Yes—you can boot a legitimate 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 installation from a microSD card while leaving SteamOS on the Deck’s internal SSD. This guide creates a Windows To Go-style installation with Rufus, not a normal Windows installer card. It is a community workaround: Valve supplies Deck drivers “as is” and does not provide full Windows-on-Steam-Hardware support. A microSD setup is convenient and reversible, but it boots, updates and runs games more slowly—and usually wears out sooner—than an SSD.
What this method does
Windows is installed directly on the removable microSD card. SteamOS remains on the internal NVMe drive, so you switch systems by choosing a boot device at startup. This is different from:
- Windows installation media: a card or USB that only launches an installer for Windows installed somewhere else.
- Internal Windows installation: Windows replaces or partitions the internal drive and is more invasive.
- Windows To Go: the operating system itself lives on removable storage. That is the method used here.
Do not select the internal SSD in Rufus or Windows Setup. A mistake there can erase SteamOS or personal data.

Valve publishes Windows drivers for both LCD and OLED Decks, but its Windows resources are supplied “as is”; this is not an official SteamOS dual-boot feature or a supported Windows product. Valve’s notes also say official SteamOS dual-boot tooling is unavailable. An external Windows card can still boot through the Deck’s UEFI menu, but troubleshooting remains your responsibility. Choose the card, Deck model and Windows version
Hardware checklist
- Steam Deck LCD or OLED.
- A blank, genuine microSD card. Use 256GB as a practical minimum; 512GB gives substantially more room for updates, paging, applications and games. These are recommendations, not Valve requirements.
- UHS-I, U3/V30 media, preferably with an A2 application-performance rating, from a reputable seller with a warranty and return policy.
- A Windows PC, card reader or USB adapter, and a backup of anything on the card.
- Keyboard and mouse for setup; a USB-C hub, dock or Ethernet adapter may be needed before Wi-Fi drivers are installed.
- Power connected to the Deck during installation.
MicroSD cards have lower random performance and finite write endurance. Windows updates, caches, paging and game installs can make a poor or counterfeit card slow, read-only or corrupt. For frequent Windows gaming or desktop work, an external SSD is normally the better choice.
LCD versus OLED
Identify your model before downloading drivers. Valve provides separate LCD and OLED packages and procedures. Update SteamOS and Deck firmware fully first; Valve’s OLED notes include a historical SteamOS Beta 3.6.9-or-later Bluetooth prerequisite, but the applicable firmware requirement can change.
Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Download a current 64-bit x86 ISO directly from Microsoft: Windows 11 or Windows 10. The Deck needs x64, not ARM64; Microsoft’s ARM guidance is for ARM computers (ARM ISO information). Windows 11 is the more relevant long-term choice for current software, although its setup checks and account requirements vary by build. Windows 10 may suit a legacy workflow, but its support and security status are time-sensitive. Match the ISO edition to the license you intend to activate.
Step 1: Download Valve’s drivers before first boot
Open Valve’s Windows Resources page and download the package for the exact LCD or OLED model. Copy the extracted folders to another USB drive or to accessible space on the card.

LCD driver files
- APU: run
setup.exe. - Wi-Fi: run
install.bat. - Bluetooth: run
installdriver.cmd. - SD-card reader: run
setup.exe. - Audio: right-click each relevant
.inffile and choose Install.
OLED driver files
- APU and SD-card reader: run each package’s
setup.exe. - Wi-Fi: right-click
qcwlan64.infand choose Install. - Bluetooth: right-click
qcbtuart.infand choose Install. - Install all three listed audio packages through their
.inffiles.
In Windows 11, an INF can appear as a “Setup Information” file. Use Show more options if the Install command is hidden. Do not use unofficial “all-in-one” driver bundles.
Step 2: Create the Windows microSD with Rufus
- Insert the blank card into the preparation PC and close any window that might be using it.
- Download Rufus from its official site, rufus.ie.
- Open Rufus. Under Device, identify the microSD by its name and capacity—not merely its drive letter.
- Under Boot selection, choose the Microsoft ISO.
- Set Image option to Windows To Go, when that option is available for the selected ISO. Keep Rufus’s UEFI/GPT defaults unless it presents a specific compatibility choice for your build.
- Click Start and confirm the erase warning only after checking the target device again.
Rufus is third-party software and its labels change between releases. It may offer customization choices such as creating a local account, removing online-account requirements, applying privacy defaults, or bypassing RAM, Secure Boot and TPM checks. Select only the options you understand; a bypass does not make unsupported hardware officially supported. Rufus erases the selected card.
Step 3: Boot the Deck from the card
- Fully shut down the Deck; do not merely suspend or restart it.
- Hold Volume Down and press Power once.
- Release the buttons when the boot-device menu appears.
- Select the microSD UEFI entry, commonly
EFI SD/MMC,UEFI: SDor a similar card/device label—not the internal NVMe drive.
The exact label depends on firmware and card presentation. If the card is missing, use the troubleshooting section below.

