Instead, install compatible Bedrock add-ons—behavior packs, resource packs, or both—in the server’s packs folder. If you specifically need a Java plugin, use a Java server such as Paper and add Geyser so Bedrock players can connect.
First, identify what you downloaded
“Plugin” can mean several different things. Check the creator’s stated platform and Minecraft version before uploading anything; a file extension alone does not establish compatibility.

If a download is a .jar, it is probably intended for Java or a particular plugin ecosystem, not a normal Bedrock server. A Bedrock pack often includes manifest.json, but check its documentation and required dependencies too.
Install a Bedrock add-on on Aternos
Aternos’ Java plugin installation guide is for Java Edition. For Bedrock, use its add-on installation guide, which directs users to upload packs to packs.

- Back up your world. This is a precaution before changing packs, experiments, or server software; it is not a stated Aternos requirement.
- Check the add-on’s requirements. Confirm it is for Bedrock, supports the Minecraft version your server runs, and identify whether it needs a behavior pack, resource pack, both, experimental gameplay, or a particular world setup.
- Stop the server.
- Open the server’s Files section, then open
packs. - Upload the pack or packs there. Upload both behavior and resource packs if the creator says both are required. Follow the creator’s packaging instructions for ZIP files; do not add extra nested folders or assume every archive should be extracted or left compressed.
- Enable experimental gameplay if the add-on requires it. Use Aternos’ Bedrock support guides for the relevant settings.
- Start the server and test with a compatible Bedrock client. Depending on the pack, players may need to accept a resource-pack download, use a configured world, run commands documented by the add-on, or reconnect after the restart.
Uploading a pack does not guarantee that it will work. Aternos warns that servers do not automatically repair outdated add-ons the way single-player worlds may, so the pack must be compatible with the server’s Minecraft version.
If the add-on does not work
Check these issues in order:
- Version mismatch: Confirm the pack supports the server’s Minecraft version. A pack that loads in single-player may still be outdated for the server.
- Missing pack type or dependency: The download may include separate behavior and resource packs, or require another pack. Check the creator’s instructions and upload all required parts.
- Experiments not enabled: Some add-ons depend on experimental gameplay settings.
- Incorrect folder structure: Check that the files are in the location Aternos scans, rather than buried inside an unintended extra directory. Look for packaging instructions and pack files such as
manifest.json. - World or client requirements: The add-on may require a particular world configuration, a resource-pack download acceptance, a reconnect, or commands documented by its creator.
- Pack or manifest errors: Inspect the server console and content logs for loading errors. Aternos’ add-on guide describes content-log output settings in
server.propertiesfor Minecraft 1.20 and newer; for Minecraft 1.19 and older, enabling content logging can create aContentLog__*.txtfile. Follow the guide for the version you run.
If you uploaded a .jar and Aternos rejected it, identify the software and edition it was made for. A Java plugin file is not a Bedrock add-on.

What about PocketMine plugins?
PocketMine-MP is alternative server software, not the standard Bedrock Dedicated Server. A PocketMine plugin must be made for PocketMine; it is not automatically compatible with Java servers, official Bedrock servers, or Bedrock add-ons.
Aternos’ Bedrock add-on guide says PocketMine does not fully support Bedrock add-ons. It documents uploading resource packs to resource_packs and listing them in resource_packs.yml, which is normally generated when the server starts for the first time. The guide does not establish a general procedure for installing arbitrary PocketMine plugins through Aternos’ free panel, so don’t assume a generic /plugins upload will work.

Use Java plugins while allowing Bedrock players
If you need a conventional Java plugin—such as a compatible permissions or moderation plugin—the Aternos alternative is a Java server that accepts Bedrock clients through Geyser. This is a Java server with a crossplay bridge, not a Bedrock server running Java plugins.
- Run a Java Edition server. Choose plugin-capable software such as Paper, Purpur, or Spigot; Aternos recommends Paper in its Java plugin guide.
- Install the desired Java plugin from Aternos’ supported plugin library, making sure it supports your server software and version.
- Install Geyser using Aternos’ guide to allowing Bedrock players on a Java server. Aternos says Floodgate is installed automatically with Geyser through its panel.
- Give Bedrock players the Aternos address and port shown for the server, and have them connect using those details.
- Keep Geyser current as Bedrock versions change. Follow the Aternos guide if connection compatibility needs troubleshooting; it notes that ViaVersion or ViaBackwards may be needed in some cases.
Java and Bedrock do not become identical through Geyser: some features and mechanics may differ, and Java plugins must still be compatible with the server. Aternos also says Geyser and a voice-chat mod cannot be used together on the same server because both require UDP ports and Aternos provides one port per server.

If the Java plugin is missing from Aternos
Aternos does not allow unrestricted custom plugin or mod uploads or FTP access on its free service; it cites security, operational, and free-hosting sustainability reasons in its file-upload guidance. Supported plugins are installed through the panel. If a plugin is missing, you can suggest it to Aternos. Its criteria generally include a supported source, direct download, free availability, reasonable popularity, active development, and a detailed English description. Aternos says review can take days or weeks.
If you need a private, paid, custom, or unsupported plugin and cannot use the suggestion route, free Aternos does not provide the unrestricted upload access that requires. Consider self-hosting or a host that supports custom files; self-hosting gives more control but also leaves server setup, security, backups, networking, and uptime to you.
