First check whether the game supports cloud saves, a manual save-file copy, or a game-specific backup feature. Confirm the backup’s date or status, and don’t choose an upload, download, or restore option until you know which copy it will replace.
Before you start: identify the save and backup method
Save rules can vary by game, edition, platform, and account. Confirm which profile owns the save and how the game backs it up before changing anything. A backup of the game’s installation may not include its saves: Valve says its Steam Backup Feature does not include saved games for Valve-created titles, while save locations for other developers vary. - Cloud save: Use the game or platform’s cloud-save feature, if that specific game supports it.
- Manual copy: Use only a save location or export procedure documented for your game and platform. A USB device is an option only on systems that allow copying saves.
- Game-specific backup: Some games provide their own backup or restoration process; follow the game’s instructions rather than assuming a platform cloud save covers it.
Back up the save in a few careful steps
- Close the game cleanly. This gives it a chance to finish writing the latest save. Check the game’s save screen or the platform’s save-data screen for the current timestamp or status.
- Check for a current cloud copy. If the game uses cloud saves, confirm the sync is complete. Compare the cloud and local timestamps before choosing an upload, download, or restore action. A restore can replace the other copy.
- Make a separate copy if supported. Use the game’s documented save-copy or export procedure and store the copied save separately from the game installation. Do not assume that backing up or reinstalling the game files also backs up the save.
- Keep the backup untouched during installation. Once you have confirmed the copy is current, leave it in place while installing the DLC.
- Verify before cleanup. Reopen the game, select the expected profile, and check that the intended save loads before deleting or replacing any backup.
Nintendo Switch: compare cloud and console timestamps first
Nintendo Switch Save Data Cloud requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s instructions allow downloads from the software menu or System Settings, and automatic downloads can be enabled. Before choosing a direction, compare the console and cloud save timestamps: Nintendo advises backing up the console copy if it is newer, or downloading the cloud copy if that one is newer. Its guidance warns that overwriting either copy cannot be undone. See Nintendo’s download instructions and guidance on missing cloud backups and timestamps.
For a download, Nintendo warns: “Save data downloaded from the backup will replace the existing save data on the console for that game. The overwritten data cannot be recovered.” Treat the download as an overwrite, not as a harmless extra copy. Nintendo also states that users whose membership expires can regain access to cloud backups if they begin a new membership within 180 days; see its membership and cloud-backup guidance for the stated conditions.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons has a separate island-backup process
Animal Crossing: New Horizons uses a game-specific island backup feature. Nintendo says DLC must also be downloaded on a replacement console to access that content after restoring island data. This is a title-specific example: restoring a save does not necessarily install its add-on content. See Nintendo’s island backup and restoration instructions.
Steam and PC: don’t confuse a game backup with a save backup
Steam Cloud stores saves and settings for games that use it; availability depends on the individual game. Steam says offline play delays syncing until the game is online again and is likely to cause a conflict. Check that sync has completed and review any conflict choices before letting one copy replace another. Steam also says it is unlikely that support can recover lost saves. See Steam Cloud guidance.

Steam’s Backup Feature copies compatible game files, but Valve-created games’ backups do not include saved games; third-party save locations vary by developer. Find the save’s documented location or export method for the specific game instead of relying on the installation backup. See Valve’s explanation of the Backup Feature.
USB copies: use them only when the platform supports save copying
Activision recommends backing up saved game data to online storage or a USB storage device before deleting it, but that does not mean every console or game allows individual save files to be copied. Check the instructions for your exact platform and title before using a USB drive; no universal copying procedure applies. See Activision’s guidance on clearing cache and deleting files.

If the save seems missing after installation
Pause before repeatedly launching or saving on multiple devices. Steam documents cloud conflicts, and Nintendo warns that a download can replace the console copy; a new sync could overwrite the version you meant to preserve. First check the game’s profile, local save status, cloud status, and timestamps. If there is a conflict, do not select an overwrite option until you have identified which copy you want to keep.
