How to Add Videos to an EC2 YouTube Stream Without Restarting

Keep the YouTube-facing encoder connected and add new media through a playout queue that supports live updates. An EC2 file upload alone will not change the broadcast.

Uploading a video to your EC2 instance does not, by itself, add it to a YouTube live stream. To keep the broadcast running, leave the encoder’s connection to YouTube intact and add the file to the playout queue or media source that feeds the encoder. The exact steps depend on the encoder and queue system; there is no universal hot-add command for an unspecified EC2 setup.

What “upload a video” means in a running stream

There are two separate operations: transferring a file to the EC2 instance, and making the active playout system select that file. Only the second changes the content being sent to YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key to send the encoder’s content to the live stream; uploading a file to the server is not an instruction to YouTube to play it. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

The encoder is the YouTube-facing sender. A separate playout process, playlist manager, or media source determines which prerecorded file reaches that sender. For a no-restart change, keep the sender connected and use a playout mechanism that can recognize and schedule new files while it is running.

Workflow: add a file while keeping the live session connected

  1. Create or open the live stream in YouTube Studio. Configure the encoder with the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password. If you reset it, replace the old value in the encoder configuration; YouTube describes resetting a key in the Live Control Room in its live stream settings guidance.
  2. Keep the encoder’s outgoing session running. Do not stop the process that sends content to YouTube if your goal is to preserve the existing live connection. YouTube says, “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.”
  3. Transfer the new video to a location the playout system can access. Copying it onto the EC2 filesystem completes only the file-transfer step. Confirm that the file is in the watched folder, queue, or media library used by your actual playout application.
  4. Add or schedule it using that system’s supported live-queue method. Check that the application recognizes the file and places it in the intended order before depending on it for continuous playback. Queue behavior is specific to the encoder and playout software, so follow that software’s instructions rather than assuming that a filesystem change will update a running playlist.
  5. Check both sides of the stream. Monitor the encoder output and YouTube’s live preview to verify that the new content is being sent. Test the transition in the exact configuration you use; seamless playback is not guaranteed by the general workflow alone.

Can FFmpeg pick up a new file from an edited playlist?

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a list of compatible files sequentially. Its documentation does not establish that an already-running FFmpeg process will reload a concat list after you edit it. Therefore, adding a filename to a list file while FFmpeg is running is not a reliable, universal no-restart method.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If your setup uses the concat demuxer, check that the files have compatible streams, codecs, and time bases, then verify queue-update behavior in your running configuration. If the active process does not recognize the change, use a playout controller or queue designed to accept additions while running. Do not stop the YouTube-facing sender unless you are prepared for an interruption or for the live session to end.

EC2 process or AWS MediaLive?

An EC2-hosted encoder and AWS Elemental MediaLive are different architectures. An EC2 workflow may run a process such as FFmpeg and a separate file queue; the exact operating system, command, startup method, and queue behavior determine how to add media. AWS documents MediaLive as a managed service with RTMP push and other input types, and its solution can encode and originate adaptive-bitrate HLS delivery. That is not simply an EC2 process with a different name. Choose based on whether you need to preserve an existing EC2 workflow, handle local file sequences, or move to a managed media workflow. The available information does not establish a cost or performance comparison for a particular workload.

Common problems and what to check

  • The uploaded file never appears in the broadcast: confirm that it was added to the playout queue or watched media location, not merely copied to the server.
  • The file is visible but will not play in sequence: check format compatibility with the active playout process, including streams, codecs, and time bases when using FFmpeg’s concat demuxer.
  • An edited concat list has no effect: the documentation does not promise hot-reloading of an active list. Use a queue mechanism that supports runtime additions, or arrange a controlled change rather than assuming the running process will reread the file.
  • The YouTube stream disconnects during the change: check whether the encoder process or its outgoing session was stopped. Keep the YouTube-facing sender alive when continuity is required.
  • The encoder no longer authenticates: confirm that its configured stream key matches the current key in YouTube Studio, especially after a key reset.
