To ascend in Path of Exile 2, complete an eligible Ascension Trial and interact with the Ascension device at its end. The first route described by the community-maintained wiki is the Act 2 Trial of the Sekhemas, entered with Balbala’s Barya; a four-chamber Trial of Chaos is also listed as an alternative for the first Ascendancy points. Before entering any repeat trial, check its entry item: it indicates whether the run will award Ascendancy Skill Points.
How to get your first Ascendancy
- Reach the Act 2 trial route. The community-maintained Trial of the Sekhemas guide describes the quest route to the trial.
- Bring Balbala’s Barya. Use it to open the Trial of the Sekhemas.
- Complete the trial. At the conclusion, use the Ascension device to choose your Ascendancy class and receive the qualifying points.
The wiki also lists a four-chamber Trial of Chaos as an alternative for the first two points. These routes and the later progression ladder are community-maintained guidance; check the item and requirements in game, since official patch notes cited here do not document the complete current ladder.
How to tell whether a trial awards points
Do not assume a completed trial always grants another set of Ascendancy Skill Points. Grinding Gear Games says that Inscribed Ultimatums and Djinn Baryas display whether completing the corresponding Trial of Chaos or Trial of the Sekhemas will grant points. Read that indicator before committing to the run. GGG’s 0.1.0d patch notes introduced this display.
Further Ascendancy points and Chaos trial thresholds
The community wiki describes four two-point milestones, for up to eight Ascendancy points total. Later qualifying runs involve more Sekhemas floors or Chaos chambers. Since the full ladder may change and is not set out in the official patch notes cited here, use the entry item’s point-award text to confirm what a specific run offers.

Officially published Trials of Chaos thresholds
GGG’s 0.2.0f patch notes give these character-level thresholds and potential point totals for Trials of Chaos:
| Trial length | Minimum character level stated | Potential Ascendancy points |
|---|---|---|
| Seven chambers | 55 | Up to four |
| Ten chambers | 65 | Up to six |
These are thresholds published in the 0.2.0f notes; later updates may supersede them. They do not establish that one trial is easier than the other for every build.

How to change your Ascendancy later
- Unallocate every point in your current Ascendancy.
- Complete another trial that would grant at least as many Ascendancy points as your character already has.
- At the Ascension device, choose the replacement class. Balbala or the Trialmaster can open the respec window.
GGG’s 0.2.0f patch notes describe this restriction: the repeat trial must grant the number of points you already have. Check the entry item’s indicator before starting.

The useful comparison is the run’s point-award indicator, the number of floors or chambers, any stated level threshold, and the trial format. The sources establish different formats and some Chaos thresholds, but not a universal difficulty ranking; the better choice depends on your character and the particular eligible run available.
