Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Steam used to let you scan folders of personal MP3s through Steam > Settings > Music. That folder-import workflow is now a legacy feature: Valve’s current documentation focuses on Steam-purchased soundtracks, while a Klei support update from March 2026 reports that importing externally purchased soundtrack files was discontinued. Your client may still show the old controls, but do not assume they are available.
First, identify which kind of music you have
| Music source | What to do |
|---|---|
| Soundtrack purchased on Steam | Install it as a Steam soundtrack app, then open it from the Library’s Soundtracks filter. |
| Older soundtrack DLC bundled with a game | Install the associated game first if the soundtrack does not appear separately. |
| MP3s or other files stored on your computer | Try the legacy folder-import steps only if your Steam client still displays an Add or Set Up Music Library control. |
| Soundtrack purchased from Humble or another store | Download the files from that store and use a normal desktop music player. Current Steam support for importing them is not established. |
How to install and play a Steam-purchased soundtrack
- Open the soundtrack’s Store page and select Play Now to begin installation, or locate it in your Library.
- In the Library, open the media-type drop-down near the top-left and enable Soundtracks.
- Select the soundtrack and choose Download Album.
- Play the installed album from its soundtrack entry. Steam delivers newer soundtrack products as music apps.
Some older soundtrack DLC does not appear until its associated base game is installed. In exceptional releases, the audio is included inside the game’s installation directory rather than delivered as a separate music app. Valve documents this workflow at Soundtracks in Steam.
How to add local music if your client still supports it
These are the historical desktop instructions. Menu wording differed between Steam desktop, Big Picture, and SteamOS, and current clients may omit the folder controls entirely.
- Open the desktop Steam client.
- Select Steam in the top-left menu, then choose Settings.
- Open Music.
- Select Add or Set Up Music Library.
- Choose a folder containing your audio files; add additional folders if needed.
- Wait for Steam to scan the selected locations.
- Open the Steam music area from the Library and select an album or track.
- While a game is running, open the Steam Overlay and use its Music module if that module is present.
The older player supported albums, queues, playlists, and Overlay playback. Valve introduced Steam Music on September 24, 2014; the historical workflow is described in Valve’s Steam Music announcement and a desktop guide.

What to do when the Add folder button is missing
- Make sure you are using the desktop Steam client, not the mobile app.
- Update Steam, restart it, and check Steam > Settings again.
- If Music exists but contains only soundtrack-related settings, your installation may support Steam soundtracks without arbitrary local-file importing.
- If the Music section and music library are absent, do not edit configuration files or rely on undocumented launch options. Old screenshots can show controls that no longer exist.
Valve’s current support page does not clearly document consumer import of arbitrary personal files. Klei’s March 2026 support update says Steam discontinued the ability to add externally purchased soundtrack files, but that statement is from the developer rather than a standalone Valve announcement: Klei support.
How to find soundtrack files installed with a game
For an older or exceptional release that stores music with the game:
- Open your Library and right-click the game.
- Choose Manage > Browse local files.
- Look for the soundtrack files in the game’s installation directory.
Do not assume every soundtrack is stored there. Newer products normally appear as standalone soundtrack apps.

Legacy troubleshooting for a library that will not update
Use these checks only when your client still exposes folder scanning:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Confirm the selected location contains actual audio files, not shortcuts or compressed archives.
- Try adding the specific album folder or its parent folder.
- Close and restart Steam after copying files.
- Remove and re-add the folder, or use a scan/database-reset control if the interface provides one.
- Keep the files in a stable local folder that is connected and readable by your operating-system account.
- Test with one simple MP3 before investigating tags, artwork, or codecs.
- Remember that historical guides primarily refer to MP3 files; do not treat them as a current, universal format guarantee.
These remove-and-re-add suggestions come from older community troubleshooting and are not guaranteed fixes: Steam Music troubleshooting discussion.
Filenames, metadata, and audio quality
Steamworks documentation for soundtrack creators says the Music Player determines playback order from filenames, can use common audio metadata and artwork, and may prefer a lossless version when both lossless and lossy soundtrack files are available. Those details describe soundtrack handling and historical behavior; they do not prove that arbitrary local-file import remains enabled in every current client. See Game Soundtracks on Steam.

Steam Deck and SteamOS
SteamOS historically had its own Music section and folder-selection flow. If you are managing files on a Steam Deck, switch to Desktop Mode to copy files and inspect folders. Do not assume a folder selected there will appear in the current Gaming Mode music interface; the available SteamOS instructions are historical and do not establish present-day behavior: SteamOS guide.
Can Steam use Spotify, Apple Music, or another streaming service?
No Steam Music import workflow turns a streaming-service catalog into a Steam library. If you only need background music while gaming, leave the streaming or desktop music app running and control it with that app’s own controls or your operating system’s media keys.

If your client lacks folder-import controls, treat that as a feature-availability limitation rather than a hidden setting.
