For a trip, download titles in a streaming or purchase app and test playback before you leave. For a lasting personal library, organize compatible media files on storage you control and back them up. Those are different approaches: an app download usually stays tied to its service, while a media server organizes files but does not provide the right to obtain or copy them.
Choose the kind of offline library you need

The practical trade-off is convenience versus control. App downloads are generally the least setup, but remain governed by platform rules. Local files give you more control over organization and backups, but require storage, compatible playback, and attention to the rights attached to the source material.
Download titles in an app for a trip
Check the actual title and device before relying on an app download: support can differ between phones, computers, TVs, services, and individual titles.
Apple TV app purchases
Apple says digital media bought from Apple can be downloaded on iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Windows PC through the Apple TV app. Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, smart TVs, and other streaming devices can stream purchased movies and shows in the app but cannot download them there. These instructions concern purchased content and should not be generalized to every subscription, title, country, or future app version. See Apple’s purchased-content download instructions.

Apple’s terms say purchased content will “generally” remain available to download, redownload, or access, but content can become unavailable if it is removed from the service—for example, if Apple loses the provider’s rights. Apple encourages users to download purchased content to a device they possess and back it up. Its terms also note that some content may not be downloadable, some downloads can expire, and tampering with or circumventing security technology is prohibited. Read the Apple Media Services terms for the applicable terms.
Google TV library downloads
Google says videos in a Google TV library can be downloaded to phones and tablets for offline playback. A download that has not completed is one reason a video may fail to play. Check the Google TV offline-viewing help page for its current instructions; do not assume downloads are supported on every TV device.

Before you leave
- Confirm that the specific title can be downloaded to your device and that the app is available there.
- Download while connected to the internet and wait for the download to finish.
- Open the title and test playback before departure, while you still have a connection to troubleshoot.
- Check any expiry or device restrictions, and make sure you can access the app and account you used to download it.
Organize a local collection with a media server
A self-hosted server such as Jellyfin can catalog and play a personal media collection. It helps organize files; it does not turn a streaming or purchase-app title into a portable video file, nor does its documentation grant permission to make a source copy. Jellyfin describes its role in its quick-start guide.
Use a consistent folder and filename scheme
Separate films from television, and name files consistently so library software can match them with metadata. A simple starting structure is:

- Movies: one folder per film, with the title and release year in the folder and filename.
- TV Shows: one folder per series, then folders by season; include the series, season, and episode number in each episode filename.
For example, a movie might be stored as Movies/Example Film (2022)/Example Film (2022).mkv; a series episode might be TV Shows/Example Series/Season 01/Example Series S01E01.mkv. These are organizational examples, not guarantees that every metadata provider will identify a file perfectly.
Jellyfin documents common video formats such as MP4 and MKV, along with its movie library guidance and TV naming and organization guidance. Its documentation notes limitations with VIDEO_TS and BDMV folder structures, so check supported structures before building a library around them.

Plan storage and a backup
Estimate storage from the files you actually have rather than relying on a universal capacity figure: video sizes vary. Keep an independent backup of files you would not want to lose. An external hard drive is one possible backup destination; Apple likewise recommends regularly backing up downloaded content. A backup protects against drive failure, but it does not change a file’s DRM, license, or legal status.

Owning a disc or buying a digital title does not automatically settle whether you may make a server copy or use it in another application. The answer depends on the source material, applicable terms, copy protection, and the law where you live. A media server’s ability to organize a file is not evidence that obtaining that file was permitted.

For the United States, 37 CFR 201.40 lists specific, purpose-limited exemptions to the circumvention prohibition. The preservation or replacement provision shown there applies to eligible libraries, archives, or museums under conditions including damaged or deteriorating media and restricted access; it is not a general personal disc-ripping exemption.
Canada illustrates why a universal answer is unsafe. Under section 29.22 of the Copyright Act, private-purpose reproduction has conditions including lawful acquisition, private use, not giving away the reproduction, and not circumventing a technological protection measure. Section 29.23 addresses certain recordings of broadcasts for later viewing, imposes conditions, and excludes on-demand services. The Act page was current to 2026-09-21 and last amended 2024-11-07. These are jurisdiction-specific provisions, not a rule for other countries or every copying situation. Check the law where you are, or get qualified advice about a specific case.
