These are separate safeguards: OBS reconnect can recover supported output interruptions, but it cannot guarantee recovery from a crashed process, invalid key, or a YouTube broadcast-state problem.
Test the full setup before leaving it unattended. A VPS located in India does not by itself guarantee a reliable route to YouTube’s ingest servers; verify the host’s sustained network capacity and the stream’s health in YouTube Studio.
1. Set up the YouTube encoder feed

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires a server URL and stream key; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream URL and key if using a custom server configuration. If OBS offers a direct YouTube account connection, confirm that the selected stream and key are the intended ones. YouTube describes the stream key as similar to a password: keep it private, and replace it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed. See Manage live stream settings.

Check YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings for the broadcast you selected. Those settings control whether the encoder can start or stop the stream; confirm the scheduled or live setup rather than assuming reconnect settings control broadcast state. YouTube documents these options in Manage live stream settings.
2. Choose stable encoder settings for the VPS connection
Set resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to suit both the content and the VPS’s sustained upload capability. YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that a particular VPS can sustain them. Other codecs have different recommendations; consult YouTube’s current table in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Check the hosting plan’s network capacity and monitor actual upload stability at the chosen bitrate. “India VPS” describes a location, not the quality of the route to YouTube’s ingest server.

Use a setting the connection can sustain reliably, rather than choosing the highest resolution or bitrate the encoder permits. YouTube recommends selecting reliable settings for the available connection.

Watch for dropped frames and intermittent disconnections. OBS notes these can indicate a network issue between the encoder and remote ingest server, with possible causes beyond OBS itself. Diagnose host stability, congestion, route, and configuration rather than expecting reconnect alone to fix a weak connection. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting (2024-09-30).
3. Enable OBS automatic reconnect
OBS exposes reconnect controls for supported outputs. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced → Network and enable Automatically Reconnect if that option is available for your version and output. Choose a retry delay and retry limit appropriate to your operation; exact labels can vary by OBS version and output.

OBS’s output documentation specifies that a retry count of zero disables reconnect, and that the wait time doubles after each retry to avoid overloading services. It does not establish infinite retries or guarantee that every interruption will recover. Check the OBS Output API Reference for the documented behavior of supported outputs.
4. Add a process supervisor for encoder crashes
Automatic reconnect addresses interruptions while an encoder output is still running. If OBS or another encoder exits or crashes, its own reconnect feature cannot relaunch the process. Configure a separate process supervisor on the VPS to restart the encoder when it exits, and check that the supervisor records restart events and does not create an uncontrolled rapid restart loop.
A restarted encoder still needs a valid stream key and a YouTube broadcast that will accept the feed. Process supervision is not a check of YouTube’s stream state, credentials, or viewer playback; monitor those separately.

5. Verify recovery before leaving the stream unattended

Start the stream and confirm the encoder reports that it is sending.

Deliberately interrupt the encoder’s network connection, then restore it. Observe whether OBS reconnects and whether the supervisor behaves as intended if you separately test an encoder-process exit.

In YouTube Studio, check stream health and status. The Live Streaming API’s stream resource distinguishes states such as
active(data is being received),inactive(data is not being received),ready,created, anderror. These are stream-resource states, not a complete description of every live-broadcast lifecycle state. Open the viewer-facing watch page and confirm playback resumes; an encoder reconnect message alone does not prove viewers can watch the broadcast.

If you rely on local recording or an archive, verify the resulting file or archive separately. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and checking the event page and archive in its YouTube live streaming tips.
6. Plan around the archive limit for continuous streams
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise one complete archive for a continuous 24/7 broadcast. If retaining a complete recording matters, plan separate recordings or stream segments and verify the archive behavior you need; do not treat a day-long continuous stream as a guaranteed single replay. 7. Troubleshoot common reconnection failures
