To adjust a Hall-effect stick’s dead zone, start in the affected game’s controller settings and change its center dead zone a little at a time. Raise it if the character or camera moves while the stick is untouched; lower it if small intended movements do not register. There is no universal setting or menu: if the game does not offer the control, check the exact controller model’s app, on-device settings, and current instructions.
What a center dead zone changes
A center dead zone is the small area around a stick’s resting position where movement is ignored. Increasing it can suppress unwanted input near center. Decreasing it can make small movements register sooner, but may also make unwanted center input more noticeable.
Hall-effect sensing does not guarantee that every controller behaves the same way, that unwanted input cannot occur, or that setting the dead zone to zero is best. GuliKit, for example, documents a dead-zone-off mode and advises affected users to adjust the center dead zone in the game or enable the controller’s dead-zone mode. Its FAQ describes using the “Settings Key” and “Screenshot Key” together for that mode; the exact control should be checked against the controller’s instructions. GuliKit FAQ
Adjust the setting in a few controlled steps
- Identify the setup. Note the controller model, platform, and game where the issue occurs. Decide whether the problem is unwanted movement while untouched or small intended movements being missed.
- Look in the affected game first. Open its controller or stick settings and find the center dead-zone control, if available. Menu names vary by game.
- Change only the center dead zone, then test. If the stick causes movement at rest, raise the setting slightly. If small movements are sluggish or ignored, lower it slightly. Test in the same game and repeat in small steps until control feels reliable. The sources do not establish a universally correct percentage or numeric recipe.

- Change one layer at a time. Game settings and controller software or firmware can be separate layers. Adjusting both together makes it harder to tell which change affected the result.
- Retest in the target game. If the game does not support the selected controller input style, a configuration change may not work as expected. Steam’s support guidance cited here is specifically for the 2015 Steam Controller, so it should not be treated as a universal current Steam Input menu guide. Dead-zone adjustment is not calibration
These controls solve different problems. A dead-zone setting determines how much movement around center is ignored. Calibration checks or sets the stick’s centering and range. If the stick appears not to center correctly or its range seems wrong, follow the calibration procedure for the exact model; do not assume calibration changes the game’s dead zone or fixes every unwanted-input problem.

Procedures are model-specific. For example, 8BitDo documents calibration for its Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox through Ultimate Software X or a particular button sequence. Its instructions call for pushing the sticks to the edge and rotating them slowly during calibration. Hall-effect identifies a stick-sensing approach; it does not specify one shared dead-zone menu or implementation. Options vary by controller, game, and platform.
