How to Build a GStreamer YouTube Loop Stream on Raspberry Pi 5

A practical build plan for looping prerecorded video from a Raspberry Pi 5 to YouTube Live with GStreamer, including EOS handling, ingest settings and validation.

You can build a Raspberry Pi 5 setup that repeatedly plays a local video into a YouTube Live stream with GStreamer, but the loop and the YouTube output are separate jobs. A playback application must handle end-of-stream (EOS) and restart the media while an outgoing pipeline encodes, muxes and sends the stream. The official Raspberry Pi example is for camera streaming, not a tested one-command prerecorded-file loop, so treat the design below as a build plan and validate it with a private or unlisted stream before relying on it.

How the stream is put together

The conceptual media path is:

  1. Read the file: open the local video and demux its supported audio and video tracks.
  2. Prepare the tracks: decode them, then convert or scale as needed for the output you choose.
  3. Encode for YouTube: use H.264 video for the straightforward Pi-oriented route described here; encode audio as AAC if the file has audio.
  4. Package the output: mux the encoded streams into FLV.
  5. Send it to YouTube: use GStreamer’s rtmpsink with the YouTube ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room.
  6. Repeat playback: have an application catch the playback EOS event and restart the media without unnecessarily tearing down the outgoing stream.

This is an architectural outline, not a verified, copy-and-paste command. GStreamer documents rtmpsink as sending RTMP data through librtmp; its sink expects FLV video. Its example uses encoding, flvmux and rtmpsink. Check that the RTMP plugin is installed locally; rtmpsink is part of the Bad Plug-ins package. See the GStreamer rtmpsink documentation.

Choose a loop mechanism

GStreamer does not make a file loop merely by sending it to an RTMP sink. The player must detect that playback ended and start it again. The documented options below involve an application or playback API; the cited documentation does not establish a bare gst-launch-1.0 loop flag for playbin.

Approach What it does Version and recovery considerations What is not established
Application using playbin Monitor the GStreamer bus for EOS, then reset playback to READY or NULL and start the URI again. The documented EOS and restart approach gives the application control to handle playback errors as well as repeats. The documentation does not verify a gapless transition or a YouTube RTMPS pipeline integration. Keep the outgoing pipeline alive where your design permits and test the repeat transition.
Application using GstPlay track-loop mode Set GST_PLAY_LOOP_TRACK to repeat the current track. The option is documented as available since GStreamer 1.28; check the installed version and API before choosing it. The cited documentation does not benchmark transition gaps or verify this mode with YouTube output.

GStreamer documents the playbin EOS and restart behavior and the GstPlay track-loop option. Resetting the whole output pipeline at every repeat risks interrupting ingest; preserving a persistent encoding, mux and RTMPS path while restarting playback is an implementation goal, not a guarantee. Test the actual EOS transition using an unlisted or private broadcast before scheduling a public stream.

Set YouTube ingest parameters

YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. For a simple GStreamer build, H.264 is the practical documented route here; these recommendations do not establish what resolution or frame rate a Pi 5 can encode successfully for your particular file and pipeline.

Setting YouTube guidance
Protocol RTMPS recommended; obtain the ingest details in YouTube Live Control Room.
Video codec H.264, H.265 or AV1 are supported; H.264 is the route used in the Pi example guidance discussed below.
Rate control CBR.
Frame rate and keyframes Up to 60 fps. Use a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
Stereo audio AAC or MP3; YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps.
5.1 audio YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only with AAC.

YouTube’s published H.264 bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate:

Output H.264 bitrate guidance
720p30 3 Mbps recommended
720p60 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended
1080p30 5 Mbps recommended
1080p60 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not Pi 5 performance guarantees. Choose an output that your sustained upload connection and encoder can maintain rather than starting with the highest available resolution. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions for its current guidance.

