To recover an FFmpeg YouTube stream after a VPS rebuild or lost files, back up the complete launch path—not just the main script. That means its referenced configuration and preset files, required environment settings, service or scheduler definition, and an inventory of the runtime and inputs. Keep a copy off the VPS, protect stream keys as secrets, and prove the backup is usable with a test restore.
A YouTube backup ingestion URL is different: it is a second destination for a live feed, not a backup of your FFmpeg command, scripts, service definition, or VPS configuration.
What to include in a recoverable backup
Start from the exact command or script that launches FFmpeg, then follow every reference it makes. A backup of a script alone may not be enough if that script expects a preset, environment file, playlist, overlay, or service definition elsewhere.
- Launch logic: the shell script or command, any sourced shell files, and the working directory it expects.
- Configuration: referenced FFmpeg presets, application configuration, non-secret environment settings, and local playlist or overlay assets needed to resume the stream.
- Automation: the service-manager unit, timer, cron entry, or other scheduler that starts or restarts FFmpeg.
- Recovery inventory: installed FFmpeg version, input files or URLs, relevant paths, required permissions, and the restart procedure.
- Secrets: stream keys and credential-bearing URLs, handled separately from ordinary configuration.
Paths depend on the administrator’s VPS setup; do not assume a universal script, service, or configuration location. Trace the actual launch process and record the paths it uses. Avoid backing up transient state or large source media unless those files are required to resume the stream.

Separate credentials from ordinary settings
Treat YouTube stream keys as credentials. YouTube’s HLS guidance warns that the backup server URL may already include the stream key, so a copied ingestion URL can itself be secret. Do not commit keys or such URLs to a public repository, include them in diagnostic logs, or leave them in an unrestricted backup. YouTube Help: Set up an HLS stream.
If a secret must be recoverable, place it in a restricted, encrypted backup and document how an authorized operator can retrieve it. Keep the backup repository’s password or other recovery access information separately and securely: a backup that cannot be decrypted is not a usable backup.

Choose a repository independent of the VPS
Keep at least one backup copy somewhere other than the server being protected. A repository stored only on the VPS does not help if that VPS or its attached storage is lost. Restic 0.19.1 supports local and remote repositories; select a remote destination you control and retain the credentials needed to access it. Its documentation covers preparing a repository.
Choose explicit source paths after reviewing the launch dependencies. Restic’s backup documentation notes an important exclusion edge case: exclude patterns do not filter a path that you explicitly pass as a backup source. Check the source list and exclusions together rather than assuming an exclusion protects a mistakenly included file. See restic’s backup documentation.

Build and verify the backup workflow
- Trace the live launch path. Identify the exact FFmpeg invocation and inspect its script, referenced files, environment, service or scheduler, input assets, and working directory. Record dependencies and the installed FFmpeg version.
- Classify every file. Mark ordinary settings, required assets, transient files, and secrets. Decide which items are necessary for recovery; keep secrets in a restricted, encrypted location rather than an ordinary code repository.
- Prepare an independent repository. Initialize the selected local or remote repository according to the installed backup tool’s documentation. Store repository access details safely and separately from the VPS.
- Review the planned source paths. Run a dry run where supported, inspect the proposed file list, and verify that exclusions behave as intended—especially for paths explicitly named as sources.
- Schedule the reviewed backup. Automate the backup using a schedule appropriate to how often the configuration changes. Do not assume a job succeeded merely because it ran; check its result and periodically verify repository health using the installed tool’s current documentation.
- Restore to a separate temporary target. Follow restic’s restore documentation or the equivalent for your tool. Check that the expected files are present, permissions are suitable, and service or scheduler references point to files that were actually restored.
- Validate before returning to service. Review the restored command and configuration, retrieve secrets through the authorized process, and confirm the FFmpeg version and inputs. Then restart the service and inspect YouTube’s Live Control Room and stream health.
Recheck FFmpeg behavior after restoration
A restored command can still fail if its inputs, installed version, or option placement differ from the original environment. FFmpeg options normally apply to the next input or output, and default stream selection can choose streams based on properties such as resolution or audio channel count. Compare the restored invocation against the actual input and output you intend to use; do not assume a command copied from an old server will behave identically. See the FFmpeg documentation.
A local FFmpeg process running is not proof that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. After restart, check YouTube’s stream status and health diagnostics; the YouTube Live Streaming API liveStreams documentation describes those status and health fields.

Keep a YouTube backup feed distinct from a configuration backup
YouTube’s backup ingestion address is for sending a second copy of the live content to YouTube alongside the primary feed. It does not preserve the local FFmpeg script, settings, or VPS setup. Also, YouTube’s HLS instructions apply to HLS workflows specifically: HLS uses an HTTPS ingestion URL, sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP feed, and has requirements for segment duration, rolling playlists, request methods, and supported codecs. Do not apply those HLS constraints to an RTMP workflow; consult YouTube’s HLS setup instructions if you are configuring HLS.
