The measurements below are starting points—not rules that fit every body, screen, or room. They apply most directly to seated PC gaming; for a console or couch setup, use the same principles of support, comfortable viewing, and changing position.
How do I make my gaming setup more comfortable?
Work from the player outward. A monitor cannot compensate for a chair that leaves your feet unsupported, and a well-fitted chair will not help if you have to lean or twist to see the screen. Make one adjustment at a time, then check whether you can relax into the setup without straining to see or reach.
- Fit the chair and desk to your body. Sit back so the chair supports your back. Adjust the seat height for a comfortable working position, and make sure your feet are supported.
- Center and position the screen. Put your main display in front of you and adjust its height and distance so you can view it comfortably without leaning or turning your head.
- Bring controls within easy reach. Position your keyboard and mouse so you do not need to reach, shrug, twist, or sharply bend your wrists.
- Reduce glare. Check the screen’s position relative to windows and lights, then adjust brightness and contrast for comfortable viewing.
- Change position during long sessions. Use natural pauses between matches or rounds to move and avoid staying in one position for too long.
How should I set up my desk and chair?
Sit back against the chair so it can support your back, then check your feet and legs. Your feet should rest on the floor or a footrest, and your thighs should have room under the desk. If you raise the chair to make your arms more comfortable at the desk, recheck foot support; a footrest can help if your feet no longer reach the floor.
Fit and adjustability matter more than a chair’s gaming label. OSHA describes an appropriately adjusted, well-designed chair as essential to a safe and productive computer workstation. That guidance does not establish that a gaming-branded chair is better than an office chair, or that one model suits everyone.

How high should my monitor be?
Start with the display centered directly in front of you, with its top at or slightly below eye level. OSHA’s workstation guidance generally places the center of the monitor 15–20 degrees below horizontal eye level; HSE describes the top of the screen as level with the eyes. Treat these as practical starting points rather than a single required angle. Screen size, vision needs, viewing angle, and posture all affect what feels comfortable.
How far away should I sit from my monitor?
Place the screen far enough away that you can read it without leaning forward. The guidance offers slightly different reference ranges: OSHA gives a generally preferred viewing distance of 20–40 inches (50–100 cm), while the NIH Office of Research Services suggests about 20–26 inches—roughly arm’s length. Neither range is a universal prescription. Adjust for your display, text size, vision, and comfortable posture.

Where should I put my keyboard and mouse?
Keep frequently used controls close and in front of you so you can reach them without twisting, shrugging, or bending your wrists sharply. HSE’s standard workstation illustration places the keyboard just below elbow height and the mouse in line with the elbow. Use that as a starting position, then adjust to avoid awkward wrist angles and raised shoulders. These principles also apply when adapting controls for console play; they do not require a special gaming peripheral, and the cited guidance does not identify one mouse type as best for every gamer.
How can I reduce screen glare?
Where possible, position the monitor perpendicular to a window rather than facing it or sitting with the window directly behind you. Watch for glare from direct lighting as well as windows. Adjust screen brightness and contrast until the display is clear and comfortable to view. These steps address viewing conditions; the cited workstation guidance does not establish that a particular filter or color setting prevents eye disease.

What should I do during long gaming sessions?
Break up prolonged static time with short pauses, movement, and posture changes. A natural transition—such as the end of a round, match, or queue—is a practical time to stand or shift position. OSHA says prolonged static computer work can fatigue neck and shoulder muscles and that short rest breaks may be appropriate for prolonged static or repetitive tasks. It does not set a universal break interval for gaming.
Cleveland Clinic’s gaming guide suggests the 20-20-20 visual break: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This is that guide’s suggestion for a visual pause, not a guarantee of an outcome or a replacement for moving and changing position.

What can I adjust if my back, neck, wrists, or eyes feel uncomfortable?
Check the part of the setup that could be making you lean, turn, reach, shrug, or hold one position. Recheck chair and foot support, whether the screen is centered and readable without leaning, whether the controls are within easy reach, and whether lighting creates glare. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether the adjustment feels more comfortable.
A setup adjustment cannot diagnose the cause of a symptom or guarantee that it will resolve. If pain, numbness, or vision symptoms persist, seek appropriate professional guidance.
