To calculate a video’s aspect ratio, divide its width in pixels by its height. For ratio notation, write width:height and reduce both numbers by their greatest common divisor. A 1920 × 1080 video is 16:9; a 1080 × 1920 video is 9:16.
Find the video’s width and height
Read the pixel dimensions from the video file’s metadata or from your editing or media app’s file information. Keep the order straight: video aspect ratios put width first and height second. Adobe’s Dynamic Media documentation defines aspect ratio as the ratio of a video’s width to its height.
Calculate the aspect ratio
Get the decimal
Divide width by height:
Aspect ratio as a decimal = width ÷ height
A result above 1 means the frame is wider than it is tall. A result below 1 means it is taller than it is wide.
Reduce it to width:height notation
Write the dimensions as width:height, then divide both numbers by their greatest common divisor. The reduced pair is the familiar ratio. For example, 1920:1080 becomes 16:9 when both values are divided by 120.

Adobe documents the 1440 × 1080 example as 4:3 and maps decimal ratios 1.78, 0.75 and 0.56 to 16:9, 3:4 and 9:16, respectively. These decimals are rounded; when possible, use the exact dimensions to reduce the ratio.
Aspect ratio is not resolution
Aspect ratio describes a frame’s shape; resolution gives its pixel dimensions. A 1280 × 720 video and a 1920 × 1080 video have different resolutions but both reduce to 16:9. A ratio alone does not tell you how many pixels the video contains or establish its image quality.

Choose a frame shape for the destination
Match the intended orientation and check the destination’s current upload guidance if you have a platform-specific requirement. YouTube says the standard aspect ratio for its computer player is 16:9; its guidance lists 1920 × 1080 as one resolution for that ratio and says the player adapts to video dimensions and the viewer’s device. That is guidance for YouTube’s player, not a universal rule for every platform or video. See YouTube’s video resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.
YouTube advises against baking padding or black bars into the file when the player can adapt to the video. For other destinations, check their current instructions rather than assuming they use the same display behavior.

Resize without distorting the picture
Changing a video’s frame shape does not automatically preserve its framing. To fit a different target shape, decide whether to crop, pad, or—usually as a last resort—stretch the image. Cropping removes parts of the picture; padding adds borders; stretching changes proportions and makes objects look distorted.
Calculate a missing dimension
To preserve a target ratio, calculate the other dimension instead of stretching. For a 16:9 frame:

- Height = width × 9 ÷ 16
- Width = height × 16 ÷ 9
For example, a 1280-pixel-wide 16:9 frame needs a height of 720 pixels. If the source does not match the target shape, choose a crop that keeps important content in frame, or add borders if that suits the destination.

For ordinary square-pixel video, dividing stored width by stored height gives the frame shape. Some files use non-square pixels, so the displayed shape can differ from the ratio suggested by the stored dimensions. FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes display aspect ratio (DAR), the ratio of the full displayed image, from sample aspect ratio (SAR), the ratio of individual pixels, and explains that video can store aspect information.

If an older or anamorphic video looks stretched even though its dimensions suggest a familiar ratio, check its display- and sample-aspect metadata before concluding the arithmetic is wrong. Scaling or cropping workflows may need to account for those values.
