Remap buttons on a connected controller
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Accessibility, then Button Mapping.
- Choose the controller you want to change and select Edit Controller Mapping. Only currently connected controllers appear in the list.
- Select the button you want to change, then choose the button input it should use instead.
- Select Save to apply the mapping.
Nintendo lists Button Mapping under Accessibility, separately from the A/B swap setting in Controllers & Accessories. See Nintendo’s System Settings overview and Switch 2 button-mapping guide.
Swap A and B without remapping other buttons
If you only want to exchange the A and B button functions, open HOME > System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Swap A and B Button mapping. This dedicated option is distinct from the full remapping controls under Accessibility.
What can and cannot be remapped
Nintendo allows remapping of buttons except POWER, Volume, HOME, and SYNC. Those excluded functions cannot be assigned to another button either. Stick directions cannot be converted into button inputs, but left- and right-stick inputs can be swapped between sides. Changing which stick side is used on Joy-Con 2 or Joy-Con works only when the controllers are in a dual-controller grip.

Button mapping is supported for Joy-Con 2, Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller, Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, Nintendo Switch Joy-Con, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Nintendo’s support FAQ also says Nintendo Switch Lite buttons can be remapped. The Switch 2 guide and Nintendo Button Mapping FAQ provide the compatibility and mapping details.
Save or load a mapping preset
You can save up to five button-mapping presets on each controller, then load a saved preset from the Button Mapping menu. Each controller must be configured separately, although a saved configuration can be loaded onto another controller of the same type. Custom configurations are saved on the console, not the controller, so they do not travel with the controller to a different system.

Use Quick Settings and map GL/GR buttons
Open Button Mapping from Quick Settings
Press and hold HOME for at least one second to open Quick Settings. First enable Button Mapping in System Settings; after that, Quick Settings can take you to the mapping menu or let you switch saved presets.
Assign GL/GR while playing
When compatible software is running, you can assign the GL/GR buttons on a Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller or Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip to other buttons through Quick Settings. These assignments are available only from Quick Settings while playing a game. They are saved per game and per user, and are shared across compatible controllers.

Reset a mapping or recover from an unexpected change
To restore a controller’s standard mapping, open System Settings > Accessibility > Button Mapping, select that controller, and choose Reset Controller Mapping. Resetting does not delete registered presets.

A wrench icon beside the controller in use means at least one button has been remapped or disabled. After waking the console from sleep, you may also see the message “The Connected Controller’s Button Mapping Changed.” You can choose to reset to factory settings or keep using the custom mapping. If a controller seems not to respond properly, Nintendo recommends restoring standard inputs before troubleshooting further; see its Button Mapping FAQ.

- Mappings apply in nearly all console situations, including games, the eShop, and the HOME Menu, but Nintendo says they are disabled in certain tests and calibration procedures.
- Saved mappings belong to the console and must be set up separately for each controller. A preset can be loaded onto another controller only if it is the same type.
- You do not need to buy another controller to change button settings. If you already use another supported controller, connect it and select it in Button Mapping.
