Take Sorcerer to level 12: you get the Hound of Ill Omen at level 6, Shadow Walk at level 11, and the full spell, Metamagic, and feat progression along the way. This is a versatile control-and-survival build, not a proven damage-record setup.
What makes Shadow Magic powerful?
Shadow Magic is an official Sorcerer subclass added in Patch 8. Larian’s April 15, 2025 release announcement called Patch 8 the game’s final major patch and listed 12 new subclasses, including Shadow Magic Sorcerer (Larian Studios’ Patch 8 release notes).
The subclass develops in stages: darkvision and a survival feature at level 1, access to Darkness and its special Sorcery Point-powered action at level 3, the Hound of Ill Omen at level 6, and Shadow Walk at level 11. These features make the class useful for disrupting enemy positioning and protecting a party, while Sorcerer spell progression and Metamagic let you adapt to different encounters. The feature details are listed in the BG3 Wiki’s Shadow Magic reference.
Recommended build at a glance
| Choice | Recommendation | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Class progression | Sorcerer 12 | Keeps the level-6 hound and level-11 Shadow Walk on schedule while continuing spell, Sorcery Point, Metamagic, and feat progression. |
| Ability priorities | Charisma first; Constitution and Dexterity as survival priorities | Charisma supports your spellcasting; Constitution and Dexterity help a conventional caster stay effective under pressure. This is a role-based recommendation, not a tested universal optimum. |
| Combat role | Darkness control, survival, summon, and mobility | Uses the subclass’s distinct tools without assuming it out-damages other builds. |
| Spell selection | Cover damage, control, defense or repositioning, and counterplay | A varied spell kit gives you answers when Darkness is unsuitable or insufficient. |
| Resource plan | Reserve Sorcery Points for the encounter’s highest-value use | Metamagic, special Darkness, and the hound can all compete for the same resource. |
This progression assumes a conventional caster role, party support, and no modded class changes. The available class references establish mechanics, not a tested best-in-slot stat spread, feat order, or spell list.

How to progress from level 1 to 12
Level 1: Start Shadow Magic
Choose the Shadow Magic subclass when you take your first Sorcerer level. The subclass reference lists darkvision out to 24 m (80 ft) and Strength of the Grave, which can let you return to 1 HP instead of becoming downed when you reach 0 HP. These are early tools for seeing in darkness and surviving a lethal hit, not a reason to ignore positioning or healing.
Levels 2–3: Build your spell and resource kit
At level 3, you gain the regular Darkness spell option and the special Eyes of the Dark: Darkness action, which costs 2 Sorcery Points. The regular spell and the subclass action are distinct options; choose between them based on the situation and your available resources. Keep a non-Darkness plan for encounters where obscuring the battlefield would hinder your own party.
Level 4: Choose a role-fitting feat
There is no established universal best feat for this subclass. Choose one that addresses your build’s needs, and keep Charisma progression in view if your feat does not raise it.

Level 5: Expand your encounter answers
Third-level spell options give you room to improve damage or control coverage. Pick spells for the party and difficulty you actually play rather than treating any specific selection as a measured best choice. Maintain a reliable damage option and a control option; add defense or repositioning, and a countermeasure such as Counterspell when available and appropriate to your spell choices.

Level 6: Gain the Hound of Ill Omen
The hound is a bonus-action summon that costs 3 Sorcery Points and recharges on a short rest, according to the subclass reference. Treat it as another tactical actor that can pressure an enemy and affect the encounter, not as guaranteed damage. Because it takes a bonus action and draws on Sorcery Points, consider what else you need to do that turn before summoning it.
Levels 7–10: Keep advancing Sorcerer
Stay in Sorcerer to progress your spells and resources. You take a second feat at level 8 and gain another Metamagic choice at level 10; the Sorcerer progression reference lists the class milestones. Use these choices to fill gaps in your spell coverage and preferred play style rather than chasing an unsupported universal setup.

Level 11: Unlock Shadow Walk
Shadow Walk lets you teleport into shadow and gives the next spell you cast that turn the range benefit of Distant Spell without spending Sorcery Points. That can help you reposition and then reach a target or location that would otherwise be out of range. See the Shadow Walk reference for the feature summary.
Level 12: Finish the single-class progression
Take your final feat and complete Sorcerer 12. Continuing Sorcerer preserves the full class progression and the subclass’s late mobility feature; the class reference lists the level-12 progression.

How to use Darkness without hindering your party
The special Eyes of the Dark: Darkness action costs 2 Sorcery Points. The subclass reference describes its area as heavily obscured, blinding creatures within it and preventing ranged attacks into or out of the cloud (BG3 Wiki: Shadow Magic). That can protect a vulnerable area or disrupt ranged enemies, but the same obstruction can interfere with allies’ attacks and spells that need a clear line of sight.
Rank #4
- Divide ranged attackers: Place the cloud to break up enemy firing lines or obstruct a dangerous group, rather than automatically covering the whole battlefield.
- Protect a vulnerable area: Use the obstruction to make a threatened position harder to target from range.
- Force movement: Consider whether enemies must leave or move around the area to regain useful sight lines.
- Check your allies’ plans: Avoid blocking the targets or routes your party needs for ranged attacks and sight-dependent spells.
- Preserve an alternative: Switch to another damage or control option when the cloud would cost your team more than it disrupts the enemy.
Budget Sorcery Points around the encounter
Sorcery Points have competing uses: the special Darkness action costs 2, the hound costs 3, and Metamagic consumes Sorcery Points as well. The Sorcerer reference describes Quickened Spell as changing an action spell into a bonus-action spell (BG3 Wiki: Sorcerer). It can help when action economy matters, but using it means fewer points available for subclass abilities.
- Identify the encounter’s priority. Decide whether you most need to disrupt ranged enemies, summon the hound, or modify a spell with Metamagic.
- Account for the bonus action. The hound uses a bonus action, and Quickened Spell changes a spell’s action cost; plan around which bonus-action plays you intend to make.
- Spend for a concrete advantage. Use Sorcery Points when the effect is likely to change positioning, protect an ally, or improve a key spell—not just because the resource is available.
- Reassess after the fight. The hound’s short-rest recharge makes it useful to factor into rest planning, but its cost still competes with other Sorcery Point uses during an encounter.
Should you multiclass?
For a straightforward Shadow Magic build, staying Sorcerer through level 12 is the clearest route to the subclass’s level-6 and level-11 features and continued Sorcerer progression. A multiclass dip can make sense only when it adds a concrete feature that supports your chosen role enough to justify what it delays.
Before taking another class, weigh these trade-offs:
- Subclass timing: Count how many levels the dip pushes back the Hound of Ill Omen and Shadow Walk.
- Spell access: Check what the split does to Sorcerer spell progression and access to higher-level spells.
- Action economy: Consider whether the added feature competes for your actions or bonus actions.
- Shared resources and concentration: Check whether the new option also demands Sorcery Points, concentration, or other attention already needed by your control plan.
There is no evidence here establishing a universally strongest multiclass combination. Choose a split only for a specific role and set of trade-offs, not because a class pairing is assumed to be optimal.
