Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To build a 24/7 nature-sounds stream with FFmpeg, create a concat-demuxer playlist from compatible video files, encode the sequence in real time, and send it to YouTube Live using your stream key. This can loop a prepared set of clips, but concat does not repair mismatched files or guarantee seamless joins: validate the inputs, test the stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
What FFmpeg concat does—and what it does not
The concat demuxer reads a text file that lists media files and presents their packets in sequence. It adjusts timestamps so the first input begins at zero and later inputs follow it. Because this is packet-level joining, the inputs need compatible stream layouts, codecs, and time bases; FFmpeg cautions that “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
It is not a universal seamless-loop tool. A wrong stored duration, an incomplete file, or differences in stream properties can cause timestamp gaps or other problems at transitions. The demuxer does not normalize audio, resize video, or make incompatible clips match. If your clips need conversion or other processing, use FFmpeg’s concat filter and re-encode instead; the FFmpeg FAQ describes that alternative.
Prepare and check your nature clips
Make the files compatible
Before writing the playlist, check that every clip has the same streams and compatible codecs and time bases. For a direct demuxer workflow, keep the video and audio formats consistent across files. If the clips differ in resolution, frame rate, codec, audio layout, or other relevant stream properties, convert them to a common format or use the concat filter to process and re-encode them.

Listen and inspect the joins
Review the start and end of each clip, including audio levels and background noise. The concat demuxer joins packets; it does not crossfade audio or smooth a change in ambience. If you want fades or other transitions, prepare those into the clips or use a filter-based workflow. Check duration accuracy too: FFmpeg may use a file’s stored duration to place subsequent timestamps, and inaccurate duration can affect the next clip.
Create a concat playlist
Save a plain-text file named playlist.ffconcat with the version line first, followed by one file directive per clip. Use paths that exist on the machine running FFmpeg:

Get the ingest details
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain its ingest server address and stream key from the stream’s encoder settings. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, or example. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS as ingestion protocols and recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. See YouTube’s encoder settings.

Use a starting command, then match it to your inputs
This illustrative command assumes compatible playlist inputs, an available FFmpeg build with the listed encoder, and a YouTube RTMP(S) ingest address and key. Replace the placeholder destination with the exact ingest URL and key supplied by YouTube; it is not a tested, guaranteed one-size-fits-all configuration.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
-g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
-re paces file input in real time. The command shows an example looping arrangement; option placement and loop behavior can depend on the installed FFmpeg build, so check its documentation and test the actual build. -f concat selects the concat demuxer, and -safe 0 relaxes its path restriction. The video options choose H.264 encoding; the audio options choose AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. The destination is a placeholder, not a literal YouTube URL.

Match bitrate, frame rate, and keyframes to the stream
YouTube’s current encoder settings list H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. In the example, -g 60 gives a 60-frame GOP, which corresponds to two seconds only when the encoded video runs at 30 frames per second. Set the GOP to match your actual frame rate and the two-second recommendation.
The example’s 10 Mbps video bitrate is YouTube’s listed recommendation for H.264 at 1080p30, not a universal setting. YouTube’s current encoder settings page also gives recommendations for other resolutions and frame rates. Choose the setting for your actual output, and ensure the computer can encode it and the available upload connection can sustain it. A bitrate that is too high for the connection can cause interruptions; one that does not match your output may be inappropriate. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings before configuring a different resolution or frame rate.

Choose an ingestion protocol
Use RTMP or RTMPS when your encoder supports it and a continuous-ingestion workflow suits your setup. YouTube also supports HLS for supported use cases; HLS sends video in segments rather than as a continuous RTMP stream, so YouTube says it has higher latency. Choose based on encoder support, codec or HDR requirements, and how much latency your use case can tolerate. See YouTube’s live streaming protocol guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test before leaving the stream running
- Start with a representative test. Use clips with audio and movement similar to the intended stream. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check the incoming picture and sound. Confirm that the stream reaches the intended YouTube event, that video and audio are present, and that clip transitions do not produce silence, jumps, or freezes.
- Watch stream health. Check YouTube Studio’s stream-health feedback while the test is running, and resolve any warnings before relying on the setup continuously.
- Confirm the loop and recovery plan. Let the playlist run through a full cycle if practical, and check what happens after a network interruption or FFmpeg exit. A 24/7 stream depends on the encoder process, host machine, storage, power, and network remaining available; the command alone does not restart a stopped process.
YouTube recommends choosing settings that can be sustained reliably on the available connection and checking connection speed. Its guidance is in live encoder settings.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg rejects the concat input or a transition fails: inspect the files for differing stream layouts, codecs, or time bases. Convert the inputs to compatible formats, or switch to the concat filter when re-encoding is needed.
- Audio or picture jumps at a clip boundary: review the source files and their durations. Incorrect stored duration can shift later timestamps; the demuxer does not create crossfades or repair bad edits.
- YouTube reports unstable stream health: verify that the chosen bitrate and output settings are sustainable on the upload connection. Test with the intended audio and video, reduce the output demand if needed, and monitor stream health again.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: confirm that the event is ready to receive an encoder, the ingest address and stream key are copied correctly, and the key has not been exposed or replaced. Keep the full destination private.
- The stream stops after FFmpeg or the computer exits: the local command does not provide process supervision or keep the host powered. Check the encoder process, host power, network, and storage; arrange an independent restart or hosting plan if uninterrupted operation is required.
Keep the stream eligible and rights-safe
Only use nature footage and audio you own or are licensed to stream on YouTube. A looped format does not grant permission to rebroadcast recordings, music, or footage, and a stream key does not bypass YouTube’s policies. Review the rights for every clip, including ambient recordings captured by someone else, and check YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies if you intend to monetize. Repeated or minimally changed material may raise separate monetization-policy questions; streaming continuously is not itself a guarantee of monetization.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a computer, OBS, or a home internet connection to stay on, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded material from the cloud and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed.
