If you are planning files that have not been encoded yet, multiply their combined video and audio bitrate by the total duration, then divide by eight. Count each file once: looping a playlist does not require another stored copy for each repeat.
Use actual file sizes when the videos already exist
Add the size of every unique file in the playlist. This is the most reliable estimate because it reflects the file’s actual encoding, including variable bitrate. If the same file appears more than once in a playlist, count its stored copy only once.
For example, if a library contains four distinct files, each 1.2 GB, the library requires 4.8 GB of storage. Replaying those files all day does not increase the space needed for the library.
Estimate storage for files you have not encoded
When you know the target bitrates and total duration, use this formula:

Estimated bytes = (video bitrate in bits/second + audio bitrate in bits/second) × duration in seconds ÷ 8
For a playlist of multiple files, use the total duration of the distinct content. If the video and audio rates are stated separately, add them before calculating. Convert the result to decimal GB by dividing bytes by 1,000,000,000, or to binary GiB by dividing by 1,073,741,824.
A quick decimal-GB shortcut
Approximate decimal GB ≈ combined Mbps × hours × 0.45

At a constant combined bitrate, 1 Mbps for one hour is about 0.45 decimal GB, or about 0.419 GiB. State which unit you mean: drive capacities are commonly labeled in decimal units, while operating systems may display decimal or binary units.

Example: estimate a 24-hour library
YouTube’s upload guidance recommends 8 Mbps video for 1080p SDR at 24, 25, or 30 fps and 384 kbps for stereo audio. Added together, those rates are 8.384 Mbps. At a constant rate, 24 hours of distinct content would be about 90.55 decimal GB.
This is an arithmetic estimate using YouTube’s upload recommendations, not a measurement or a guaranteed file size. YouTube supports variable bitrate and does not require a bitrate limit, so actual file sizes depend on the encode and the content.

These are estimates in decimal GB, calculated from the stated rate and a 24-hour duration. They are not a substitute for adding the sizes of files you already have.
Choose bitrate inputs that match the video
YouTube’s official upload-encoding guidance gives the following SDR video recommendations. They are planning inputs, not a universal bitrate requirement for every source file or a guarantee of the resulting file size.

HDR recommendations differ and are generally higher; for example, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 24/25/30 fps and 15 Mbps at 48/50/60 fps. Its audio recommendations are 128 kbps for mono, 384 kbps for stereo, and 512 kbps for 5.1. Add the audio bitrate to the video bitrate when estimating them as separate components.

For a useful comparison, keep resolution, frame rate, SDR or HDR, audio channel configuration, and bitrate type consistent. A variable-bitrate file’s actual size depends on its encoded content: a calm, static scene and a visually complex one can occupy different amounts of space even when they share nominal settings. YouTube says, “Content should be encoded and uploaded in the same frame rate it was recorded.”
A practical way to refine the estimate
- List the distinct files. If they already exist, record each file’s displayed size and add the values. Include each unique file once.
- For planned files, total their duration. Choose plausible video and audio bitrates for the resolution, frame rate, and audio configuration you intend to use.
- Calculate the estimate. Apply the formula to the total duration of unique content, or use the decimal-GB shortcut.
- Test a representative sample. Export a short sample using the intended settings, check its actual size, and use its average size per minute to refine the library estimate before encoding everything.
- Allow room for changes and copies. Account for future playlist additions and any working or backup copies you plan to keep. The required extra space depends on your own workflow; there is no fixed safety margin established here.
- Check the destination’s limit. Compare the total with available disk space or a hosted service’s stated storage allowance, and verify that service’s current limits and terms before purchasing.
If you keep source files locally, an external hard drive for video files can be one option. Choose its capacity after measuring your library and allowing for future files and any separate backup copy.

A separate recording of a continuous 24-hour stream is different: it creates another file, whose size depends on that recording’s bitrate and duration. Estimate it as a 24-hour file using the same formula, then add it to the space needed for the original library if you keep both.
