Open Steam’s Downloads page and click Pause beside the active game or update. If the item is only queued, use the X or remove control beside it. To abandon a fresh installation completely, pause it first, then choose Library > right-click the game > Manage > Uninstall.
How to stop an active Steam download
- Open the Steam client.
- Open Downloads by clicking the Downloads link at the bottom of Steam, or choose View > Downloads. The Library also provides access to the Download Manager. See Valve’s download-management guide.
- Find the game, update, DLC, Workshop item or other content that is transferring.
- Click Pause beside that item.
Pausing stops network downloading and normally leaves the item available to resume later. Steam may continue using the disk briefly while it allocates space, unpacks data or applies files; that processing is different from network transfer.
Steam’s current desktop interface may show different icons for active, paused and queued items. There is not necessarily a button literally labelled Cancel for an active download.
How to remove a download from the queue
A queued item has not necessarily started transferring. In Downloads, locate the entry marked Queued or showing Resume. If an X or remove icon appears beside it, select that control and verify that the entry disappears from the queue. Steam Community guidance identifies this X as the queue-removal control; icon placement can change with client updates.

Removing an item from the queue is not the same as uninstalling a game that is already installed, and it does not remove ownership from your Steam account.
How to abandon a game installation completely
- Pause the installation in Downloads.
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game and choose Manage > Uninstall.
- Confirm the removal.
This removes the local installation, including an abandoned or partial fresh install, and can reclaim its allocated storage. The game remains associated with your Steam account and can be downloaded again from your Library.
This approach is for a new installation. It does not reliably roll back an update that has already changed the game’s files.

How to stop a Steam game update
Update actively downloading
Click Pause in Downloads. If Steam has already begun applying files, the game may be unavailable until the update resumes or finishes; pausing is not a guaranteed rollback.
Update waiting in the queue
Use the available X or remove control beside the queued entry. If no such control is shown, pause the item and restart Steam before trying again.
Prevent the update from returning automatically
- In Library, right-click the game and choose Properties.
- Open Updates.
- Set the update preference to Only update this game when I launch it, where that option is available.
This reduces background updates but does not promise an update-free launch. Starting the game can force Steam to download the required update. Valve documents per-game update controls in its download and update instructions.

Why Steam may keep working after you pause
- File processing: Steam may still be allocating, unpacking or moving files after network traffic stops.
- The item is still queued: Remove it with the X control if one is available.
- An automatic update is scheduled: Change the game’s Properties > Updates setting.
- The game was launched: Launching can require the pending update.
- The client state is stuck: Restart Steam and recheck Downloads.
Steam is stuck on “Stopping”
- Wait briefly if disk usage remains high, since Steam may be finishing file operations.
- Open Downloads again and check whether the status changes.
- Exit Steam normally, then reopen it.
- If the queue is still stuck, choose Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache.
- Sign in again when Steam requests it, then inspect the queue.
Valve says clearing the download cache does not remove installed games, but it does require signing in again. It is a troubleshooting step, not the normal way to pause an ordinary download. See Valve’s cache-clearing instructions.
Should you delete Steam’s temporary download files?
No—not as the first solution. Community reports indicate that deleting files in steamappsdownloading may not update Steam’s queue state, allowing the download to continue or return. It can also leave manifests and installation data inconsistent. Prefer pausing, queue removal, uninstalling through Steam, restarting the client and clearing the download cache.
Manual file cleanup is an advanced last resort only after Steam is fully closed and relevant saves or files have been backed up or verified. It is not a Valve-supported cancellation procedure.

Pause, remove, uninstall or change updates?

Device and storage considerations
Steam Deck and Big Picture Mode can use different labels or button placement from desktop Steam, but the relevant tool remains the Download Manager. Identify the correct entry before pausing Workshop, shader, DLC or game-content downloads.
Pausing does not necessarily reclaim space already allocated. If low disk space is the problem, uninstall the local game or partial installation through Steam rather than deleting folders while the client is running.

Does pausing lose my download progress?
Pausing normally leaves the item resumable, but an update that has already begun applying files may not return to exactly the previous playable state.

Does cancelling remove the game from my Steam account?
No. Queue removal and uninstalling affect local files or scheduling; they do not revoke ownership or remove the game from your Library.
Can I cancel an update without uninstalling?
You can pause an active update or remove a queued one. If files have already been applied, Steam may require the update to resume before the game works normally.
Will clearing the download cache delete installed games?
No. Valve states that installed games are unaffected, but Steam signs you out and requires another login afterward.
