To make an external controller Player 1 in EmuDeck, connect it in SteamOS Game Mode, open Quick Access → Quick Settings (the gear icon) → Rearrange controller order, then move it ahead of the Steam Deck. This changes SteamOS’s controller order; some emulators also need their own multiplayer ports or input devices configured.
Change controller order in SteamOS Game Mode
- Connect the external controller while the Steam Deck is in Game Mode.
- Open Quick Access using the controller’s button combination:
- Nintendo Switch controllers: HOME + A
- PlayStation controllers: PlayStation button + X
- Xbox controllers: Guide button + A
- Steam Controllers: Steam button + A
EmuDeck says that for an unlisted controller, hold Guide for three seconds and look for the Quick Access Menu combination. See EmuDeck’s SteamOS controls and hotkeys guide.
- Open Quick Settings using the gear icon.
- Scroll to the bottom and select Rearrange controller order.
- Select the order you want. To make one external controller first, put it ahead of the Steam Deck.
Understand what controller order changes
The SteamOS order control helps when the wrong physical controller is acting as the first player or controllers are assigned to the wrong users. EmuDeck notes that reordering may also help external controllers be recognized in emulation and, in some cases, Steam games.
It does not universally assign emulator ports. SteamOS decides the controller order; an emulator may separately require you to enable player ports or select input devices. If the controller order is right but a player or port is missing, check that emulator’s multiplayer setup.
Check emulator-specific multiplayer settings
Dolphin
EmuDeck’s Dolphin guide says the Steam Deck profile is automatically Port 1 and that extra ports must be enabled for multiplayer. If the controller-to-port match is wrong in Game Mode, try rearranging the SteamOS controller order.
