You can start streaming games with a console, phone, or computer that can broadcast, a stable internet connection, and a platform account in good standing. You do not need a high-end PC, microphone, or camera to begin. Pick the simplest workflow you already own, run a short test, and build a stream around clear commentary and interaction. Monetization is a separate step: having access to creator tools does not necessarily mean you qualify for payouts.
What you need to start streaming
- A game device and a way to broadcast: Twitch describes computers, phones, consoles, and software encoders as possible broadcast devices. YouTube also supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console streaming. Confirm that your particular game device supports the method and platform you plan to use.
- A stable internet connection: Twitch identifies this and a way to encode and send the broadcast as practical starting requirements.
- A platform account that can go live: Read the platform’s current access requirements before planning a stream. YouTube’s requirements are covered below.
- Optional audio or video equipment: Twitch says a microphone and camera are not required. You can start with the audio equipment you have; a microphone or headset can be a later improvement if clearer voice audio suits your format.
There is no universal PC specification or startup budget established for every streaming setup. Performance depends on your game, device, and broadcast method, so avoid buying a computer or capture hardware before checking compatibility for your own workflow.
Choose a streaming workflow
Stream directly from a console
If your console and chosen platform support direct broadcasting, this is often the simplest setup: configure the platform connection on the console, select the game, and start a test broadcast. Menus and available options vary by console and platform, so follow the current instructions for your device.
Use a phone
Twitch and YouTube list mobile as a broadcast option. Check that your account and the content you want to stream are eligible for mobile live streaming. A phone can be enough for a simple setup, but game capture and audio options depend on the device and game.

Broadcast from a computer
A computer can run the game and broadcasting software, or receive gameplay from another device, depending on your setup. Before going live, confirm that the encoder can capture the game and send a stable broadcast. If you are streaming console gameplay through a computer, check whether your specific workflow requires additional capture hardware; it is not mandatory for every setup.

YouTube Live
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says a creator must have a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction during the previous 90 days, and be at least 16 years old. Streams must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Available methods include mobile, webcam, encoder, and console. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming help for account and device-specific details.

Twitch
Choose a broadcast method supported by your device, then set up the stream in the platform or encoder workflow you selected. Twitch’s streaming guide and FAQ cover starting a broadcast and common setup questions; options vary with the device and software.
Prepare and test your first broadcast
- Choose a game and a workable format. Decide what viewers will see and what you can comfortably talk about: a playthrough, ranked matches, practice, or a challenge are examples, not guaranteed growth formulas.
- Set up the stream on your chosen device. Follow the platform’s current console, mobile, webcam, or encoder instructions. No single bitrate, resolution, or encoder setting applies to every device and connection; use the guidance for your chosen workflow and test for stability.
- Make the stream identifiable. Add a clear title and the appropriate game or category where the platform offers those fields. Set chat moderation options that fit your audience and comfort level.
- Run a short, low-stakes test. Check that gameplay is visible, game audio is audible, and your voice can be heard if you use a microphone. Watch for interruptions or audio that overwhelms the commentary. The platforms do not prescribe a universal test duration.
- Go live and talk through the gameplay. Explain decisions and what is happening, greet people who join, and keep the commentary moving during quieter moments. Twitch identifies audience interaction as important; you do not need to wait for a large audience to practice it.
- Choose a schedule you can sustain. Make streams easy to identify and return to, but do not treat any particular frequency as a proven growth formula. The reviewed platform guidance does not establish a guaranteed schedule or route to an audience.

Twitch says all four achievements must be completed to receive an invitation. Two-factor authentication is required to begin onboarding. Twitch’s Affiliate Program guidance explains the current requirements.

Twitch’s May 13, 2026 announcement says eligible streamers globally can access features such as Channel Points, subscriptions, emotes, badges, and Bits, but receiving a payout still requires Affiliate or Partner status. Access to a feature is not the same as payout eligibility. If invited to onboard as an Affiliate, Twitch’s process includes enabling two-factor authentication, completing account details and the Monetized Streamer Agreement, and completing applicable tax interviews and payout setup. Regional requirements can differ; see Twitch’s Affiliate onboarding guide and May 13, 2026 monetization announcement.
Partner is a further tier, not an automatic next step: Twitch describes Partner applications as reviewed and selection-based. See its Partner Program overview.

YouTube and other income
Being able to start a YouTube live stream does not by itself establish eligibility for YouTube monetization or a payout. Check YouTube’s current monetization policies and your account’s eligibility before relying on income. Sponsorships may be an option for some creators and audiences, but they are not guaranteed. No universal expected income or time to success is established.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common first-stream problems
- The platform will not let you go live: Check the account standing and access conditions for your chosen platform. For YouTube, confirm channel verification, age eligibility, and whether a live-stream restriction occurred during the prior 90 days.
- The stream is unstable or stops: Confirm the internet connection is stable and the selected broadcast workflow is compatible with your device. If using a computer encoder, check that it can capture the game and send the broadcast reliably; adjust settings according to the encoder and platform guidance rather than assuming one universal value.
- Viewers cannot hear the game or your voice: Check the selected audio sources and levels in the console or encoder setup, then test again. A microphone is optional; if you use one, make sure it is selected and not muted.
- The picture is missing or shows the wrong content: Verify the game or capture source selected in the broadcast setup, and check device compatibility. Capture hardware may be needed for some workflows, but not all.
- Chat feels difficult to manage: Set moderation controls before going live and decide how you want to handle disruptive messages. Keep attention on the game and audience interaction you can manage.
- You expected an immediate payout: Separate access to individual creator tools from payout eligibility. On Twitch, payout requires Affiliate or Partner status; onboarding, tax documentation, and payout setup may also apply.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep prerecorded gameplay or other uploaded videos live on YouTube 24/7, that is different from broadcasting live gameplay from a camera or game session. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos to a YouTube channel: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start your free day.
