You can change Discord’s appearance using its built-in settings—no unofficial client, theme injector, or custom CSS app required. On desktop, go to User Settings > Appearance. On mobile, open your avatar menu, then Settings > Appearance. The available themes differ by platform, and some custom-color controls are limited to Nitro subscribers.
Change your Discord theme on desktop

Open User Settings by selecting the gear icon.

Select Appearance.

Choose an available built-in theme: Light, Ash, Dark, Onyx, or Sync with computer.
Discord also documents custom color themes for Nitro subscribers. If the controls appear in your Appearance settings, you can select a light or dark palette, pick colors or enter hex values, create gradients with up to five colors, adjust gradient direction and intensity, then select Apply. The options you see can depend on your client and eligibility; check your own settings rather than assuming every account has the same controls. See Discord’s appearance settings guide.

Choose Light, Dark, Midnight, or Automatic. Automatic follows your device’s appearance setting.
Discord’s Sync across clients option can carry a desktop-selected theme to desktop, mobile, and browser. The result may not look identical on each: Discord’s guide gives the example of desktop Ash appearing as Dark on mobile. Some controls may also be presented differently on mobile.

Adjust readability without a theme app
If you want a more comfortable screen rather than a different color palette, use the built-in controls in Appearance. Discord lists options for UI density (Compact, Default, or Spacious), message display spacing, zoom, chat font scaling, and message group spacing. These settings can change how much fits on screen and how easy text is to read without modifying the Discord client.

Discord’s Terms of Service prohibit “using any unauthorized software designed to modify the services.” They also state that users may not “copy, modify, create derivative works based upon, distribute, sell, lease, or sublicense any of our software or services.” The terms are effective September 29, 2025, and were last updated August 29, 2025. Because unofficial client modifications and theme injectors modify Discord outside its documented Appearance controls, the safer choice is to avoid them and use the native settings instead.
