If you need clips to play in order, use a VLC Video playlist—but treat playlist playback and scene transitions as separate controls. OBS documentation does not establish that a playlist automatically crossfades between its items.
Set up a fade between video scenes
- Create a scene for each clip or segment you want to switch to. In OBS, scenes and sources make up the stream layout. Give scenes clear names so you can identify the next meditation video while operating the stream.
- Add each video as a Media Source. In the scene’s Sources dock, choose + and select Media Source, then browse to the clip. OBS documentation lists support for .mp4, .ts, .mov, .flv, .mkv, .avi, .gif, and .webm files. Available options can vary with the OBS version and operating system.
- Choose the scene transition. In the Scene Transitions dock, select Fade and adjust its duration. Fade and Cut are available from a fresh OBS installation; the OBS overview explains that users can select a transition and change its duration. There is no official meditation-specific duration, so choose what feels calm with your footage and audio.
- Preview the next scene before switching. If you use Studio Mode, add Fade as a Quick Transition. Quick Transitions can have their own durations, letting you preview the next scene and deliberately trigger the switch.
- Test the full change before going live. Check that the outgoing and incoming clips look right during the fade, and that their audio behaves as intended in your setup. Verify the result in your installed OBS version; interface labels and behavior may differ between releases.
OBS’s scene transition applies when you change scenes. It does not, by itself, establish a crossfade between items playing inside a single source.
Set clip playback behavior
Media Source properties let you decide what a clip does during playback. Set them to match whether the video is meant to repeat, restart when its scene becomes active, or disappear when it ends.
- Loop: enable it if the clip should repeat.
- Restart playback when source becomes active: use it if returning to that scene should start its clip from the beginning.
- Show nothing when playback ends: use it if the clip should disappear at the end rather than leave its final frame visible.
These playback choices are separate from the Fade transition between scenes. Check them during your preview so an ended clip or an unexpected restart does not interrupt the meditation stream.

Use a playlist when clips need to play in sequence
For ordered playback from one source, use OBS’s VLC Video source and install VLC first. OBS describes VLC Video as supporting a playlist of items, unlike the ordinary Media Source. This solves sequencing; it is not a documented substitute for setting a scene transition. The OBS documentation does not say that changing playlist items invokes a scene fade or crossfade.
If you need a soft change between playlist items specifically, do not assume that selecting Fade in the Scene Transitions dock will create one. The documented control is for scene changes. Check the behavior in your own setup and use separate scenes if you need to control each change as a scene transition.

Choose between a fade, a playlist, and a stinger

A simple Fade is the sensible starting point for a calm scene change; a custom stinger is only necessary if you want a designed animation. For a track matte stinger, preparing the overlay and matte together avoids relying on separate files to stay synchronized.
