How to Change a Video’s Aspect Ratio for YouTube and Shorts

Learn how to change a video’s aspect ratio for YouTube or Shorts, choose between cropping and preserving the full frame, and inspect the export.

Use 16:9 for a standard widescreen YouTube video and 9:16 for the familiar full-screen vertical Shorts look. In your editor, change the sequence or canvas to the target shape, then crop and reposition the footage—or fit the whole image and fill the spare space with a background. Cropping can cut off important action; fitting preserves the source but may make it appear smaller. Preview the entire export before uploading.

Choose the right aspect ratio

Aspect ratio describes the frame’s width relative to its height; resolution describes its pixel dimensions. A 16:9 frame is widescreen, while 9:16 is vertical. These are frame shapes, not measures of video quality. Pixel aspect ratio is a separate setting that affects how pixels are interpreted, so check it if footage looks incorrectly stretched before changing the frame shape.

  • Regular YouTube upload: 16:9 is the standard aspect ratio for YouTube on a computer. YouTube’s player can adapt to other video shapes and devices. Its Help guidance lists 1920 × 1080 pixels for 16:9 1080p video. YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance explains the player behavior.
  • Vertical Short: 9:16 is the usual phone-filling presentation. CapCut recommends 1080 × 1920 pixels for Shorts, but that is a software vendor’s recommendation, not a YouTube requirement.
  • Shorts classification: YouTube Help says that for standard channels, square or vertical uploads made on or after October 15, 2024, and up to three minutes long are categorized as Shorts. A square video can therefore qualify; 9:16 is a practical target, not the only eligible shape. Official Artist Channels have different date details, so check YouTube’s current Shorts guidance for channel-specific rules.

Changing a frame’s shape cannot create image area that was not in the source. A wide shot cannot fill a tall frame without cropping, enlarging the subject less, or changing how the unused canvas looks.

Pick a conversion method

Method What stays visible Trade-off Works well when
Crop and fill Only the part inside the new frame Fills the canvas, but cuts off source edges; moving subjects may leave the crop The subject stays near the center and a full-screen presentation matters most
Fit and preserve The full source image Leaves unused space or bars, and the image may look smaller All edge content must remain visible
Fit with a background The full source image Preserves the image but adds a background treatment around it You want to avoid cropping while making the canvas look intentional
Auto reframe A moving crop selected by the editor Can miss a subject or important edge detail and needs review You want an initial crop for footage where the subject moves

For a background fill, use a solid color, blur, or custom image if your editor supports it. YouTube advises against adding black bars or padding directly into a standard upload: its player adapts to the video’s shape and may add padding when showing vertical video in a computer browser. See YouTube Help. A designed background may still be useful when it is an intentional part of your edit, but it is not required to make YouTube accommodate the frame.

Change the frame and rework the footage

Adobe Premiere Pro: change a sequence or use Auto Reframe

  1. Choose the target: use 16:9 for a regular widescreen upload or 9:16 for a vertical Short. Adobe’s social-platform guide lists both formats for YouTube destinations.
  2. Change the sequence: Adobe documents that a sequence’s aspect ratio can be changed after creation, even though the project’s original frame and pixel aspect settings are established when it is created. If the source looks stretched, check that its pixel aspect ratio is being interpreted correctly before diagnosing the frame ratio.
  3. For an automatic moving crop: in the Project panel, right-click the sequence and choose Sequence > Auto Reframe Sequence. Select the target aspect ratio, then review the tracking and adjust it where needed. Adobe documents different tracking behavior for slower movement, such as a talking head, and faster movement, such as sports.
  4. Choose how to handle each shot: enlarge and reposition to crop and fill, or fit the whole image and use a background treatment. A project may need different treatment from shot to shot.

Adobe documents the sequence and Auto Reframe workflow in its aspect-ratio guidance and Auto Reframe overview. Menu labels can shift between software versions.

CapCut desktop: use Auto Reframe

  1. Import the video and select the clip.
  2. Open Basic > Auto reframe, then select 9:16 for a vertical Short.
  3. Review the reframed clip and correct any missed subjects or cropped details.
  4. Export with the desired resolution, frame rate, and codec. CapCut describes 1080 × 1920 pixels as an ideal Shorts size, not as a YouTube mandate.

See CapCut’s Shorts workflow for its documented steps. Its online video resizer also describes preset canvases, previews, background treatments, and output settings. Labels may vary across app versions.

Reframe manually when the automatic crop is wrong

  • Move the crop to keep the face, player, product, or other main subject in view throughout the shot.
  • Check hands, captions, logos, game HUD elements, and other details near the source frame’s edges; these are easy to lose when converting gameplay or commentary footage to vertical.
  • If a subject moves across the frame, adjust the crop over time using your editor’s position or keyframe controls. Do not rely on a crop that only looks right on the first frame.
  • If cropping removes something essential, fit the complete source inside the target frame and fill the leftover canvas with a background treatment. The whole image remains visible, though it may appear smaller.

Export and inspect the finished video

  1. Export at dimensions matching the target canvas and choose a resolution appropriate for that frame. Adobe lists 1920 × 1080 as its 16:9 1080p example; CapCut recommends 1080 × 1920 for Shorts.
  2. Do not stretch the image non-proportionally to make it fill the frame. Stretching distorts shapes; use crop, fit, repositioning, or a background instead.
  3. Watch the rendered file from start to finish, not just the editing preview. Check that the subject remains in frame during movement, text is readable, important edge details remain visible, and no unwanted bars or distortion have appeared.
  4. Preview it at a phone-sized scale if it is intended as a vertical Short, and in the intended player for a regular upload.
  5. Use a frame rate and codec that suit your source and editing workflow. The cited guidance does not establish one universally best frame rate or codec for every video and destination.

Common problems and fixes

  • The crop cuts off half the scene: the new frame is narrower relative to the source, so filling it requires trimming the sides. Reposition the crop, use a full-image fit with a background, or keep that shot in a wider format.
  • The subject drifts out of frame: an automatic crop may not track the action reliably. Review the full clip and adjust tracking or reposition the crop over time.
  • The subject is tiny in the vertical version: fitting preserves the entire wide image, which leaves unused canvas and reduces the image size. Crop more tightly if safe, or use a designed background around the full image.
  • The video looks stretched: undo non-proportional scaling. Check the source’s pixel aspect interpretation, then use a proportional crop or fit.
  • You see black bars on YouTube: make sure they were not baked into the export unintentionally. YouTube’s player adapts to different aspect ratios; inspect the uploaded video and the exported file separately.
  • Text or game interface elements are clipped: move the crop to include them, reposition or resize their overlay in the edit, or preserve the full frame with a background. Check every shot where the layout changes.
