You can use YouTube’s REST APIs to automate changes to a YouTube playlist, but changing that playlist is not the same as changing the video playing in an active YouTube Live broadcast. For on-air rotation, a separate playout system must select and send the media; YouTube’s Live Streaming API manages the broadcast and its incoming stream.
First decide what “playlist rotation” means
There are two different tasks that are easy to confuse:
- Maintain a YouTube playlist: list its entries, add videos, or update playlist-item details such as their order, where supported. Use YouTube Data API playlist-item methods for this task.
- Rotate the live program: select the next media item in the audio/video feed currently being sent to a live broadcast. That selection happens in the playout or encoding system supplying the feed, not by assuming a YouTube playlist edit controls what viewers see.
YouTube describes the Live Streaming API as a way to “create, update, and manage live events on YouTube.” Its documented model separates a broadcast event from the incoming audio/video stream associated with it. The reviewed API documentation does not establish playlist-item edits as an on-air media-control function.
Automate YouTube playlist membership or order
1. Set up an authorized API project
Register an application in a Google Cloud project and enable the YouTube Data API. Requests must be authorized by the Google Account that owns the YouTube channel whose playlist you intend to manage. Use the current YouTube Data API method reference to confirm the authorization requirements and supported operations for the target playlist.

2. Identify the playlist item you need to change
Use the playlist-item listing operation to inspect the playlist entries and identify the specific item or items your automation should act on. Build the selection logic around the playlist-item records returned by the API; do not assume that a video’s position or identity in a separate live broadcast is represented by the same operation.
3. Insert or update entries as appropriate
Use the playlist-item insertion method to add an entry, or the update method when you need to change an existing entry. The exact request fields and supported operations depend on the current method reference and the playlist involved. Some playlists may not support an operation and can return an unsupported-operation error, so check support for the specific target and handle that response rather than retrying indefinitely.

4. Verify the resulting playlist
After a write succeeds, list the playlist items again and confirm that its membership or order is what your automation intended. This verifies the playlist state; it does not verify that an active live broadcast has switched media.
Automate rotation in the actual live feed
If viewers must hear or see the next video in a live broadcast, your playout process must choose that media, sequence it into the outgoing audio/video feed, and send the resulting stream to YouTube. The Live Streaming API concerns the broadcast and stream resources, including their association and lifecycle; the official API material reviewed does not prescribe a particular playout product or document playlist edits as a live-feed controller.

- Choose a playout or encoder process. It must be responsible for selecting the media and producing the continuous audio/video feed. Confirm that the solution supports the formats and operating model you need; the YouTube API model alone does not supply this function.
- Configure the YouTube stream and broadcast. Use the Live Streaming API workflow to manage the relevant stream and broadcast resources and associate them. Follow the current official method documentation for request fields, authorization, and valid lifecycle transitions.
- Implement selection and sequencing outside YouTube’s playlist API. Have the playout process advance to the next item in your rotation and keep supplying the resulting feed to YouTube. Keep playlist-maintenance automation separate unless you have a distinct reason to update the public YouTube playlist too.
- Test before switching production viewers. Use a non-public broadcast while validating media transitions, stream delivery, and broadcast state. Monitor the stream and broadcast before automating production transitions; a successful playlist API response is not proof that the on-air feed changed.
Keep the two automations separate

Troubleshoot the common boundary errors
- The YouTube playlist changes, but the live program does not. The playlist-item operation changed playlist data. Move rotation logic into the system producing the live feed.
- A playlist-item operation is rejected as unsupported. Support can depend on the playlist and operation. Check the current method reference for that target and use an operation it supports.
- The API request is unauthorized. Confirm the application is authorized in the context of the Google Account that owns the broadcasting channel, and that the project has the YouTube Data API enabled.
- The broadcast exists, but the expected media is not reaching it. Check the separate stream association and lifecycle, then inspect the playout/encoder that supplies the incoming audio/video. A broadcast resource is not itself the media player.
- Automation reports success but viewers see the wrong item. Validate the outgoing feed and monitor the broadcast state; do not treat a playlist edit or successful API call as evidence of an on-air transition.
