downloaded locally. Protected music-library files may not appear in iMovie. See Apple’s iMovie audio instructions.
Add music in iMovie on Mac
- Open the project and select Audio, then Music in the media browser.
- Drag the chosen track into the timeline.
- For background music, place it in the music well. To associate a song or sound effect with a particular video clip, place it under that clip.
- Alternatively, drag an audio file from Finder into the timeline.
- Play the edit and adjust the track’s placement and length.
Apple documents these options in its iMovie audio guide.

Add music with Clipchamp
- Open the video project in Clipchamp.
- Import your audio by dragging it into My media or choosing Import media. You can also choose stock music from the Content library.
- Drag the audio onto the timeline, then move, split, or trim it to fit the recording.
- Preview the result and adjust the mix so important original audio or narration remains clear.
Clipchamp’s cloud import options differ between personal and work accounts, so an import source available to one account type may not be available to another. If a file will not import, check its format against Clipchamp’s supported audio formats. See Microsoft’s Clipchamp instructions.
Add music in Premiere mobile
- In Premiere mobile, choose Files and Audio. In the alternate flow, choose Music and audio, then Files.
- Browse phone storage and select the audio file to import it.
- On the timeline, trim the track, adjust its volume, or combine it with other sounds.
- Preview the full recording to check timing and balance.
Menu names can depend on the flow shown in the app. Adobe’s guide was last updated September 22, 2026: Import audio from your phone to Premiere on mobile.

Recording audio is different from adding music afterward
Android’s screen recorder offers a choice about whether to record audio before capture begins. That setting concerns audio captured during recording; it does not add a separate music track to a video you have already made. Use an editor’s timeline for post-recording music. Android’s guidance does not establish that every device or app can capture all internal app audio, so check the options on your specific device. See Android’s screen recording help.
Check music rights before publishing
A song appearing in a personal library does not automatically mean you can use it in a published video. Apple notes that protected music-library files may be unavailable in iMovie; using an iTunes Store purchase in a project requires you to be the copyright holder or have express permission from the copyright holder. YouTube warns that copyrighted content used in Shorts created outside YouTube’s creation tools may receive a Content ID claim or be removed after a copyright removal request. Check the track’s license and the rules of the platform where you plan to post; do not assume access to a song grants publication rights. See Apple’s guidance and YouTube’s Shorts audio guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The track is missing: Check that it is stored locally, and consider whether it is a protected file unavailable to the editor.
- The file will not import: Verify that the editor supports its format. Apple lists M4A, MP4, MP3, WAV, and AIFF as examples for iMovie; Microsoft advises checking supported formats for Clipchamp.
- The music starts at the wrong time: Move the audio clip to the desired position on the timeline. For an iMovie file shorter than one minute, position the playhead before adding it.
- The track is too long or too short: Trim it to the video and preview the ending so the music does not cut off awkwardly.
- Narration or game audio is hard to hear: Adjust the music volume by ear while previewing the mix. The cited editor guidance does not establish a universal numeric volume target.
- You expected recording-time audio to add a soundtrack: Recording settings and post-production editing are separate; import music into an editor after capture.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live with uploaded videos rather than edit a soundtrack into a screen recording, StreamNeo is a separate option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
