Build a recognizable LEGO PlayStation-inspired display by choosing its footprint first, making a broad, low body with interlocked layers, and adding only a few defining details. Treat it as a custom, fan-made design: the dimensions and techniques below are starting points, not a tested parts list or measured build plan.
Choose the scale and footprint
Decide whether you want to evoke the original PlayStation’s overall silhouette or make a looser, compact tribute. Use a reference image to identify the proportions and features you want to keep, then mark out the intended footprint before building. Make sure it fits the shelf where you plan to display it.
A useful size reference is LEGO’s licensed set 72306, announced in 2026: its official model is over 6 cm high, 26 cm wide, and 19 cm deep. Those are the dimensions of that set, not requirements for a custom model. LEGO’s product page identifies it as a display model of the original PlayStation console and controller.
Build a low, connected body
Start with a flat base and a simple rectangular shell. Keep the main layers broad and tied into one another instead of relying on a decorative top layer to hold the model together. LEGO’s building-technique guide explains the principle: “By LOCKING two or more bricks together with one that lies across them on top or underneath, you create an assembly that can hold more weight and stay connected better.” Read LEGO’s building-technique guide.

As the shell grows, check that the layers remain aligned and that details do not make the model lopsided. This is general construction guidance; no stability testing has been published for a custom console design.
Shape the console silhouette
Once the body is secure, use slopes or sideways-facing elements to suggest the console’s distinctive curved edge, inset areas, or stepped profile. A simple vertical stack may give you a sturdy block, but changing the orientation of elements can help create shapes that studs-up building alone cannot. LEGO’s guide describes sideways building as a way to build out from studs or holes in different orientations.

Add a few recognizable details
Choose a small number of high-contrast features rather than covering the shell in tiny decorations. Depending on the scale, contrasting parts can suggest the disc area, buttons, controller port, and vents. LEGO’s building guide recommends selecting details that help communicate what a model represents; the exact elements available through its catalog can vary.
For a custom project, LEGO says its Pick a Brick service lets builders buy individual bricks and special elements. Choose the palette and shapes you need first, then check the current catalog for your region.

Use the official set as a reference, not a blueprint
LEGO announced set 72306 in September 2026 as an 18+ model with 1,911 pieces. Its features include functional Open and Power buttons, a plug-in controller, and concealed buildable dioramas inspired by Gran Turismo and Ape Escape. The announcement listed prices of £139.99, €159.99, and $179.99, with LEGO Insiders Early Access beginning October 1, 2026 and wider availability from October 4, 2026. The licensed set can help you judge proportions and see how LEGO approached features, but a custom display can use a different scale, construction, and detail level. LEGO’s official instruction listing is available at its building-instructions page.

Keep the project clearly fan-made
Describe or label a custom model as PlayStation-inspired rather than implying it is an official LEGO or Sony product. LEGO’s personal-project help page says it cannot allow LEGO brand names, logos, trademarks, instructions, or pieces to be used for commercial purposes such as marketing, promotional campaigns, or PR. It points to its Fair Play policy and recommends consulting a qualified IP lawyer if you are unsure; this is not a complete statement of Sony’s rights or the rules in every jurisdiction.
