Tap the Change Character control to switch to the nearest playable character. In Free Play, hold the control to open the Character Grid and choose any character you have unlocked. On the Feral Interactive manual’s default Player 1 keyboard layout for PC and Mac, that control is U; other platforms and customized layouts may use different buttons.
Switch to the nearest character
Press the Change Character control once to switch to the nearest playable character. On the default PC/Mac Player 1 keyboard layout shown in the Feral Interactive manual, press U. Treat U as a keyboard example, not a universal control: bindings can be customized, and gamepad layouts vary.

If the on-screen prompt does not match your setup, check Options → Control Setup. You can open Control Setup from the main menu or the in-game pause menu.
Choose a specific character in Free Play
In Free Play, hold the Change Character control to open the Character Grid, then select any character you have unlocked. On the manual’s default PC/Mac keyboard layout, hold U.

Different characters have different abilities, so switching may also let you access an action or area that your current character cannot handle.
Why the full roster may not be available
Story mode
On a first run through a level, Story mode limits you to that level’s assigned cast. After completing the level in Story mode, replay it in Free Play to choose from the characters you have unlocked.

Unlocking characters
Characters become available as you progress, and some unlock when you collect Character Tokens. The Character Grid only offers characters unlocked so far.
Character-pack characters
According to WB Games support, owned and released character-pack characters become accessible from the Character Grid after you reach the Hall of Doom hub. To use them in levels you have already completed, open the map and use the Change Tab controls to go to Level Select.

About the default controls
The Feral Interactive manual’s default Player 1 keyboard bindings list U for Tag/character change; Space and Control (Ctrl) are also shown for character toggle up and down. Its standard gamepad diagram places character toggle on shoulder controls, but that diagram is not a guarantee for every controller or platform. Use your Control Setup screen or the on-screen prompt to confirm the binding for your setup.

Switching characters selects another playable character; it does not edit your custom villain’s appearance. The manual says the Character Creator appears after the opening cutscene when starting a new game, where you can create a character, choose a preset, or randomize an appearance. DC also describes the player’s Super-Villain as customizable. The consulted instructions do not specify every later appearance-editing menu step.