Apply Raspberry Pi 5-specific guidance carefully

Raspberry Pi’s official GStreamer streaming examples concern camera capture. In that context, its Pi 5 example substitutes x264enc speed-preset=1 threads=1 for the earlier-device v4l2h264enc example. That is a useful platform-specific clue, not a benchmark, a universal encoder optimum, or proof of a particular file-transcoding resolution or frame rate.

Raspberry Pi also says to use avdec_h264 instead of v4l2h264dec in a Pi 5 playback pipeline. This informs decoder selection when applicable; it does not establish compatibility for every input file. Confirm that GStreamer has the demuxers, decoders, converters, encoders and RTMP sink your media and pipeline require.

Build and validate before going public

  1. Inspect the file and installed elements. Confirm the source’s codecs, tracks, resolution, frame rate and audio format. Check locally that the needed GStreamer elements—including rtmpsink—are available.
  2. Pick a conservative output. Match the resolution and frame rate to the media, Pi’s measured ability to encode it, and stable upload capacity. Use YouTube’s bitrate table as ingest guidance, not a promise that the Pi will sustain the setting.
  3. Assemble separate media branches. Decode and prepare video and, if present, audio; encode them; mux the streams as FLV; then connect the muxed output to rtmpsink. A file without audio does not need an audio branch, but the exact pipeline depends on the file and installed plugins.
  4. Implement EOS handling. Use an application to restart playback or a compatible GstPlay loop mode. Keep playback restart distinct from the persistent outgoing stream where possible, and handle errors as well as EOS.
  5. Configure YouTube privately first. Create the live stream in YouTube Live Control Room, use its ingest URL and stream key, and start with a private or unlisted test. Never expose the key in public scripts, examples, logs or screenshots.
  6. Test representative content. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion, checking upload speed, and monitoring stream health during the event. Watch across a file boundary to confirm the loop does not interrupt the outgoing connection.
  7. Promote only after validation. Check the YouTube preview and stream health, then change visibility or schedule the public broadcast. Continue monitoring the stream and the Pi during unattended operation.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

A successful RTMPS connection only means the encoder is sending data; it does not establish that you have permission to broadcast the media or that a channel qualifies for monetization. Use recordings you own or are licensed to stream, including music, game footage and any third-party audio. Review YouTube’s applicable copyright rules and reused-content requirements for your channel before relying on a prerecorded loop for public or monetized use. Repeating a file is a technical playback behavior, not a rights clearance or monetization strategy.

Troubleshoot likely failure points

  • rtmpsink is missing: the RTMP element may not be installed. Verify the GStreamer Bad Plug-ins package and inspect element availability before debugging the rest of the pipeline.
  • YouTube does not accept the stream: check the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, ensure the key is private and current, and confirm that the muxed output is FLV and the transport settings match the selected ingest.
  • Playback starts but the stream stops at the end: EOS handling is missing or is not restarting playback. Add application-level EOS handling or use a supported GstPlay loop option; verify the installed GStreamer version if using the 1.28 track-loop feature.
  • The live connection drops at each repeat: the implementation may be restarting the whole output pipeline rather than only playback. Separate the player restart from the outgoing pipeline where feasible, then test the boundary; uninterrupted behavior is not guaranteed by the cited API descriptions.
  • Video or audio will not negotiate: the source format may not have the required demuxer, decoder, converter or encoder path, or the audio branch may not match the file. Inspect the actual tracks and installed plugins rather than assuming all files can use one pipeline.
  • Picture stutters or stream health degrades: lower the output resolution, frame rate or bitrate and retest. Check sustained upload capacity and Pi encoding load; the camera example does not provide performance measurements for file transcoding.
  • Audio is absent or out of sync: verify that the file has an audio track and that it is decoded, encoded and muxed into FLV. Test a representative section before relying on a long loop.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos live without keeping a Pi or home connection running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not broadcast from a camera.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs from the cloud.
  • Every slot has one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is included if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free, with no card required; it is one free day per account.

Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
