What makes a loadout good for a course?
A loadout consists of one driver, one kart, and one glider. The course’s item shelves determine how well each owned item performs there, so make the choice course by course rather than picking the items with the highest levels in your collection. Nintendo’s Mario Kart Tour game page describes the game’s drivers, karts, and gliders; the historical scoring mechanics are detailed in the Mario Kart Tour race points system reference.
- Identify the target course and check its item tier for drivers, karts, and gliders.
- Choose an owned top-tier item in each category where possible.
- If you lack a top-tier option, compare the middle-tier items before considering bottom-tier ones.
- For items at the same course tier, compare level and base points, then weigh the category-specific ability and the way you prefer to score.
This is a scoring-oriented rule of thumb, not a guarantee of a particular result. Handling preference or a desired item effect can justify a different choice.
How to choose each slot
Driver: prioritize course tier and item slots
Driver course tier determines whether the driver can receive one, two, or three items on that course. A top-tier driver can receive three; when all three match, a Frenzy may trigger. If several of your drivers share the same course tier, compare their levels and base points, and consider which special item best suits your approach. Driver choice contributes to scoring, but a higher driver level does not by itself cancel a course-tier difference.

Kart: consider the action-point multiplier
Kart course tier and level affect action points. The historical mechanics reference documents course-tier multipliers of ×2 for top tier, ×1.5 for middle tier, and ×1 for bottom tier, before the applicable level multiplier. Kart special skills boost particular actions, such as mini-turbos or jump boosts. When two karts cover the course equally, a useful skill for the actions you tend to perform can help distinguish them.
Glider: support combos
Glider course tier affects combo points, while course tier and level affect how long you can keep a combo going before it breaks. A higher-tier glider is especially useful on a course where you can chain frequent actions. When choosing between gliders at the same tier, consider their levels and the item or combo effect that fits your scoring style.

How the loadout connects to your score
A race score combines the selected items’ base points, points earned from actions and combos during the race, and points for finishing position. Actions include jumps, item hits, and other in-game events. Chaining actions adds combo points; the glider’s course tier affects combo value and duration, while kart course tier and level affect the action multiplier. - Whether the choice fits your scoring goal and your ability to keep actions chained.
This framework helps explain the trade-offs; it is not a tested score prediction for an individual account.
What item levels and points can—and cannot—tell you
In the historical system, race experience and point-boost tickets raised an item’s base points, while points-cap tickets raised its maximum. For a course-specific comparison, the relevant values are the level and base points of the items in that account, not rarity alone. Spending a scarce upgrade resource solely because an item is rare may not improve useful course coverage.
