To restart a YouTube live-stream encoder after a crash or Droplet reboot, run it as a supervised Linux service—typically with systemd—and configure the service to start at boot and restart after an unexpected exit. This restores the local sender, but it does not guarantee that YouTube’s broadcast is live: the incoming feed and viewer-facing event have separate statuses.
What auto-restart does—and what it does not
A service manager can relaunch the local encoder or relay when its process exits and start it again after the server boots. That covers process failure and reboot recovery; it cannot by itself fix invalid media, a failed ingest connection, or YouTube broadcast state.
YouTube distinguishes the incoming feed, represented by a liveStream, from the viewer-facing event, represented by a liveBroadcast. A broadcast must be associated with a stream, and event states such as testing and live are distinct from whether an encoder process is running. Set up a supervised service on the Droplet
The example below shows the shape of a systemd unit, not a tested, distribution-independent configuration. Adapt it to the Droplet’s Linux distribution, systemd version, encoder, and file paths; check the unit syntax on that host before enabling it. The command and paths are placeholders, not a working encoder invocation.

1. Prepare the encoder and protected settings
Install and configure your encoder or relay, then identify its executable, working directory, and exact command. Keep the YouTube ingest URL and stream key in a root-readable configuration or environment file, not in a publicly readable unit, shell history, or logs. Do not put a real stream key in a shared example or expose it when troubleshooting.
2. Create a service unit
Create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service. A minimal illustrative pattern is:

WantedBy=multi-user.targetReplace the user, paths, and command with values for your setup. The protected environment file should be readable only by the service account and root as appropriate; restrict its permissions, for example with root ownership and mode 0600 where the service runs with sufficient privileges to read it. Configure the command so secrets are not echoed to standard output or error. The example’s ten-second delay is a starting point, not a universal recommendation: choose a delay that avoids a rapid restart loop while allowing timely recovery. Validate the unit with the target system’s systemd tools.
3. Enable, start, and inspect it
- Reload systemd’s unit definitions after creating or changing the file:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable service startup at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service. - Check the current service state:
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service. - Review recent service logs:
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager. Check that output does not disclose the stream key. - Once the feed is stable, deliberately test recovery during a maintenance window by stopping or terminating the encoder process in a controlled way. Confirm the service manager starts it again, then verify YouTube receives valid video and the intended broadcast is available.
A process that exits repeatedly will be restarted repeatedly according to the policy, but that does not repair the underlying fault. If the encoder enters a stuck state without exiting, an exit-based restart policy may not detect it; an external watchdog or orchestration layer needs a meaningful health check of output or ingest, not merely a running PID. That extra layer also needs a deliberate policy for updating or checking YouTube broadcast state.

Check RTMPS connection and YouTube stream health
For RTMPS ingest, use the endpoint and path supplied for the YouTube stream, port 443, and correct TLS server-name indication (SNI). YouTube documents RTMPS as an encrypted ingest option. A process can be active while the connection or media remains invalid, so confirm the feed is accepted rather than relying on the service status alone. YouTube’s RTMPS delivery guidance.
If the service remains up but YouTube shows no usable stream, inspect the stream status and status.healthStatus.configurationIssues. YouTube’s diagnostics can identify issues involving audio or video codecs, bitrate, audio sample rate, frame rate, keyframe/GOP settings, primary-versus-backup stream mismatches, or insufficient incoming video. Correct the encoder or ingest configuration indicated by the diagnostic; restarting the same faulty command is not a fix. YouTube LiveStream configuration issues.

Which recovery layer fits the failure?

DigitalOcean’s monitoring can provide CPU, RAM, and disk metrics and alert policies; it helps diagnose resource pressure but is not process supervision. Backups are system-level disk images for reverting or recreating a Droplet, not an automatic encoder restart. The Recovery Console provides out-of-band access when network settings or SSH prevent normal access; it is for access recovery, not routine supervision. - Service will not start: Check
systemctl statusand the journal for an incorrect executable path, working directory, permissions, or invalid unit configuration. Correct the reported issue, reload systemd after unit edits, and start the service again. - Service starts and exits repeatedly: Inspect the encoder’s error output and resource use. Confirm the command, input files, network access, and protected configuration are valid; adjust restart delay if retries are too frequent. Do not treat repeated launches as successful recovery.
- Service is active, but YouTube has no healthy feed: Check connectivity, RTMPS endpoint/path, port 443 and SNI, then inspect YouTube’s stream health configuration issues for media mismatches or insufficient incoming video.
- YouTube receives video but the event is not live: Check that the intended broadcast is associated with the stream and has the appropriate event status. Relaunching the sender does not itself change the broadcast’s state.
- SSH is unavailable after a system or network change: Use DigitalOcean’s Recovery Console for access recovery, then investigate the Droplet. It does not replace a service manager.