Step 4: Complete Windows Setup safely
- A keyboard and mouse make setup easier. The display may be rotated into portrait orientation; Valve documents this as expected during installation.
- Touch input and graphics may be incomplete until drivers are installed.
- Wi-Fi may not work yet. Use USB-C Ethernet through a dock or adapter if setup requires networking.
- If asked for a product key, choose the option to activate later when appropriate. Installation is not activation; you still need a valid license for the installed edition.
- Expect a longer installation and a slow first boot while Windows detects hardware and builds its driver cache.
- Never choose the internal SSD as the installation destination. The Windows To Go card should already be the running system.

Step 5: Install drivers in a reliable order
- APU/GPU: install first; it controls graphics, display behavior and contributes to audio support.
- SD-card reader.
- Wi-Fi.
- Bluetooth.
- Audio: install every package listed for the exact model.
- Restart after major driver groups, run Windows Update, restart again, then inspect Device Manager for unknown devices.
Valve specifically warns LCD users not to omit the updated APU driver when setting up audio. Use only the files from Valve’s current page.
Switching between Windows and SteamOS
Leave the card inserted or remove it while the Deck is powered off. To choose manually, use Volume Down + Power and select the Windows card’s UEFI entry or the internal SteamOS entry. Removing the card and starting normally should return you to SteamOS. Never remove the card while Windows is running, writing updates or shutting down.

The card is absent from the boot menu
- Power off completely, reinsert the card and try again.
- Confirm Rufus finished successfully and that you selected the intended device.
- Recreate the card with the official Rufus release; try another preparation reader.
- Update SteamOS and firmware, then test the card in another computer.
- Look for
EFI SD/MMC,UEFI: SDor the card’s device name. Do not choose the internal NVMe entry simply because it is first.
Rotated display or black-looking setup screen
Portrait orientation during setup is expected. Install the APU/display driver and reboot. If the screen remains unusable, connect an external display or keyboard temporarily and verify the correct model package.
No Wi-Fi
Install the correct LCD or OLED Wi-Fi driver, use USB-C Ethernet temporarily, then run Windows Update. Do not substitute LCD files for OLED files.

No audio
Verify the APU driver, install every model-specific audio INF, use Show more options in Windows 11 when necessary, reboot and check Device Manager.
Bluetooth does not work
Install the matching Bluetooth driver and update SteamOS/firmware first, particularly on OLED. Recheck Valve’s current model-specific prerequisite because it can change.
The card becomes slow, read-only or corrupt
Likely causes include counterfeit or low-quality media, exhausted flash endurance, sudden removal, power loss, heavy paging or too little free space. Back up what you can and replace the card; repeatedly repairing failing flash is not a durable fix.
Windows updates break booting or performance
Keep SteamOS recovery media available, create a Windows restore point once the installation is stable, and never remove the card during updates. If the filesystem or boot files are damaged, recreating the card is often safer than repeated repairs. Advanced boot-file repair with bcdboot is documented by Microsoft at this troubleshooting page; using it against the wrong partition can worsen the problem.

Windows will not activate
The Deck does not automatically provide a Windows license. Activation depends on a valid license and matching edition; installation, temporary unactivated use and legal activation are separate matters.
SteamOS no longer boots
Remove the Windows card and try the internal SteamOS entry first. If SteamOS itself was altered, use Valve’s recovery instructions at SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting and the official recovery image at steamos/download.
Is microSD the right Windows storage?

An external SSD avoids many microSD bottlenecks but needs a USB-C cable or dock. A dock with power delivery, Ethernet and USB-A is useful during setup; see Valve’s dock page at steamdeck.com/en/dock. Cloud or remote Windows can suit desktop applications when local gaming is unnecessary, provided the network is reliable.
