For an upcoming scheduled encoder stream, open YouTube Studio, go to Create > Go Live > Manage, select the stream, choose Edit, then update its thumbnail in the stream details and save. YouTube documents editing scheduled-stream details, but its available guidance does not confirm that you can change the thumbnail in place during an active 24/7 broadcast.
Change the thumbnail for a scheduled live stream
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Select Create > Go Live.
- Open the Manage tab in Live Control Room.
- Select the scheduled stream you want to update and choose Edit.
- In the stream details, locate the thumbnail control, upload the image, and save your changes. YouTube documents editing stream details from the settings page or while scheduling, but does not spell out every thumbnail-specific click in one combined procedure. The settings guidance applies to encoder and mobile streams, not webcam streams. YouTube’s general thumbnail guidance also gives this route: Studio > Content > select the video > Thumbnail > Upload file > Save. For a scheduled broadcast, use the stream’s Edit controls in Live Control Room first. The general route and image requirements are described in Add custom thumbnails on YouTube.
Can you change the thumbnail while the stream is live?
YouTube’s cited guidance does not explicitly confirm whether a thumbnail can be changed in place during an active 24/7 broadcast, nor does it establish how such an edit would appear to viewers. If the broadcast is already live, do not assume the scheduled-stream procedure will work or that a changed image will appear immediately. The documented controls are clearest for a scheduled stream before it begins.
YouTube notes that thumbnail changes may take time to appear. Its encoder guidance describes the stream URL and stream key as the connection between the encoder and YouTube feed; the thumbnail workflow is in Studio, and the available documentation does not indicate that changing the thumbnail requires changing the key or encoder settings. That distinction follows from the separate documented workflows, not an explicit statement about active broadcasts.

Prepare an image YouTube will accept
- Verification: Your YouTube account must be verified to upload a custom thumbnail.
- Aspect ratio and format: Use a 16:9 JPG or PNG image.
- Resolution: YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels and specifies a minimum width of 640 pixels.
- File size: The current guidance lists a 50 MB limit on desktop and a 2 MB limit on mobile for video thumbnails.
These are YouTube’s recommendations and limits on its custom-thumbnail help page. Allow time for changes to propagate; YouTube says, “It may take time for your thumbnail changes to appear on YouTube.”
What the Made for Kids setting does—and does not—establish
The cited thumbnail guidance does not say that designating a channel or video as Made for Kids blocks thumbnail editing. Keep that separate from a restriction on a different feature: YouTube says a mobile live-stream Short highlight is unavailable for streams set as Made for Kids. That highlight feature also has its own requirements, including a qualifying vertical mobile-app stream with chat and a duration from 10 minutes to 12 hours. See Promote your live stream.
