How to Add PS3 Games and Firmware to RPCS3—and Why You Can’t Do It on PS4

RPCS3 is not supported on PS4. Use it on a supported host, install official PS3 firmware in the emulator, add a legally owned PS3 game dump, and check that title’s compatibility.

You can’t install or run RPCS3 on a PS4: RPCS3 is a PlayStation 3 emulator, and the project’s current guides list Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD and Android—not PS4—as supported host platforms. To use RPCS3, run it on a supported computer or device, install official PS3 system software in the emulator, then add a legally owned PS3 game dump. The PS4 itself, its system software and PS4 game discs are not substitutes for those inputs.

Can RPCS3 run on PS4?

No. RPCS3 emulates PlayStation 3 software; its documentation does not list PS4 as a host platform. Its current project guides list Windows, Linux, macOS, FreeBSD and Android. An older project FAQ also describes Windows and Linux, but the current platform list is the more relevant reference.

This means there is no PS4 menu path for installing RPCS3, and the steps below apply only when you are using RPCS3 on a supported host. A PS4 game disc is a PS4 Blu-ray game, not a PS3 game dump for RPCS3; likewise, PS4 system software is not the PS3 firmware the emulator needs. Sony describes PS4 physical games as Blu-ray discs for PS4 (Sony’s PS4 disc guidance).

What you need to add PS3 games to RPCS3

  • A supported host: A device running one of the platforms on RPCS3’s current guides page.
  • Official PS3 system software: The PS3 update file, installed in RPCS3 as firmware.
  • A legally owned PS3 game dump: Game data is separate from firmware. RPCS3’s guide says to add games using File → Add Games.

For instructions on preparing a game dump, its required files or format-specific details, use the live RPCS3 Quickstart Guide. Those details are not covered here, and a PS4 disc is not an alternative source of PS3 game data.

How to install PS3 firmware in RPCS3

  1. Get the official PS3 update file from Sony. Sony’s PS3 support page identifies system software version 4.93 as current as of October 7, 2026, and provides the official update file at PlayStation’s PS3 system software page.
  2. Install the file from within RPCS3. Follow the firmware installation instructions in the current RPCS3 Quickstart Guide. The project’s guides describe installing official PS3 firmware in the emulator.

Sony’s USB directions are for updating a physical PS3: format a USB drive as FAT32, create PS3/UPDATE, and save the update file as PS3UPDAT.PUP. On the console, select Settings > System Update > Update via Storage Media. Those instructions do not establish that a USB drive is required to install firmware in RPCS3; follow the emulator’s own guide for that process. Sony warns: “Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site.” (Sony PS3 system software instructions.)

Add a PS3 game and check its compatibility

  1. Start RPCS3 on a supported host after installing the firmware.
  2. Select File → Add Games and choose the location containing your legally owned PS3 game dump, following the current Quickstart Guide for game preparation and file requirements.
  3. Look up the specific game in RPCS3’s compatibility list. Compatibility varies by title and can also depend on the game data and configuration; a database status is not a guarantee that your setup will work.

In September 2026, the compatibility table recorded 2,809 entries as Playable, 721 as Ingame, 31 as Intro and 2 as Loadable. These are dated status counts from RPCS3’s database, not a guarantee for an individual copy, configuration or future version of the emulator (RPCS3 compatibility list).

Quick checks if your setup is not working

  • You are trying to launch RPCS3 on PS4: That is not a supported host in the project’s current platform list. Use a supported computer or Android device instead.
  • You selected PS4 firmware or a PS4 disc: RPCS3’s documented inputs are official PS3 firmware and PS3 game dumps, not PS4 system software or PS4 games.
  • The game does not appear after adding it: Recheck the game preparation and file requirements in the current Quickstart Guide, then use File → Add Games to select the appropriate location.
  • The game appears but will not run as expected: Check its individual status in the compatibility list. The list’s categories describe reported compatibility, not a promise about your particular setup.
