Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor one repeating video, use OBS’s Media Source and enable Loop. For several videos in one ordered playlist, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist; Advanced Scene Switcher is only needed if you want OBS to change between separate scenes or trigger other actions. These are local OBS playback controls, so you still need to configure and start your YouTube stream separately.
Choose the right way to loop videos in OBS
| What you want | OBS option | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one video | Media Source with Loop | Simple and does not require VLC, but it uses one file. |
| Loop several files in a playlist | VLC Video with Loop Playlist | Supports a file list and shuffle control; VLC must be installed. |
| Move among separately composed scenes or trigger conditional actions | Advanced Scene Switcher macros | More flexible, but requires additional setup and compatible plugin and OBS versions. |
OBS Project describes VLC Video as using VLC libraries for extended media support and says, “Unlike Media Source, you can create a playlist of items, similar to an Image Slideshow.” Read OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation (dated January 11, 2022); labels may differ in newer OBS releases.
Prepare your clips and scene
Decide what should repeat
- For a single clip, use Media Source and turn on Loop.
- For a series of clips that should play in a set order, use VLC Video and keep Shuffle Playlist off.
- For videos arranged across separate scenes, use Advanced Scene Switcher only if you need scene-level timing or conditional actions. If all you need is an ordered playlist, VLC Video is the more direct choice.
Check the files and composition
Gather the clips, decide their intended order, and identify the OBS scene that should contain them. OBS documents Media Source support for video formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM, and audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Check that each file plays as expected and that your scene’s framing and audio are suitable before configuring the stream.
OBS scenes are made up of sources. To add one, select the target scene and use the + control in the Sources dock. See the OBS Project Sources Guide (dated January 11, 2022).

Loop one video with Media Source
- In OBS, select the scene where the video should appear.
- In the Sources dock, select + and add a Media Source.
- Choose the local video file in the source properties.
- Enable Loop to repeat the file when playback completes.
- Decide whether to enable Restart playback when source becomes active. This is a separate setting: it starts the video again when the source becomes visible in the current scene.
- Confirm the clip’s position, size, and audio in the scene preview.
The documented Media Source formats include MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for video, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV for audio. For unusual files or behavior, consult the OBS documentation and check the source properties in your installed version.
Loop several videos with VLC Video
- Install VLC before configuring the source. OBS states that VLC Video depends on VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, you need 64-bit VLC.
- Select the target OBS scene. In the Sources dock, choose + and add VLC Video.
- Add the media files to the playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Enable Loop Playlist so playback repeats after the list finishes.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off to retain the listed order. Turn it on only if you want a shuffled sequence.
- Preview the playlist to confirm the selected files, order, picture, and audio.
OBS documents VLC Video’s loop and shuffle controls. The documented default is Loop Playlist on and Shuffle Playlist off; check the source settings in your own OBS installation rather than relying on a default that may have changed.

Use Advanced Scene Switcher to change scenes
Advanced Scene Switcher is a macro automation plugin, not the basic playlist source. A macro combines conditions and actions; for a timed cycle, the conceptual pattern is scene A and its condition followed by a switch to B, then B to C, then C back to A. Use it when each scene has its own composition or you need conditional actions. If you only need several clips to play in order, VLC Video avoids the extra scene-switching setup.
- Check the plugin’s current compatibility information before installing or updating it. The OBS Forums resource listing for Advanced Scene Switcher currently lists version 1.36.1, minimum OBS Studio version 31.1.1, Windows/macOS/Linux support, and an update date of August 7, 2026. These are the listing’s current details, not a guarantee that every installation is compatible. See the Advanced Scene Switcher resource listing and its maintained wiki.
- Open Tools → Advanced Scene Switcher in OBS and confirm the plugin is running.
- Create a macro for each transition. Set the condition that should trigger the transition, then add a switch-scene action for the destination scene.
- Build and review the full cycle—for example, A to B, B to C, and C back to A—so each macro’s condition and destination match your intended sequence.
- Preview the cycle locally. Confirm scene order, timing, video, and audio before starting a public stream.
The plugin’s exact controls can change between versions. For a visual example of the duration-condition and scene-switch pattern, see the third-party Advanced Scene Switcher walkthrough; use the maintained plugin resource and wiki for current instructions.

Configure YouTube Live separately
An OBS loop controls local playback in your scene; it does not start or configure the public YouTube stream. Set up YouTube Live and the encoder connection separately using YouTube Help’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder. Check that OBS is sending the intended scene and that YouTube receives the stream before relying on the broadcast.
Looping video does not establish permission to broadcast it or guarantee that it complies with YouTube’s policies. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules for your channel and content.

Check the loop before going live
- Confirm the correct scene and source are visible in the preview.
- For one clip, confirm Media Source’s Loop setting.
- For multiple clips, confirm the VLC Video playlist order, Loop Playlist, and shuffle choice.
- If using scene macros, confirm the plugin is running and each condition switches to the intended scene.
- Listen for expected audio and inspect the transition between clips or scenes.
- Start and check the YouTube encoder stream separately; a local OBS loop alone does not confirm that a public stream is active.
Troubleshooting
VLC Video is missing from the source menu
Check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS. OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC when using 64-bit OBS.
The playlist does not stay in order
Open the VLC Video source properties, review the file order, and turn off Shuffle Playlist if you want a fixed sequence.

A single video stops after playing once
Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop. Do not confuse it with Restart playback when source becomes active, which controls playback when the source becomes visible in the current scene.
A scene macro does not switch as expected
Confirm Advanced Scene Switcher is running, check the plugin and OBS compatibility listing, then review the macro’s condition and switch-scene action. Verify the destination scene name and test the sequence in OBS preview.
The OBS preview loops, but YouTube is not live
The source loop and YouTube encoder connection are separate. Check the encoder stream setup in YouTube Live and confirm that OBS is sending to the intended stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo offers a cloud alternative to keeping OBS running at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Nothing has to stay on at home, and it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month.
StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded video; it is not a camera broadcast. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free first day.
