How to Build a Winning Squad in Tactics Games

There is no universal best squad. Match your lineup to the mission, game rules, threats, and tradeoffs.

There is no single winning squad for every tactics game. Build for a specific job: read the mission and rules, identify the threats, select units that cover the necessary functions, then check what the lineup gives up. A squad that is ideal for one map or objective may be poorly suited to another.

How do you build a squad for a mission?

  1. Read the mission and the game’s rules. Check the objective, deployment limits, movement constraints, and whether units persist or can be lost. In XCOM 2, soldiers killed in combat are permanently removed from the squad, so a risky plan has a lasting roster cost. Other games handle casualties differently; use the rules of the game you are playing.
  2. Give the squad a primary job. Choose a purpose specific enough to guide unit and equipment choices: scout and initiate safely, hold a position against ranged attacks, break a defensive line, protect a vulnerable unit, or reach an objective quickly. A Symphony of War squad-building guide recommends assigning a main role while retaining flexibility for related tasks.
  3. List the threats and tasks that matter here. Consider enemy types, terrain, movement demands, and mission-specific interactions. Use counters only when the game’s mechanics support them; a formation advantage from one tactics game is not automatically valid in another.
  4. Choose units and positions to answer those needs. Think about what each unit does and where it can do it safely. In Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga, the guide discusses protecting fragile healers and mages from some threats while noting that area attacks can still endanger them.
  5. Check the gaps and substitutes. Ask what happens if a key unit is unavailable, a counter appears, or the squad must handle a secondary task. Where the game allows it, keep other squads or reserve units that cover different needs.
  6. Reassess as the game changes. Promotions, new abilities, equipment, or a different game mode can change which jobs a squad can perform. In XCOM 2, classes gain unique abilities and additional abilities as soldiers rise in rank, so a lineup’s strengths can shift over a campaign.

Which roles should a squad cover?

Start with the jobs the mission demands rather than a fixed class checklist. Depending on the game, useful functions may include damage, defense, healing, scouting, mobility, or interacting with objectives. Some squads need several of these; others can specialize because another unit or squad covers the omissions.

XCOM 2 shows why roles should be understood in their game context. Its manual describes Rangers as specialists in stealth or close-range combat, Specialists as using a Gremlin for healing, bonuses, or hacking, Grenadiers as focusing on explosives or heavy weapons, and Sharpshooters as specializing in long-range attacks or pistols. These are examples of differentiated roles, not a universal four-class recipe.

How do you compare two possible lineups?

Compare the options against the same mission and the same practical questions. These criteria are a decision aid, not a numerical scoring system or a claim that one composition has a measured win-rate advantage.

Factor Question to ask
Mission fit Does the lineup help complete the actual objective within its constraints?
Threat coverage Can it handle the enemies or hazards the game makes relevant?
Role overlap and gaps Are necessary jobs covered, or does a duplicated role crowd out another need?
Resilience Can it recover from damage, a lost unit, or a bad engagement under this game’s rules?
Mobility and positioning Can the units reach useful terrain and maintain a workable formation?
Flexibility Can the squad adapt to an unexpected encounter, or does another squad cover that possibility?
Opportunity cost What useful capability do you give up by choosing this unit, gear, or formation?

Why do positioning and action rules matter?

A lineup’s value depends partly on what units can do during a turn and how the game rewards positioning. In XCOM 2, the Feral Interactive manual says each soldier has two action points per turn, cover reduces the chance of being hit, and a flanked soldier is especially vulnerable. Those rules affect how you judge mobility, protection, and whether a unit can carry out its intended job safely.

Concealment can also shape the opening of an engagement in XCOM 2. The manual’s instruction is: “Use concealment to set up ambushes and engage the enemy on your terms.” Treat this as a game-specific tactic, not a general rule for every tactics game.

What do focused squads look like in Symphony of War?

Symphony of War: The Nephilim Saga offers examples of why a squad should be built around its intended job and movement type. The game-specific Core Squads guide describes focused ranged, cannon, anti-firearm, anti-mage, mixed-defense, ambush, cavalry, healing-support, and flying-dragon squads. The exact unit choices, formation effects, and counters belong to Symphony of War; they are not standard builds for other games.

The broader lesson is to balance specialization against coverage. A focused squad can be effective at its assigned task but vulnerable when the encounter asks for something else. A more mixed lineup may respond to more situations, though it can be less optimized for a narrow purpose. Consider both the squad’s own gaps and what the rest of your roster can supply.

What mistakes make a squad less effective?

  • Picking units before defining the job: a lineup can look powerful yet fail to meet the mission’s movement or objective demands.
  • Importing another game’s counters: class names and mechanics do not transfer automatically between titles.
  • Ignoring positioning: units suited to a role may still be exposed if placed where the game’s rules make them vulnerable.
  • Over-specializing without roster support: a focused squad can struggle outside its purpose if no other unit can cover its missing capabilities.
  • Keeping an old build after progression: new abilities or changed constraints can alter what the squad can reliably do.
