You can build a continuous YouTube lofi stream by preparing compatible media, listing tracks in an FFmpeg concat manifest, and sending the resulting audio and video to YouTube Live. The concat demuxer is not a format converter: normalize files that differ, test transitions locally, and plan how you will monitor and recover the encoder before relying on it around the clock.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to start a live stream, plus access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- An installed FFmpeg build and media files that the machine running FFmpeg can read.
- A playlist of tracks and a visual: a static image, a looping video, or prepared video segments.
- A reliable machine and network connection for a local deployment, or hosted compute you administer. There is no universal server size established for this workload; requirements depend on resolution, frame rate, inputs, and whether FFmpeg encodes or copies streams.
Use music and visuals you have the right to broadcast. A technically valid stream does not establish permission to use copyrighted recordings or artwork, and YouTube’s policies and channel monetization review are separate from whether an encoder can connect.
Choose the right FFmpeg concatenation method

Prepare and normalize your lofi media
Inventory tracks and visuals
Decide whether each playlist item is audio-only or contains video. For an audio-first stream, a static image or separate looping visual can provide the video while the playlist provides audio. The mapping and filtering depend on the formats involved, so do not assume one universal command will suit every library.

Make demuxer inputs compatible
For demuxer concatenation, listed files need the same streams and compatible properties, including codecs and time bases. If tracks have different encodings or stream layouts, create consistent intermediate files first or use a filter-and-re-encode workflow. Check the actual streams rather than relying on filenames or extensions.
Check durations and transitions
The demuxer uses each file’s duration to position the next one. Incorrect duration metadata can cause gaps, overlap, or other transition artifacts; the concat script’s duration directive can override a file’s stored duration when necessary. Validate the audible transition and timeline rather than presuming metadata is correct. See FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Create the concat playlist manifest
Make a plain-text script, for example lofi.ffconcat, with one file directive per item in order:

file '/media/track-003.mp3'Use paths that the FFmpeg process can read. Filenames containing quotes, backslashes, or other special characters require correct escaping; also check the installed FFmpeg documentation for concat script syntax and safe-path behavior. A manifest only describes the sequence—it does not repair incompatible media or automatically provide a video stream.

Validate the playlist before connecting YouTube
- Run a local decode or short test output using the manifest and your intended visual arrangement.
- Confirm every item opens, audio remains present at transitions, and the stream has the intended audio and video streams.
- Listen for gaps or abrupt cuts and check that timestamps progress as expected; correct duration metadata or normalize troublesome files.
- Test a representative section with both the quiet passages and the busiest audio and visual motion you expect to broadcast.
Resolve these issues locally before troubleshooting YouTube ingest: a successful connection cannot fix a broken playlist or missing stream mapping.
Configure YouTube Live and the FFmpeg output
Get the ingest URL and protect the key
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to reach Live Control Room, then create or select the live stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into your encoder configuration.
- Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, source control, and logs. YouTube describes it as functioning like the stream’s password and address; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder. See YouTube Help: create and manage live streams.
Choose encoder settings for your actual output
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Select the bitrate from YouTube’s table for your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one number as universal; supported frame rates go up to 60 fps. There is no safe universal FFmpeg command for arbitrary lofi libraries. Output options depend on whether your inputs already match, whether you are using a separate visual input, and which streams you map or encode. Specify those assumptions before building a command, use the ingest URL and key without exposing them, and test the exact configuration with your installed FFmpeg build.

YouTube advises testing before starting, with audio and video movement similar to the real broadcast, then checking stream health and messages while live. Its guidance recommends leaving 20% headroom in the available upload-bandwidth calculation. Ensure capacity for the selected output bitrate and any other simultaneous uploads or backup stream; the bandwidth number is not a guarantee against network disruption. Plan for 24/7 operation and recovery
A playlist and encoder command do not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. Continuous operation also depends on the host, storage, network path, process supervision, and the operator’s recovery plan. The appropriate compute arrangement depends on output settings and processing choices; official FFmpeg and YouTube guidance does not establish a universal server specification or provider ranking.
- Keep the media library available to the running process, including after restarts, and confirm mounted or network storage will reconnect as expected.
- Capture FFmpeg logs and arrange an alert if the process exits or output stops progressing.
- Decide who or what will restart the encoder and how it will reconnect to YouTube; test that recovery path instead of assuming it works.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream health and incoming status while live, especially after changing the playlist, settings, host, or network.
- For a local machine, account for power and connectivity interruptions. For hosted compute, assess cost, location, access to media, network path, monitoring, and recovery support; no single hosting plan is established as sufficient for every stream.
Common FFmpeg and YouTube problems

Its costs and reliability depend on the machine, power, network, storage, and monitoring you provide; the right local or hosted setup cannot be inferred without your output settings and operating requirements.
