On YouTube, add chapters to an archived live stream by editing the video’s description in YouTube Studio. Put one timestamp and title on each line, beginning with 00:00; include at least three timestamps in ascending order, with at least 10 seconds between chapters. Save the description, then check the archive’s playback to confirm the divisions appear.
First, confirm the live stream was archived
In YouTube Studio, check Content > Live for the stream. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. If there is no archive, there is no archived video to chapter; check your local recording or other saved copy instead. YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance explains the limitation.
Add chapters to a YouTube archive
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Content, then select the archived stream. You can also find live uploads from Content > Live.
- Edit the video description and add a timestamp followed by a short chapter title on each line. Start with
00:00, list at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. - Save the description. Open the public video or preview playback and check that the chapter labels and boundaries appear at the intended moments.
For example, the format can look like this; use times that match your actual archive:

Chapter availability can depend on feature access and video eligibility: YouTube says a channel without access can apply for advanced features, and automatic chapters are optional and not available on every video. Active strikes or content considered inappropriate for some viewers can also affect feature availability.

Choose useful timestamps
Review the archived playback and note when each meaningful section begins. If you inserted stream markers while live, YouTube may show them on the timeline when you create a highlight. Markers can help locate moments, but they are not the description-based chapter list: transfer the relevant times into the description and verify them in playback. Twitch: category changes become VOD chapters
Enable Past Broadcasts in your stream settings if you want broadcasts saved as VODs. Twitch records category changes as chapter points; its guidance does not describe a way to manually add a custom chapter list after the broadcast. If you need to preserve a VOD, download or export it before it expires. Twitch lists retention windows of 60 days for Partners, Prime, and Turbo users, 14 days for Affiliates, and 7 days for other broadcasters. These are platform retention windows, not guarantees that a particular VOD will remain available in every circumstance. See Twitch’s VOD guidance.

If the sections you want were not marked by category changes, the cited Twitch guidance does not offer a post-stream chapter editor. For custom navigable chapter metadata, use an archive on a platform that supports manual timestamps or make a separately edited version.
Vimeo: automatic suggestions have eligibility requirements
For an eligible archived live event on an Enterprise plan, Vimeo can suggest chapters after transcription finishes. The event must be in English and contain at least 300 words for suggestions to appear. Open the video’s Interactive tab, then Chapters; edit suggested titles or timestamps and select Apply. You can also add chapters manually. Check support at the final viewing destination: Vimeo says OTT platforms do not support automatically suggested chapters. Troubleshooting YouTube chapters
- No chapter divisions appear: Confirm the description was saved and that the first timestamp is
00:00. Check that there are at least three timestamps in ascending order and at least 10 seconds between chapter starts. - Automatic chapters appear instead: Add a valid manual timestamp list to the description; manual entries override automatic chapters.
- The timestamps are right, but chapters remain unavailable: Check whether the channel has access to advanced features and whether the video is eligible. YouTube notes that automatic chapters are not available on every video and that channel strikes or content suitability can affect feature availability.
- The stream is missing from the archive list: Check Content > Live and allow for the archive to appear. If the stream exceeded 12 hours, YouTube says it may not have been captured; look for a local backup.
- A stream marker did not create a chapter: Markers can help with highlight editing, but add the timestamp and title in the description for the documented chapter workflow.
