If you want a physical copy for PS5, make sure your console has a disc drive. PS2 and PS3 game discs do not play on PS5.
Which edition should you buy?
PS4 standard edition: best for most players
Sony lists the PS4 game as released on February 6, 2018, and describes it as rebuilt from the ground up by Bluepoint Games and JAPAN Studio. The US PlayStation Store has a digital PS4 listing; check your own regional store for availability and price, which can vary over time. Sony’s US product page identifies the platform and notes PS5 playability.
Choose the standard edition if you want to play the game rather than collect its launch extras. For a physical copy, confirm the listing explicitly says PS4. For a digital copy, confirm that the product is available through the PlayStation Store account and region you use.
PS4 Special Edition: for collectors
Sony announced the physical US Special Edition for February 6, 2018. Its original contents were a steelbook case with outer sleeve, artist postcards, printed manual, physical world map, Colossi stickers, and digital extras: the Ancient Bow, Cloak of Fate, “Spotted Steed” Agro skin, two PS4 themes, and a PS4 Colossi avatar set. Sony’s announced US launch MSRP was $49.99; that is a historical launch price, not a current valuation for a used copy. Sony’s launch announcement lists the contents and original price.

When considering a used Special Edition, ask for photographs of the actual contents rather than assuming the box is complete. A used disc does not guarantee that digital extras or account entitlements can be transferred or redeemed.
PS2 and PS3 releases: check the console before buying
The game has earlier PS2 and PS3 releases, but those discs are not a substitute for the PS4 edition if you plan to play on PS5. Sony’s PS5 manual says PS1, PS2, and PS3 format software cannot be played from disc on PS5. For a PS3, compatibility depends on the specific model: Sony’s manual for model CECH-43xx warns of limited backward compatibility with PlayStation-format software. Check the exact console model and its manual before buying an older disc; the available Sony documentation does not establish a complete compatibility chart for every PS3 model.

Will the PS4 version work on PS5?
Sony identifies the PS4 game as playable on PS5, with two qualifications: a system update may be required, and some features available on PS4 may be absent. For a physical PS4 copy, Sony’s PS5 manual says compatible PS4 Blu-ray discs can be played when a disc drive is installed. A PS5 without a disc drive cannot use the disc version. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance and disc-play instructions explain the relevant conditions.
A PS4 digital copy is a separate purchase from a disc. Check the PlayStation Store signed in to your own account for current regional availability, price, or subscription-catalog status; those can change and are not established universally.

What changes between PS4 and PS4 Pro?
Sony’s 2017 announcement described two options for PS4 Pro. Cinematic mode emphasized image quality and targeted dynamic 4K at 30 fps on a compatible 4K HDR display; Performance mode targeted 60 fps. These are Sony’s announced targets, not a guarantee of measured performance on every console or display. They may help you choose a play mode, but they are not different game editions to buy.
How to check a used copy before paying
- Verify the format. Make sure the listing says PS4 if you intend to use it on PS4 or PS5. Do not assume a PS2 or PS3 disc will work on PS5.
- Match the copy to your console. For a PS5 physical copy, confirm the console has a disc drive. For an older PS3 release, identify your console’s exact model and check its compatibility information.
- Request clear photos. For a standard copy, ask to see the disc label and readable side, case, and any inserts included. For the Special Edition, compare photos with Sony’s original contents list and ask which physical pieces are missing.
- Check the transaction terms. Review the seller’s return policy and account for shipping in the total local cost. No single used price is established here, so compare current local listings rather than treating the launch MSRP as a benchmark.

Sony’s UK product page describes the adventure as involving 16 colossi. The UK listing provides that figure; availability and store details may differ by region.
