For a fixed sequence, that may be chapters or a maintained playlist; for dynamic playback, the overlay needs compatible current-track metadata. YouTube’s live-event title and description are not documented as automatic, per-song labels.
Choose how the overlay will get song names
A now-playing overlay is a graphic placed over the video output. An OBS forum resource describes a browser-based “Music on stream” overlay with support for YouTube and YouTube Music, and identifies YouTube chapters or a playlist in the video description as possible title inputs. Treat those as possible workflows, not guaranteed plug-and-play integrations: compatibility and synchronization can depend on the player, playlist format, encoder, and continuous-stream setup. See the OBS forum resource.
| Track-name source | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Chapters or a prepared playlist | A known, fixed order of tracks. | Make sure names and sequence match the actual audio, and keep the timing or list current if the order changes. |
| Player-driven metadata | A player that exposes the currently playing track to an integration the overlay supports. | Confirm the specific player and integration work together; universal support is not established by the cited resource. |
| YouTube live-event title and description | The name and details of the overall broadcast. | These are event-level fields, not a documented mechanism for updating an on-screen song label. |
There is no documented universal YouTube setting that recognizes each track and displays its title automatically. The title source needs to reflect how your stream actually selects and plays music.
Set up and verify a now-playing overlay
- Map the playback sequence. Decide whether your stream follows a fixed list or changes tracks dynamically. For a fixed sequence, prepare accurate titles and, if using them, matching chapters or a description playlist. For dynamic playback, identify how the player exposes the current track and whether the overlay can read it.
- Add the overlay to the stream output. In your streaming software, add the chosen overlay as a browser-source-style graphic and position it where it will not obscure important artwork or text. Follow the overlay provider’s own setup instructions; the cited resource does not establish one universal installation procedure for every setup.
- Check readability and transitions. Preview the text at the resolution viewers will see. Confirm that long song names fit, spelling and artist names are correct, and the displayed title changes at the right point in the audio.
- Run a private or unlisted test before relying on it. Test the actual playlist or player, not just a sample page. Check several track changes, including a transition after the stream has been running for a while. Correct timing, metadata, or integration problems before making the broadcast public.
- Recheck after changing the music sequence. A prepared list only stays accurate if it is updated when tracks are reordered, skipped, or replaced. If the player changes tracks without updating metadata the overlay can access, the label may be stale or wrong.
Keep song labels separate from broadcast metadata
YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents title and description fields for a live stream, while its LiveBroadcasts reference covers broadcast-level details including title, description, start and end times, and privacy settings. Those fields identify the live event; the API references do not describe a visible label that changes for each song. Use a separate on-screen overlay for changing track names. See YouTube’s LiveStreams reference and LiveBroadcasts reference.

Song names do not clear music rights
Displaying a song’s title or artist does not grant permission to broadcast the recording. YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content. Its guidance says an identified match can replace the stream with a placeholder image, and continued use can interrupt or terminate the stream. If you have licensed third-party content, YouTube says the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid interruption. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and confirm that your permissions cover the use you intend.
YouTube’s Live Content ID matching is not a general-purpose song-identification overlay. YouTube limits the feature to certain Content Manager partners, with requirements including global rights and exclusive ownership of the content in the stream. Listing songs, adding an overlay, or having a stream URL does not resolve licensing. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Troubleshoot incorrect or missing song names
- The label never appears: Check that the overlay source is enabled, its address or configuration is correct, and it is visible above the video layer in the output. Then test the overlay provider’s setup with your actual player.
- The same title stays on screen: The playlist or chapter source may not reflect the current track, or the player may not expose changing metadata to the overlay. Verify that the source advances and that the overlay supports that specific method.
- The title changes too early or late: Compare the label transition with the actual audio in a test broadcast. Correct chapter timing or the prepared list; for dynamic playback, investigate the player-to-overlay metadata path.
- Titles are misspelled, incomplete, or hard to read: Correct the underlying title data and preview long names at the intended output size. Do not assume the overlay can infer missing artist or track information.
- The stream is interrupted despite labels or a license: Song labels do not affect copyright enforcement. Check YouTube’s notice and work with the relevant rights holder; a license may not prevent interruption if the channel has not been allowlisted where needed.
