On a Linux host using systemd, run FFmpeg as a service and set Restart=on-failure. That lets systemd relaunch FFmpeg after qualifying failures. It does not, by itself, reconnect every input, recover every output, or detect a process that stays alive while the lecture stream is frozen. Those are separate failure layers, and the right fix depends on your protocols and installed FFmpeg build.
Know which failure you need to recover from
Automatic recovery can happen inside FFmpeg or outside it. FFmpeg can retry certain supported input connections and attempt recovery from some output failures; systemd can relaunch the process if it exits. A still-running process that has stopped producing useful media needs a separate health check or watchdog design.
| Failure layer | Mechanism | What it does—and does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Input connection | FFmpeg protocol reconnect options | Retries certain supported input errors. It does not relaunch an exited FFmpeg process. |
| Output connection | FFmpeg FIFO muxer recovery options | Attempts recovery from supported output failures, particularly with network output. It does not restart an exited process. |
| Process | systemd service with Restart=on-failure |
Relaunches FFmpeg after qualifying failures. It does not detect every frozen stream. |
| Stalled stream | A separately designed health check or supported watchdog notification | Can detect a process that remains alive but makes no useful progress; the check must define a measurable signal for your stream. |
The examples below cover Linux with systemd. The title does not specify an operating system, FFmpeg version, input or output protocol, or streaming platform, so treat the commands and settings as a pattern to adapt—not a tested, universal configuration. Consult the systemd.service manual, FFmpeg Protocols Documentation, and FFmpeg muxers documentation for the installed versions.
Run FFmpeg under systemd
Create a service unit
Use an absolute path to the FFmpeg executable and substitute your real service account, working directory, and complete FFmpeg arguments. The unit below illustrates the restart pattern; it is not a drop-in file for every deployment. Make sure the service account can read the lecture source and credentials and can write any required logs or output.

User=stream
WorkingDirectory=/srv/lecture-stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [your existing FFmpeg arguments]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Restart=on-failure is the key setting. Per systemd’s service documentation, it applies to non-zero exits, qualifying signal termination, operation timeouts, and triggered watchdog timeouts. A stop initiated through systemd’s own service operation does not itself trigger an automatic restart. RestartSec=5s is an example delay, not a prescribed value; choose a delay suitable for your environment and avoid rapid, unbounded restart loops.
Enable, start, and inspect the service
Save the unit in the host’s normal systemd unit location, then use the usual systemd administration workflow. For a unit named lecture-stream.service, the common commands are:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now lecture-stream.service
sudo systemctl status lecture-stream.service
sudo journalctl -u lecture-stream.service
Keep the journal available for diagnosis. Confirm command syntax and restart behavior against the systemd version on your host, and check that no wrapper script converts an FFmpeg failure into a successful exit; otherwise systemd may not see the failure you intend it to restart.
Handle input and output failures inside FFmpeg
Reconnect supported inputs
For HTTP inputs, FFmpeg documents options including reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and reconnect_streamed, along with delay and retry limits. Their applicability depends on the protocol and failure type. Do not copy a flag list blindly: check the installed FFmpeg build, identify the actual input protocol, and select appropriate retry and delay bounds for the outage you expect. The protocol documentation defines the options; for example, it describes reconnect for disconnects before EOF and reconnect_at_eof for treating EOF as an error for reconnection in live or endless streams.

Attempt recovery from output failures
The FIFO muxer documents attempt_recovery for trying to recover after output failure, particularly with network output. It also documents drop_pkts_on_overflow, which can let encoding continue when a queue fills, at the cost of dropping packets. Packet loss may be unacceptable for a lecture, so decide whether that trade-off fits your stream before using it. These FIFO options are not a substitute for systemd restarting FFmpeg after the process exits; see the muxers documentation and verify the syntax for your build.
Troubleshoot the failure you actually see
- FFmpeg exits and does not return: inspect
systemctl status lecture-stream.serviceand the service journal for the exit reason. Confirm the unit hasRestart=on-failureand that any wrapper preserves a failing exit status. - An HTTP input disconnects: verify that your FFmpeg build and input protocol support the reconnect option you plan to use. Set retry limits and delays for the expected outage rather than assuming one option covers all disconnects.
- Network output fails temporarily: consider FIFO muxer recovery and decide whether continued encoding with dropped packets is acceptable for the lecture.
- The process is active but viewers see a frozen stream: restart-on-exit may not trigger because FFmpeg has not exited. Define a measurable health signal, such as expected output progress, and build a deliberate monitor or supported watchdog design around it. The cited manuals do not establish one universal stream-health test.
- The service restarts repeatedly or too quickly: use the journal to find the underlying error, then review restart spacing and systemd rate-limit policy. Repeated relaunches are not proof that the stream has recovered.
- A manual stop starts the service again: distinguish a systemd-managed stop from a process failure. A stop initiated by the service manager is not itself a restart trigger under the documented policy.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your lecture is a prerecorded video for a YouTube channel, StreamNeo is an alternative to maintaining a host and supervising FFmpeg yourself. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is YouTube-only and does not stream from a camera.

Will systemd restart FFmpeg after an intentional stop?
A stop initiated through systemd’s own service operation does not itself trigger automatic restart under the documented policy.

What if FFmpeg stays running but the stream freezes?
An exit-based restart policy may not trigger. You need a separate health signal and monitoring or watchdog design suited to your stream.
Can FFmpeg reconnect flags replace a systemd service?
No. Reconnect flags cover particular supported input failures; FIFO recovery covers certain output failures. Neither is a general replacement for a supervisor that relaunches an exited process.
