To change what viewers see on a YouTube live stream at set times without ending the stream, keep one encoder feed running and schedule the video or scene changes in the encoder or a separate playout system. YouTube’s scheduled-event settings control when a broadcast starts or ends; they do not, by themselves, schedule clips within a continuous broadcast.
Choose how the video will change
There are three practical approaches, depending on whether you want to manage the video locally, use cloud playout, or make a scheduled segment appear as its own live video.
Local encoder and playout
Run OBS or another encoder continuously, and arrange source or scene changes in the encoder workflow or another playout layer. The encoder must keep sending a feed while the content changes. This gives you control over scenes, overlays, and local media, but your computer, network, source files, and encoder must remain operational. The reviewed OBS guide covers YouTube broadcast setup and event auto-start/auto-stop options; it does not establish a particular computer specification or a built-in OBS scheduler for timed media-source changes. OBS Project guide to streaming to YouTube.
Cloud playout
YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. The directory listing does not establish its current prices, commercial terms, or which scheduling functions are available on each plan, so confirm those details with the provider before choosing it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Separate scheduled segment broadcast
If you want a scheduled segment to have its own live video and watch page while the continuous feed stays live, YouTube documents an API pattern that binds two broadcast resources to the same stream. In its example, a 24/7 broadcast remains live while a separate interview broadcast starts and later completes; the encoder continues sending video throughout. This is different from switching clips inside a single watch page. YouTube Live Streaming API: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
Set up a continuous broadcast with scheduled content changes
- Enable live streaming on the channel in advance. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Do not leave channel activation until just before your planned start. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Choose the content automation layer. Use encoder-run scenes or media for a locally operated production, a cloud playout tool for cloud-based prerecorded playback, or YouTube’s Live Streaming API if separate scheduled broadcasts and watch pages are required. These approaches solve different problems: the first two change the continuous feed’s content, while the API pattern is for separate broadcast resources.
- Create or select the YouTube broadcast. Set its title, visibility, and other metadata. If you schedule an event, check the selected auto-start and auto-stop behavior. The OBS guide says auto-stop ends the broadcast after streaming stops and prevents reconnecting to continue that same scheduled broadcast. For a stream that must remain available, understand the consequences before enabling auto-stop. See the OBS Project guide.
- Connect the encoder. Use YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, or an available account integration in your encoder. Keep the same encoder session sending video across the scheduled content changes; starting and stopping separate encoder sessions is not equivalent to changing sources within one persistent broadcast. Keep the stream key private.
- Configure the output for your connection. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 ingest at 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not a guarantee that your upload connection can sustain them. Select a bitrate that the connection can maintain continuously, and consult YouTube’s table for other resolutions, frame rates, and codecs: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Use appropriate transport and keyframes. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it; YouTube describes it as a secure extension to RTMP and recommends it. For its general RTMP/RTMPS guidance, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds. Its guidance lists AAC or MP3 as audio options. Confirm the labels and available settings in your encoder, since its interface may vary by version. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Test the whole schedule before leaving it unattended. Run representative transitions with real audio and motion, check that audio continues or changes as intended, and monitor YouTube stream health. Test reconnect behavior too: the reviewed guidance does not establish a guaranteed recovery design for a particular local setup. YouTube advises testing with representative audio and motion and monitoring stream health in its encoder settings guidance.
Keep YouTube event scheduling separate from content scheduling
A YouTube scheduled broadcast is an event with a start and end behavior. A content schedule is the plan that changes the video or scene being sent. A scheduled event can help viewers see an upcoming broadcast, but the clip changes still need to be arranged in the encoder or a playout layer. Plan these separately: first decide when the broadcast exists, then decide what the encoder sends at each time.

If the broadcast is intended to stay continuous, avoid assuming that stopping the encoder to change a video is harmless. The OBS guide specifically warns that auto-stop ends the broadcast after streaming stops and prevents reconnecting to continue that same scheduled broadcast. Test your intended transition and reconnect behavior on the actual configuration before relying on it.
Copyright and channel-policy checks for prerecorded video
Before scheduling any recorded material, make sure you have the rights needed to stream the video and its audio on YouTube. A continuous loop does not make copyrighted material permissible. Also consider whether the channel’s programming offers enough original value to comply with YouTube’s monetization policies; permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for your specific content rather than treating an uninterrupted stream as an exception.

Common problems and what to check
- The live event starts or ends at the wrong time: Review the broadcast’s schedule and auto-start/auto-stop settings. Those settings govern the event, not the content playlist.
- The broadcast ends when the encoder stops: Check whether auto-stop is enabled. The OBS guide says it ends the broadcast after streaming stops and prevents reconnecting to continue that same scheduled broadcast.
- The picture buffers or stream health degrades: Compare your configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected resolution and frame rate, then verify that your sustained upload connection can support the setting. YouTube’s recommendations are ingest targets, not a connection test.
- A timed change does not happen: Check the schedule in the encoder or playout layer, not only the YouTube event settings. Test each transition while monitoring the outgoing feed.
- A separate segment needs its own watch page: Switching the source in a continuous feed keeps the content in that broadcast. Use the API-managed separate-broadcast pattern when the segment must be its own live video, and test the binding behavior before production.
- The source changes but audio or motion is wrong: Test the transition using the same kinds of audio and motion as the real program, then monitor stream health. A static or silent preview will not reveal every issue in a live schedule.
