Use a child account and the platform’s family controls to restrict age-rated games. On PlayStation, also set communication and user-generated-content restrictions, and review separate controls for web, discs, and services. On Xbox, manage age-appropriate filters through the Xbox Family Settings app or Microsoft family group. These controls limit a child account’s platform access; they do not necessarily govern every third-party game or service.
Start with a child account and family controls
Set up a family and add the child’s account before choosing restrictions. On both platforms, parental controls are associated with family or child accounts, so check that the child is using the account you intend to manage. The available settings and menu names can vary by console, account, and region.
Restrict games and content on PlayStation
Set up the child’s family account
Create a PlayStation family and add the child as a family member. Sony lists three ways to do this: the PlayStation Family app, Account Management online, or on PS5 through Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. Sony notes that console controls depend in part on the device being used; PS4 and PS5 menu names may differ. Sony’s parental-controls guide covers the available routes.
Choose a game age level
Set the child’s game age level in parental controls. PlayStation supports age levels for PS5, PS4, and PS3 games. On PS5, the child can request an exception for a restricted game; a parent or guardian can review and allow or deny that specific request rather than raising the general restriction. Restrict communication and user-generated content
In parental controls, set Communication and User-Generated Content to Restrict to disable sending text messages and voice-chatting with other players, sharing the child’s user-generated content, viewing other players’ user-generated content, and linking certain third-party services or apps with communication or user-generated-content features. Sony says pre-written in-game messages may still be allowed, so this setting does not necessarily remove every in-game interaction. Sony’s guide explains the restriction.
Set other limits separately
A game age level is not a universal block on other content. PlayStation lists separate controls for Blu-ray and DVD age levels, web browsing, age filtering for online content, services and apps, privacy, playtime, and monthly spending. Review the settings that match the child’s use rather than assuming the game restriction covers them all. Some controls depend on the console or device.

Check Roblox and other third-party services
PlayStation specifically says Roblox communications are independent of the communication settings selected for a PS4 or PS5. Roblox chat depends on the Roblox account’s age band or permissions managed through Roblox’s parental settings. If a child plays Roblox, review those controls in addition to PlayStation’s. Set family controls on Xbox
Use the Xbox Family Settings app or the family group at account.microsoft.com/family to manage the child’s settings. Xbox’s family hub identifies age-appropriate content filters, privacy, online purchases, and screen time as family-control options. It also says app- and game-specific time limits can be set through the Microsoft family group and shared across Xbox consoles and Windows devices. Visit the Xbox family settings hub.

For device-specific instructions, use Xbox’s current family controls and support pages rather than relying on menu names that may change. The Xbox support page titled “Block inappropriate content” is available at Xbox Support. Check the live app for the exact content-filter and communication options available to your account.

Check the game or service as well
Console family controls govern capabilities associated with the platform account, not necessarily every feature inside a third-party game or service. Review each service’s own age, chat, and content settings where available. Roblox is a documented example: its communications are controlled independently from PlayStation’s communication restrictions.
