For a steady stream, multiply the encoder’s configured bitrate in Mbps by 0.45 to estimate decimal GB per hour, or by 324 to estimate decimal GB for 30 days of continuous streaming. At 6 Mbps, that is about 2.7 GB per hour and 1,944 GB (1.944 TB) in 30 days. This estimates traffic sent from your Linode to YouTube; it does not tell you whether your account’s pooled transfer allowance covers it or what an overage would cost.
Calculate the stream’s transfer volume
Here, “bandwidth” can mean two different things. Bitrate is the stream’s data rate; monthly transfer is the accumulated volume sent over time. For a steady bitrate, use these decimal-unit estimates:
| Streaming period | Formula | At 6 Mbps |
|---|---|---|
| One hour | Mbps × 0.45 = decimal GB | About 2.7 GB |
| 30 days, 24 hours a day | Mbps × 324 = decimal GB | About 1,944 GB (1.944 TB) |
The conversion behind the hourly estimate is bitrate × 1,000,000 bits per second × 3,600 seconds, divided by 8 bits per byte. Dividing by 1,000,000,000 gives decimal GB. The 30-day estimate assumes 720 streaming hours. Binary GiB and TiB displays will show different values.
Use your actual bitrate and schedule
Substitute the bitrate configured in your encoder, not a resolution label or a bitrate recommendation. For a schedule shorter than 30 days, calculate the hours actually streamed: decimal GB ≈ Mbps × 0.00045 × hours. For example, 6 Mbps for 10 hours is about 27 decimal GB.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These formulas assume a steady configured bitrate and exclude protocol and operational overhead. Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a traffic measurement or a prediction of your bill. If you send a separate backup feed from another encoder or instance, calculate its transfer independently and add it.
Choose the bitrate input carefully
YouTube’s recommended encoder settings vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its encoder settings guidance lists H.264 recommendations of 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are configuration recommendations, not measurements of what your stream actually sends. Use the bitrate you have set, and identify the codec before taking a value from YouTube’s table; its guidance also gives ranges for AV1 and H.265.

- For the documented RTMP/RTMPS setup, YouTube recommends CBR encoding, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and RTMPS.
- YouTube says to “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” That is headroom for available upload capacity, not a 20% multiplier for calculating monthly transfer.
- Test with representative audio and movement, then monitor stream health in Live Control Room. Insufficient connection capacity or mismatched settings can cause ingest or quality problems.
Keep the two calculations separate: transfer estimates how much data accumulates over time; connection headroom helps your encoder deliver the configured stream reliably. YouTube’s live encoder settings and streaming tips explain the relevant recommendations.
Check what Linode counts toward your allowance
A stream sent from a Linode instance to YouTube is outbound traffic from that instance. If the Linode only encodes and uploads the stream, audience playback is served by YouTube rather than being sent to viewers from the Linode. Linode staff describe plan transfer allowances as part of a monthly account pool: public outbound traffic counts, while inbound and private-network traffic do not. The staff explanation also describes transfer being prorated when services are created or deleted during a billing month. See the Linode staff explanation for those pool details.

The actual allowance and potential overage depend on the account’s current plans, billing period, usage from other services, and data-center region. A Linode community answer reproduces current-guide information indicating region-specific overage rates; it is not a dependable current quote for your account. Check the transfer pool in Cloud Manager and Linode’s current billing documentation for your region rather than relying on a historical plan example or rate. The community answer about overage pricing explains why region matters, but does not establish your account’s current charge.
Estimate whether the stream fits
- Calculate the stream’s volume using its configured bitrate and expected streaming hours in the billing period.
- Add the estimated outbound transfer from any independent backup feed.
- Add other metered public outbound use by services sharing the account pool.
- Compare the total with the current pool shown for your account, accounting for any applicable proration.
- If the estimate exceeds the allowance, check the current regional overage rate before forecasting cost.
This method estimates the stream’s contribution to account usage; it cannot establish an account-specific bill without current plan, region, pool, and usage details.
