You can build a YouTube gaming VOD rerun channel by scheduling encoder-based live streams of gameplay you have the rights to use, saving a local backup, and organizing the resulting archives into clear playlists. The main constraints are not the broadcast mechanics: they are rights clearance, YouTube’s archive limit, and the fact that streaming a recording does not guarantee monetization.
Before you schedule a rerun, check the footage rights
Owning a recording does not necessarily mean you hold every right needed to rebroadcast it publicly or monetize it. Check the game publisher’s current rules for streaming and commercial use, and review the recording for licensed music, overlays, guest content, or other third-party material. YouTube’s Terms of Service make creators responsible for having the necessary rights, including music rights.
YouTube’s live copyright system scans streams for third-party content and may interrupt or terminate a stream. If a rights holder has licensed material to you, they may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. Keep permission and license records, but do not treat them as a guarantee against claims: an archived stream can receive a Content ID claim after the live event ends. - Confirm that the publisher permits streaming the game, and check whether its terms allow commercial use if you intend to monetize.
- Clear music and other third-party material in the VOD separately; permission to use the game does not automatically clear its soundtrack or guest contributions.
- Keep documentation of licenses and permissions, and be prepared for a rights claim even when you believe you have permission.
Schedule the live rerun in YouTube Studio
Create or reuse a scheduled stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live.
- Open the Manage tab and schedule a stream. Create a new stream or reuse settings from a previous one, then edit the title, description, visibility, and other details for this episode.
- In the stream’s encoder setup, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into your encoder. The key connects the encoder to your YouTube stream, so treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Start the encoder after entering the URL and key, following YouTube’s live encoder setup instructions. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed before relying on the scheduled start.
A scheduled stream can appear as upcoming, where viewers may select “Notify me.” For the exact available settings and current interface, use YouTube’s stream settings guidance.

Plan around the archive limit
YouTube says, “If your live stream is less than 12 hours, YouTube can automatically archive it for you.” Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Keep reruns below that threshold if you need the automatic archive, and make a separate local recording as a backup. YouTube recommends a local archive backup; its archive guidance explains the limit.
Turn the stream into a useful episode archive
After the broadcast, review the archived video’s visibility and metadata in YouTube Studio. YouTube uploads the archive by default; making it public can help people find it and may increase the reach of future streams. Group related episodes and highlight clips into playlists so viewers can follow a game, run, or event in order.

- Use an accurate title that identifies the game and episode or event, and makes clear that it is a rerun.
- Write a description that explains what viewers are watching and includes useful episode context.
- Keep playlist names and ordering consistent across a series.
Do not rely on tags as the main discovery tactic. YouTube says tags have minimal impact in most cases, except when they help with common misspellings. See its video tag guidance.
Understand the limits on monetization
Monetizing gameplay depends first on the commercial-use rights granted by the game’s publisher. YouTube also warns that “Videos simply showing a user playing a video game or the use of software for extended periods of time may not be accepted for monetization.” Its guidance describes qualifying commentary as step-by-step, tied to the action, and instructional or educational. Simply owning the footage or broadcasting it live does not establish monetization eligibility. Read YouTube’s video game and software content guidance.

There is also a channel-wide review. YouTube’s reused-content policy considers whether material has significant original commentary, substantive modification, or educational or entertainment value, and applies monetization review to the channel as a whole. In July 2025, YouTube renamed its repetitious-content policy “inauthentic content” to clarify its treatment of repetitive or mass-produced content; YouTube said that update did not change the reused-content policy. Copyright and reused-content monetization review are separate questions. Check the current YouTube channel monetization policies.
If your channel is eligible and monetization is enabled, YouTube documents ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships for some channels. Use Live Redirect only when it fits the schedule
Live Redirect can send viewers at the end of a stream to a Premiere or another live stream. To send viewers, the channel must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guidelines strikes. Sending viewers to another channel also requires that channel’s permission. Check current availability and setup in YouTube’s Live Redirect instructions.
