Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Press the + or – button on the bottom edge of the Quest 2 headset to raise or lower its main audio volume. You can also open Quick Settings from the universal menu and move the volume slider.
Adjust volume with the headset buttons
The two volume buttons are on the headset’s bottom edge, toward the right side when you’re wearing it. Look for the + and – marks; they are separate from the power button and are not on either controller. The buttons adjust the headset’s main listening volume. Quest 2 setup guide
- Press + to make audio louder.
- Press – to make audio quieter.
- Tap for small changes; if continuous adjustment works on your software version, hold a button to move the level more quickly.
An on-screen volume indicator may appear as you adjust it. You can use the buttons in the home environment or while playing a game, without needing to exit the app. If a protective cover or accessory makes the buttons hard to reach, use Quick Settings instead.
Adjust volume from Quick Settings
- Press the Oculus button on the right controller to open the universal menu. This button opens the menu; it does not directly change the volume.
- Select the clock or status area, often showing battery or connection information, to open Quick Settings.
- Find the speaker or volume control and move its slider left to lower the volume or right to raise it.
- Close the panel and return to your game or app.
Meta community guidance describes opening Quick Settings from the clock/status area. The exact layout and labels can vary with Quest software updates; the volume control may be visible immediately or inside a broader settings panel. Meta community guidance on Quick Settings

Volume is too low: check the source and output
The headset’s system volume is only one part of what you hear. An app can have its own volume or mute setting, and connected headphones or a PC can add separate controls. Check the relevant layer before assuming the headset is faulty.
- In a game or media app: Check its audio settings and make sure the app is not muted or turned down.
- With built-in speakers: Check that the speaker openings are not blocked by dirt, a cover, or another accessory.
- With wired headphones: Push the plug fully into the 3.5-mm jack. If you use a USB-C audio accessory, check its connection and compatibility with your setup. Remove the headphones to test whether the built-in speakers work.
- With headphones that have their own controls: Check inline controls or other volume controls on the headphones. If only one pair has low or no sound, try another known-working pair.
- After waking from sleep or connecting to a PC: Audio routing may not be behaving as expected. Restart the headset, then test again.
Quest troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the headphone connection and restarting the headset for audio problems. Quest audio troubleshooting guidance

No sound? Follow this diagnostic order
- Raise the headset volume with +, then lower and raise it once more to check that the control responds.
- Check the game or app’s audio settings and test another app or the home environment.
- Remove wired headphones and USB-C audio accessories, then test the built-in speakers.
- Restart the headset and test again.
- If the speakers work but headphones do not, reconnect the headphones fully, check their own controls, or try another pair.
- If audio fails only in one app or PC-connected mode, check that app or computer’s output settings.
- If neither built-in speakers nor headphones produce sound across apps, contact Meta Support.
Do not infer a hardware defect from silence in just one game: an app setting or audio route may be responsible. A case can also obstruct the headset buttons, while blocked speaker openings can make built-in audio seem unusually quiet.
Quest Link: check the computer’s audio controls too
When Quest 2 is connected to a computer, sound can be affected by several separate levels: headset volume, Windows system volume, the selected Windows playback device, Meta Quest Link, SteamVR, and the game itself. Their controls are not interchangeable, and the desktop app’s labels can change, so use the controls in the version you have installed rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

- Test sound in the standalone headset and then in PC-connected mode.
- If standalone sound works but Link sound does not, check Windows output selection and volume, then check the Link, SteamVR, and game audio settings.
- If sound fails in both modes, check the headset and its connected audio devices using the diagnostic steps above.
The headset’s volume buttons adjust its main listening volume; they do not set microphone input level. Output volume (what you hear), microphone level (how others hear you), app audio balance, and PC output volume are distinct controls. Separate options, where available, depend on the app and software version.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a factory reset is not the next step
A factory reset is excessive for an ordinary volume adjustment and should be reserved for broader, persistent software problems after less disruptive troubleshooting and support guidance. It erases data from the headset. Cloud Backup is not a guarantee that every game’s saved data will return: backup must have been enabled, and support depends on the individual app. Do not reset without understanding the data risk and checking backup status.
