Use the YouTube Data API v3 to automate playlist changes from Linux: authenticate with OAuth, read the playlist and its entries, calculate the change you want, then call the appropriate playlist-items method. Decide first whether you want to reorder existing videos, replace an entry, or make the playlist match a maintained list. The API does not provide a built-in “rotation” policy, and an API key alone cannot authorize playlist changes.
Choose what “rotation” means
Before writing the script, decide what the playlist should look like after each run. These are different jobs, and each requires a different change:

For a video-game channel, for example, a cyclic reorder could rotate a set of trailer videos, while a rolling replacement could keep a fixed-sized playlist of recent game clips. These are your script’s policies, not YouTube-provided rotation modes. Decide whether order or membership matters, how many entries change per run, and what should happen if a run stops partway through.
Set up API access and protect credentials
- Create or select a Google API project and enable the YouTube Data API v3. Configure OAuth for a script that will modify playlists belonging to the account you authorize. The YouTube Data API playlist implementation guide demonstrates playlist operations and OAuth authorization.
- Authorize the account whose playlist the script should change. Playlist mutations require an OAuth 2.0 token. An API key can identify a project for applicable requests, but it does not grant permission to insert, update, or delete playlist entries; see the YouTube Data API reference.
- Keep credentials out of public code. Do not publish a client secret or refresh token in the script or a public repository. The Google API references establish the authorization requirement but do not prescribe a Linux secret-storage method, so choose and verify a secure approach for your environment.
Keep the playlist ID in configuration once you have identified the target playlist. To discover playlists owned by the authenticated account, the implementation guide shows playlists.list with mine=true; that discovery request also requires OAuth.

Read the playlist before changing it
- List entries for the configured playlist. Use
playlistItems.listfor the playlist ID. Follow pagination until you have read the complete result; planning from only the first page can leave the script working with an incomplete view. - Store both identifiers for every entry. A playlist item has its own API
id, while itssnippet.resourceId.videoIdidentifies the video. Updates and deletes target the playlist-item record, not the video ID. Google describes a playlist item as identifying another resource, such as a video, included in a playlist. See the playlistItems resource reference and implementation guide. - Build a plan locally before sending mutations. Compare current state with the desired order or membership. Skip entries already in the right place or membership state so that rerunning the script does not needlessly repeat changes.
The documented playlist-entry methods are list, insert, update, and delete. Google’s playlistItems reference describes the resource and its available methods.
Implement the selected rotation policy
Reorder existing entries
For a cyclic rotation, calculate the intended order from the complete current list, then update the entries whose positions need to change. Explicit positioning requires the playlist to use manual ordering. If it uses another ordering, the API can return manualSortRequired; change the playlist’s ordering setting before asking the API to set positions.

An update needs the playlist-item ID, playlist ID, video resource ID, and the target position. Positions are zero-based: the API guide’s example uses position 0 for the first item. Keep update requests narrow and include the complete values for the properties in the requested part: Google warns that omitted values for mutable properties in that part can be deleted when the request is processed. Replace an entry with a new video
For a rolling playlist, identify the exact playlist-item ID to remove and the video ID to add. Delete the playlist item, then insert a playlist-item resource that references the new video and target playlist. Deleting the playlist item removes that placement from the playlist; it does not delete the underlying video.

Make the removal rule explicit—for example, remove the current first entry or the oldest entry according to a maintained record. Check the planned item and video IDs before issuing either mutation. The insert method documentation describes the playlist and video requirements for insertion.
Match a maintained source list
Read the desired video IDs from a list you control, compare them with the playlist’s current video IDs, and compute the additions and removals. Insert only missing videos and delete only entries that should no longer be present. If order also matters, calculate positions after determining membership and confirm the playlist is manually ordered before updating positions.

Make runs safe to repeat and inspect
- Validate first: ensure the playlist ID, source video IDs, and calculated target positions are present and internally consistent before making changes.
- Apply only differences: make the plan idempotent by skipping work that is already complete.
- Log outcomes: record the operation and API response for each mutation. Stop on an unexpected error rather than continuing to change other entries against a possibly stale plan.
- Verify afterward: fetch the playlist again and compare its resulting order or membership with the planned state.
These are prudent script safeguards, not a guarantee that a series of API calls is atomic. If a run fails partway through, inspect the current playlist and let the next run recalculate from its actual state rather than assuming every planned operation succeeded.

Once manual runs work and the script can obtain its OAuth credentials in the intended environment, schedule it with a task scheduler available on your Linux distribution. Choose an interval that fits how often your playlist should change, and make sure scheduled runs can access the configuration and credentials they need. The Google API documentation cited here does not establish a cron or systemd recipe, so consult the documentation for your chosen scheduler before installing a specific crontab entry or unit file.

Troubleshoot common API failures
manualSortRequired: the playlist is not manually ordered, so the requested explicit position cannot be applied. Change its ordering setting, then retry the planned reorder.- Authorization or access error: confirm the request uses an OAuth token authorized for an account that can modify the playlist. An API key alone is not enough for mutations;
playlistItemsNotAccessibleis among the documented authorization-related errors. - Playlist or video not found: check that the playlist ID and video ID are correct and that the authenticated account can access the target playlist.
- Invalid position: recalculate the target position from the playlist’s current entries; positions are zero-based, and an out-of-range request can fail.
- Playlist at its item limit: an insert may fail if the playlist is already at its limit. Decide which entry should be removed, if any, before retrying.
- Unsupported operation: check whether the requested operation is supported for that playlist or item rather than retrying the same mutation unchanged.
- Unexpected update side effect: review the request’s
partand body. Include the intended values for mutable properties in that part so an omitted value is not cleared.
