YouTube normally archives eligible live streams automatically. After a stream ends, open YouTube Studio > Content > Live to find and manage its recording. The important exception: streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so YouTube recommends keeping a separate local recording as a backup. YouTube Help documents this archive behavior; its page does not state a publication or revision date.
How YouTube saves a live stream automatically
You generally do not need to enable a separate archive switch. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, and its promotion guidance says the archive is uploaded by default. This applies to eligible encoder, webcam, and mobile streams. Once the broadcast ends, the archive appears in YouTube Studio, where you can review it and change its visibility or delete it. YouTube’s archive instructions explain the process, while its promotion guidance describes the default upload behavior.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Choose Content in the left menu, then open the Live tab.
- Select the stream to review its archive and visibility. Use the available controls there to change visibility or delete the archive.
For an archive of a mobile stream, YouTube also says it can be managed from My videos.
The 12-hour limit—and why long streams need a backup
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured. Treat the archive as convenient for shorter broadcasts, not as your only copy of a long gaming marathon, charity event, or all-day channel. For a broadcast that might cross the limit, keep an independent local recording. YouTube specifically recommends recording a local archive as a backup.

DVR is not the archive setting
DVR controls the live viewing experience: viewers can pause or rewind while the broadcast is in progress. Turning DVR off does not, by itself, stop the full recording from appearing after the stream ends. You can therefore make a separate choice about live DVR without confusing it with post-stream archiving. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Keep a local recording as a second copy
YouTube recommends a local archive for backup. If you stream with an encoder, use recording-capable streaming software to save the outgoing program while broadcasting; YouTube lists Open Broadcaster Software among its encoder options. The exact recording controls depend on the software, so follow its own documentation rather than assuming one universal menu path.

Before a long broadcast, check that the selected destination has enough free space for the intended resolution, bitrate, and duration, and confirm that you can retrieve the file afterward. A local drive is sufficient if it has capacity; an external drive is an optional destination, not a requirement. YouTube’s archive guidance recommends a local backup but does not prescribe a particular capacity or recording configuration.

If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded video looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than archive a live gaming session, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo says it does not re-encode the video and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
