How to Build a 24/7 Bollywood Hits YouTube Stream with FFmpeg on Debian

A practical Debian and FFmpeg guide to looping a rights-cleared Bollywood program on YouTube Live, with encoder settings, testing, recovery planning, and an optional cloud alternative.

You can send a repeating Bollywood music program to YouTube Live from a Debian host with FFmpeg, but a single encoder session is not a guaranteed 24/7 broadcast or archive. Set up the stream in YouTube Studio, use YouTube’s ingest and encoding recommendations, test your upload and stream health, and clear every recording and visual for live use before going on air.

Before you build the stream: clear the music and visuals

Do not treat music you can play or upload as music you are entitled to rebroadcast. Obtain the rights needed for every sound recording and visual in the program, including any artwork, video clips, or other material. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the matched content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. YouTube advises creators who have licensed third-party content to ask the relevant owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. A license by itself does not prevent an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Live matching and a later claim on an archived video are separate issues: YouTube says an archived live video may receive a Content ID claim after the stream ends. Plan for both, and settle the rights and any allowlisting arrangements before launch rather than trying to fix a blocked broadcast while it is live.

What you need on Debian

  • A Debian host that can stay connected to the internet for the time you intend to broadcast.
  • FFmpeg installed. Check the local build with ffmpeg -version; the Debian Bookworm manpage is not proof of which version or options your system has. Consult the documentation matching your installed build. The Debian Bookworm ffmpeg(1) manpage is a version-specific reference.
  • A rights-cleared program file or a playlist of compatible files. For the sample below, first create a single, continuous audiovisual program file; playlist inputs can differ in codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layouts, and timestamps, so validate a playlist workflow separately before relying on it.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus the stream server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
  • Sustained upload bandwidth sufficient for the chosen bitrate, with headroom for network variation.

How do I create the YouTube stream and get its key?

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select one you have already configured. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into your encoder configuration. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, or public log. If exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
  3. Choose an ingestion protocol. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted option for sending the feed to Google’s servers. Confirm the exact ingest URL offered for your stream.
  4. Start the encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Do not assume the stream is public or healthy merely because FFmpeg has started.

Which FFmpeg settings should I use?

Use YouTube’s current settings for your selected resolution, frame rate, and ingest codec rather than assuming one bitrate works for every program. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video ingest; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds, and it says not to exceed four seconds. For one concrete reference point, YouTube’s table recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. That is a platform recommendation for that setting, not a universal bitrate. Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table for the mode you actually plan to send.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Match the output to the source and your sustainable upload. A higher resolution or frame rate can require more bitrate; an unstable connection can make even a nominally suitable bitrate fail. YouTube recommends a speed test, a test stream with representative movement and audio, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Do those checks before scheduling a long run.

How do I send a program file to YouTube with FFmpeg?

This illustrative template sends one pre-produced audiovisual file repeatedly. It has not been run or tested against your installed FFmpeg build, media, or current YouTube settings. Check available encoders with ffmpeg -encoders, verify the source, and adapt the bitrate, frame size, frame rate, and audio settings to YouTube’s current recommendations and your source. The example uses H.264 at 1080p30 and 10 Mbps, with AAC audio and a two-second keyframe interval.

export YT_URL='rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_SERVER/YOUR_PATH'

  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "${YT_URL}/${YT_KEY}"

Replace the example ingest server and path with the exact URL YouTube provides; the placeholder format above may not match every displayed server URL, so assemble the destination according to the URL and key fields YouTube gives you. Do not paste a real key into a shared or publicly readable shell history. Environment variables avoid putting the literal key in the command text, but they are not a complete secret-management system; restrict access to the account and host, and avoid logging the resolved destination.

  • -re reads a file at approximately its intended playback rate rather than as fast as the host can process it.
  • -stream_loop -1 requests repeated input playback. Check the behavior with your installed FFmpeg and source file before leaving it unattended.
  • -map selects the first video and first audio stream. The template expects both; it will need adjustment for a silent source, multiple audio tracks, or unusual media.
  • The scale and pad filter fits the picture inside a 1920×1080 frame without stretching it. Change this if you are not targeting 1080p or need a different presentation.
  • -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 correspond to a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps, or two seconds. The stated YouTube ceiling is four seconds; make sure the actual encoded output matches the selected frame rate and interval.
  • The template re-encodes video and audio. Confirm that libx264 is available in your build, and check CPU capacity and output health under load. The FFmpeg project’s license and legal considerations explain project licensing and compilation/distribution issues; they do not settle the legal status of your particular broadcast.

Can one YouTube live stream run all day?

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee automatic archiving of a 24-hour session, and it does not establish that a particular FFmpeg process or connection will run without interruption. If an archive matters, plan segments under 12 hours and verify the current YouTube behavior and limits before relying on it. A segmented plan also requires an operator or automation capable of starting the next session and checking that it is live.

For a continuous channel, plan for both encoder failure and platform disconnection. Keep someone responsible for monitoring the Live Control Room, set up host-level monitoring for FFmpeg exit or loss of network connectivity, and document how to restart the process and re-establish the YouTube session. Do not assume a process loop alone reconnects YouTube correctly: validate reconnection and timestamp behavior on your specific build and stream setup.

Test and troubleshoot before leaving it unattended

  • FFmpeg exits immediately: check the input path, whether the file has audio and video streams as mapped, encoder availability, and the local FFmpeg error output. Compare flags with documentation for the installed build.
  • YouTube receives no picture or sound: check the preview, selected stream key and server URL, stream mappings, output format, and whether the source actually contains the expected streams.
  • Stream health reports instability: run a sustained upload test, lower the output bitrate or resolution if necessary, and test again with representative audio and motion. Ensure the connection has practical headroom above the target stream bitrate.
  • The picture is stretched, cropped, or has bars: inspect the source dimensions and adjust the scale/pad filter for the intended frame. Avoid forcing a shape that distorts the source.
  • Playback stops at the end or fails to loop cleanly: test the loop with the exact FFmpeg build and file before broadcast. For a playlist, validate every input’s codecs and timestamps and how the chosen input design handles transitions; do not assume one loop flag makes mixed media seamless.
  • YouTube interrupts the broadcast for a music match: resolve the rights issue with the relevant rightsholder and arrange channel allowlisting where applicable. Restarting the encoder without resolving the match may not solve the underlying issue.
  • The broadcast runs but no reliable archive appears: distinguish the documented automatic archive behavior for streams under 12 hours from longer sessions, and check the current Live Control Room and YouTube help guidance.
