Build each promo as a separate scene in OBS Studio, choose a scene transition and duration, then switch scenes while OBS stays connected to YouTube Live. With Studio Mode, you can preview the next promo before taking it live. YouTube receives the composed OBS output; you do not need to stop and restart the broadcast for each video.
Prepare the promo scenes in OBS
- Create a scene for each promo. In OBS, add a scene for each segment you want to play. Add the corresponding video file as a source in that scene.
- Check each scene before the event. Select it and confirm the intended video and audio appear in the preview. Check that price text, terms, disclaimers, logos, and calls to action are readable and not covered by other sources.
- Choose the transition. OBS provides Fade and Cut from first launch. Its overview also lists Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, and Luma Wipe. Choose a transition in the Scene Transitions controls and set its duration. OBS documents the available controls, but does not prescribe a duration for retail promos. OBS Studio Overview Guide
Choose a transition that suits the edit
| Situation | Starting choice | Check before going live |
|---|---|---|
| The clips have a clean visual handoff or the offer changes rapidly | Cut | Check for an unintended black frame and mismatched audio. |
| You want a softer change between promos | Fade | Preview the duration and ensure offer text stays legible as the images overlap. |
| A branded wipe fits the creative | Swipe, Slide, Fade to color, or Luma Wipe | Make sure the effect does not obscure prices, terms, or product details. |
These are practical starting points, not universally tested settings. The right duration and effect depend on the footage and on-screen copy.
Preview and switch during the broadcast
- Use Studio Mode if you need a preview-before-live workflow. It separates the current live scene from the scene you are preparing, so you can inspect the next promo before switching it to the output.
- Switch scenes without interrupting the encoder feed. Select the next scene and use the selected transition. Keep OBS sending the program to YouTube throughout; changing scenes changes the composed output rather than restarting the YouTube broadcast.
- Make repeated changes predictable. OBS supports Quick Transitions and hotkeys. Configure them if useful, then rehearse the promo order and any operator handoff.
- Monitor picture and sound. Confirm that clip audio does not overlap unexpectedly and that the outgoing program shows the intended promo. Rehearse the complete sequence before the retail event.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, configure the encoder stream and copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS.
- Start streaming from OBS so YouTube receives the encoder feed.
- Wait for the preview in Live Control Room and check that picture and sound are correct.
- Select Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for encoder streaming. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the Live Control Room flow: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Choose live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
Do not confuse promo switching with Take a Break
YouTube’s Take a Break control is for an away slate and, for eligible streams, an ad break. It is separate from switching among promo scenes in OBS and is not a promo-video playlist. YouTube says the break does not automatically end when its countdown reaches zero; an operator must end it in Live Control Room. Custom video used as a break overlay has eligibility conditions: it must be public or unlisted and allow embedding, and it cannot be a Premiere, members-only, monetized, or copyright-claimed video. See YouTube’s live monetization guidance.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Equipment and practical checks
This workflow is software-led: the cited documentation does not establish a camera, capture card, or hardware video switcher as necessary for switching prerecorded promo files in an encoder. A programmable control pad is optional; OBS supports hotkeys and Quick Transitions, so a Stream Deck is not required to trigger scene changes.
- Check that each scene uses the intended file and that its audio is present.
- Watch transitions for black frames, abrupt audio changes, or overlapping sound.
- Check small-screen readability of offer copy, terms, and disclaimers during and after transitions.
- Rehearse the full scene order and operator handoff before the event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video without a computer or home connection staying on. It does not switch live camera feeds; for a retail event where you need to choose and preview scenes in real time, use the OBS workflow above.
