There are two Hornet boss fights in Hollow Knight: Hornet Protector in Greenpath and Hornet Sentinel in Kingdom’s Edge. Protector is the earlier encounter and rewards the Mothwing Cloak; Sentinel is a later, faster rematch with added hazards. The advice below reflects mechanics and strategy notes documented by the community-maintained Hornet Protector and Hornet Sentinel pages, not firsthand testing.
Which Hornet fight are you facing?
Check the location: the Greenpath encounter is Hornet Protector; the fight at the entrance to the Cast-Off Shell in Kingdom’s Edge is Hornet Sentinel. Their shared attacks reward careful timing, but Sentinel has substantially more health, moves faster, and introduces a parry and lingering spike traps.
How to beat Hornet Protector in Greenpath
Hornet Protector has 225 health according to the Hornet Protector reference page. Defeating her awards the Mothwing Cloak, which gives the Knight a dash and opens up further exploration.
Read her attacks and look for openings
- Forward lunge: Hornet rushes along the ground. The page’s strategy notes recommend using the opening after a lunge to land Nail hits or use Soul.
- Aerial lunge: She attacks from above. Keep space and be ready to move clear rather than committing to a slow attack.
- Thread storm: Threads spread around Hornet. The page describes this as limited in range and suggests it can provide a chance to heal if you are safely outside the attack.
- Needle throw: Her needle travels forward and returns. The page likewise identifies the move’s limited range and recovery time as a possible healing opportunity.
When Hornet moves out of Nail range, the page recommends using Vengeful Spirit to deal damage at a distance. It also says she staggers after roughly one-fifth of her health is removed; if you need to recover, use the stagger window to heal rather than forcing another attack. These move labels are descriptive, not necessarily official in-game names.

How to beat Hornet Sentinel in Kingdom’s Edge
Hornet Sentinel has 700 health, and her familiar attacks come at a faster pace. The Hornet Sentinel reference page also describes two additional threats: a defensive parry followed by a counterattack, and spike traps that hang in the arena until cleared.
Adapt to the faster fight and new hazards
- Do not strike into the parry: When Hornet takes a defensive stance, avoid attacking into it; the stance is followed by a counterattack.
- Clear or avoid spike traps: The suspended traps remain in the arena. The page recommends Vengeful Spirit or Shade Soul as ranged attacks that can also clear them.
- Use distance and movement: The page suggests dashing over lunges and using spells to damage Hornet from range, which can help keep space between attacks.
The Sentinel page notes that most attack names used by the wiki are non-canon. Treat names and descriptions here as a way to recognize attack patterns, not as confirmed labels shown by the game.

What defeating Hornet unlocks
Beating Hornet Protector grants the Mothwing Cloak and its dash ability. The Sentinel encounter is a later fight in Kingdom’s Edge; the cited encounter reference does not identify a comparable new ability reward.
