Build around the fighters you want to use, then choose bench characters whose Z Abilities support those fighters’ Tags. Check the formation indicators and Ability Bonus to confirm what applies, and account for Element matchups, Leader rules and Supporters where your mode allows them. There is no universal “best” roster: your collection, battle mode and the ability text on your characters determine the right team.
Start with the fighters you want to take into battle
Choose your preferred battle members first, then inspect each character’s Tags, Element and ability text in-game. A regular party can hold up to six characters, so the other slots can support the fighters you actually deploy. “Best” depends on who you own and the mode you are playing; the available official guidance does not establish a single current best roster.
Build around a shared Tag and applicable Z Abilities
A shared Tag is a practical starting point because it makes it easier to find bench characters whose Z Abilities apply to your battle members. For example, the Dragon Ball Legends Management Team’s beginner guide demonstrates forming a Saiyan party and choosing Z Abilities that target Saiyans. Check the character’s ability text rather than assuming that a shared Tag makes every ability compatible. Read the beginner guidance.
During party formation, look at the indicators on character icons: they show whether abilities are applying, and the displayed count indicates how many Z or Zenkai Abilities affect that character. Use this check to spot a bench member who looks like a fit but is not actually supporting the intended fighter.
#1 Best Overall
Choose bench characters for the effects they provide
Characters who are not selected for battle can still contribute applicable Z Abilities. Use the remaining party slots to improve coverage for your deployed fighters, not simply to fill the roster with other strong characters. The in-game Ability Bonus helps review the combined effects of Z Abilities, Zenkai Abilities and equipment.
- Check which Tag or other conditions each ability names.
- Confirm the formation indicator shows the effect applying to the intended fighter.
- Review Ability Bonus to see the combined contribution of applicable abilities and equipment.
These systems have distinct rules, so a strong overall Ability Bonus does not by itself prove that a particular ability benefits the fighter you care about. Check the ability’s target and conditions.

Use the Leader slot only when it helps your build
In regular modes and Super Space-Time Rush, a Leader slot is available. When the Leader participates in battle, they receive other party members’ Z Ability effects, and the rest of the party receives the Leader’s Z Ability effects. This can help bridge a Tag mismatch for Z Abilities, making it useful when a favorite fighter does not fit the rest of the party’s usual Tag core.
The Leader interaction applies to Z Abilities; do not assume it extends Zenkai, Unique or ULTRA Abilities. The game Help page also says Co-op, Co-op Raid, Tournament of Power and Guild Battle parties do not have a Leader slot. Check the mode and the ability type before building around the Leader effect. See Dragon Ball Legends Help.

Cover Element matchups as well as Tag synergy
A team can have cohesive Tag support and still be exposed to unfavorable Element matchups. When comparing plausible builds, look at both ability coverage and whether the selected fighters give you options against threats your main fighter may struggle with.
An official historical party example discusses using a different Element to cover for a vulnerable fighter, but its character recommendations date to 2021. Treat it as an illustration of the principle, not a current lineup to copy. Read the historical strategy example.

Keep Supporters separate from ordinary bench members
Supporters are a separate system, not simply another name for party members who sit out a battle. In its May 13, 2026 notice, the Dragon Ball Legends Management Team describes a Supporter deck of six, with one Supporter deployed during battle. Supporters have Support Abilities and Support Z Abilities, which follow their own rules. Check whether Supporters are available in your mode and review their ability text separately from ordinary party effects. Read the Supporters notice.

| What to compare | What to check |
|---|---|
| Ability coverage | Which deployed fighters receive useful Z or Zenkai effects, and whether each ability’s target conditions are met. |
| Leader value | Whether the Leader’s Z Ability meaningfully supports the party, and whether your mode has a Leader slot. |
| Element coverage | Whether your selected fighters give you options for unfavorable matchups. |
| Equipment and Supporters | Applicable equipment effects and any Supporter abilities relevant to the mode. |
Finish by checking the formation indicators and Ability Bonus in-game. Dragon Ball Legends also offers Recommended Allies and Recommended Equipment based on usage by high-Battle-Rank players when usage data is available. Treat those features as starting points for inspection, not proof that a recommendation fits your characters or mode. Ability text and available characters change, so the in-game details are the best place to verify a current build.
