To combine videos from a directory in a chosen order, write their filenames into an FFmpeg concat-demuxer playlist, then pass that text file to FFmpeg. Use -c copy only when the files have compatible streams; if their codecs, time bases, resolutions, or audio layouts differ, normalize them or use the concat filter and re-encode.
Choose and check the playback order
The order of entries in the playlist determines the order of the combined video. Do not rely on a directory listing or wildcard to produce the sequence you intend. Number clips with leading zeroes, for example 01_intro.mp4, 02_gameplay.mp4, and 03_end.mp4, then review the list before encoding.
Use an explicit text file named playlist.txt in the same directory as these example clips:
file '01_intro.mp4'
file '02_gameplay.mp4'
file '03_end.mp4'
For a playlist intended to be portable and self-describing, it can begin with the concat-script header:

ffconcat version 1.0
file '01_intro.mp4'
file '02_gameplay.mp4'
file '03_end.mp4'
Use one file directive per input, in the exact sequence you want. Filenames with spaces or special characters need careful quoting and escaping in an FFmpeg concat script; renaming clips to simple names is often the least error-prone approach.

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy combined.mp4
The concat demuxer reads the listed files sequentially and adjusts timestamps. -c copy copies the encoded streams instead of decoding and encoding them again, but it does not make incompatible inputs compatible. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation states: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Differences in stream count, codec, time base, resolution, frame rate, or audio layout can prevent clean concatenation.
-safe 0 permits paths that FFmpeg’s safe-path default may reject. Use it only with a playlist you control. With simple, safe relative filenames, try -safe 1, the default, instead. Avoid running a playlist containing untrusted paths.

When inputs differ: normalize or use the concat filter
If the files do not have matching streams, the concat demuxer with stream copy is not the right fix. Either preprocess the files so their relevant stream properties match, or use FFmpeg’s concat filter, which decodes and re-encodes the output. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the filter approach when re-encoding is needed.
A starting command for inputs whose properties are already aligned is:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt
-c:v libx264 -pix_fmt yuv420p -crf 18 -preset medium
-c:a aac -b:a 192k -movflags +faststart combined.mp4
This example encodes H.264 video and AAC audio in an MP4 container; -crf 18 is a quality-oriented example, not a promised bitrate or file size. It does not normalize different resolutions, frame rates, channel layouts, or time bases. Mixed inputs may need explicit per-stream filters or separate preprocessing before concatenation. For filtered output, do not use -c copy.
| Method | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Concat demuxer with -c copy |
Input streams are compatible and you want to avoid an additional encode. | Requires matching stream properties; inaccurate duration metadata can cause artifacts. |
| Concat filter with re-encoding | Inputs need to be made consistent, or an output encode is acceptable. | Requires decoding and encoding, which uses additional processing and can change quality and file size. |
| File-level concat protocol | Only when the formats support concatenation at the file level. | It is not a general substitute for the concat demuxer on arbitrary video files. |
Use YouTube-friendly output settings
For an upload that needs re-encoding, YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings list MP4, H.264 video, progressive scanning, and AAC-LC among the supported audio choices. The guidance recommends 48 kHz audio and matching the frame rate used during recording. It also recommends SDR BT.709.

YouTube’s reference bitrates for SDR video are recommendations, not mandatory minimums:
| Resolution | Standard frame rate | High frame rate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
YouTube gives common frame-rate examples of 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps, while accepting other rates. Its format guidance advises using native frame rates and aspect ratios. The player adapts to the uploaded aspect ratio, so do not stretch footage simply to force a 16:9 frame.
Inspect the combined file before uploading
Play the start and check each join, particularly where clips have a cut, music change, or dialogue transition. Confirm the audio stays in sync and that the combined file has the expected duration, dimensions, and frame rate. This check is especially useful after a stream-copy concat, where mismatched properties or duration metadata may show up as glitches.
Troubleshooting common problems
- FFmpeg rejects a filename as unsafe: use simple relative paths and the safe-path default where possible. If you need paths that the default rejects, use
-safe 0only with a playlist you created and trust. - Clips play in the wrong order: edit the
fileentries explicitly and inspect the playlist. Do not assume the operating system or shell lists files in the desired order. - Black frames, audio gaps, join glitches, or a failed concat: compare each file’s codecs, stream count and layout, time base, and duration metadata. The demuxer needs matching streams, and inaccurate duration information can introduce artifacts. Normalize the sources or use the concat-filter and re-encode route.
- The output is large or takes a long time: stream copy avoids an extra encode only when the inputs are compatible. Re-encoding requires additional computation and can alter file size and quality; the time and result depend on the inputs and settings.
- Higher-quality playback options are not available immediately on YouTube: YouTube says higher qualities can take longer to process, so check again later rather than assuming the upload’s final quality is missing.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream rather than create one combined upload file, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the files as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only, not from a camera. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
